GOP: How’s that Science Denial Working for You?
    <http://climatecrocks.com/2016/08/09/gop-hows-that-science-denial-working-for-you/>

by greenman3610 <http://climatecrocks.com/author/greenman3610/>
Yesterday a very vulnerable GOP Senate Candidate, Kelly Ayotte of New
Hampshire, publicly broke with her party in announcing she could not
support Presidential nominee Donald Trump, in part because of his stand
on climate change. As this NYTimes piece from a few days ago shows,
Ayotte was trying to keep up a front, but...

    My Education in*Climate*-Denial Jujitsu

The Republican-dominated Committee has long been hostile to expert
opinion—particularly on mainstream*climate science*—to the frustration
of the minority Democrats....Five days after my House Science Committee
visit, Rep. Smith sent out significantly less subtle congressional
subpoenas to a number of nonprofit advocacy groups and attorneys general
to suppress their investigations of ExxonMobil. In one letter to 17
attorneys general Smith and 16 Republicans on the House Science
Committee..."The Committee intends to continue its vigorous oversight of
the coordinated attempt to deprive companies, nonprofit organizations,
and scientists of their First Amendment rights and ability to fund and
conduct scientific research free from intimidation and threats of
persecution."...Instead of holding ExxonMobil accountable, Smith
conjured up a witch-hunt invoking science-positive rhetoric in an overt
overreach of power. In so doing, he and his like-minded colleagues have
intimidated and persecuted the very nonprofit organizations and
scientists whose First Amendment rights he purports to protect....Those
ten minutes in the Science Committee chambers primed me to understand
that underestimating the anti-science elite is a rookie mistake. Big
money factors calculating minds into the calculus of whom to
support...So don’t think for a minute they aren’t listening to the
experts. They are listening so they can retool our words and wield them
against us.

Nobody can buy the silence of a*climate*spinning out of control

The Guardian -‎16 hours ago‎

As a new (and still unproven) source of fossil fuels, fracking is
completely incompatible with tackling*climate change*. The government's
own*climate*advisers recently published a report suggesting that three
tests needed to be met for fracking to*proceed safely. None of these
tests are anywhere near being achieved....the only way out of the
climate crisis is through a radical transition to a zero-carbon economy
based on renewable energy. The public know this – that’s why support for
renewables remains high at 81%, with only 4% opposing. Despite this, the
UK currently does not have the policies to meet half of its 2030 carbon
reduction targets. This needn’t be the case. Since 2009 the costs of
solar photovoltaic modules have fallen by 75%, while recent estimates
suggest that prices could fall by a further 60% by 2025 if the industry
receives the right investment.the only thing that makes sense –
economically, environmentally and socially: invest in the shared wealth
that can be generated by renewable energy and energy efficiency. In
other words, invest in the future...*

State of the Climate in 2015

(The American Meteorological Society advances the atmospheric and
related sciences, technologies, applications, and services for the
benefit of society....Founded in 1919, the AMS is the nation’s premier
scientific and professional organization promoting and disseminating
information about the atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic sciences. With
more than 13,000 members of scientists, researchers, educators,
broadcast meteorologists, students, weather enthusiasts, and other
professionals in the fields of weather, water, and climate....) *An
international, peer-reviewed publication released each summer, the State
of the Climate is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate
published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological
Society.* The report, compiled by NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate
at the National Centers for Environmental Information is based on
contributions from scientists from around the world. It provides a
detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events,
and other data collected by environmental monitoring stations and
instruments located on land, water, ice, and in space....This is the
26th edition of the annual assessment now known as State of the
Climate.*The year 2015 saw the toppling of several symbolic mileposts:
notably, it was 1.0°C warmer than preindustrial times, and the Mauna Loa
observatory recorded its first annual mean carbon dioxide concentration
greater than 400 ppm. Beyond these more recognizable markers, trends
seen in recent decades continued.*

NY21:*Climate*is changing. Will that shape how we vote?

So, will*climate change*be on voters' minds in the NY21 congressional
race in November? Representative Elise Stefanik, a Republican, has moved
cautiously on this issue, so cautiously that her opponents say it may
have left her vulnerable.

Warming*climate*linked to increase in food poisoning from oysters

Until now, researchers had indirectly linked*climate change*to an
increase in illnesses from the bacteria, Colwell said. Using DNA, a
50-year database of plankton, water temperatures and disease reports,
she shows a more comprehensive connection.

Paris Agreement on*climate change*could go into effect this year

Other dynamics are at work too, including a continued push
by*climate*vulnerable nations' to find a way to meet the agreement's
aspirational*global warming*temperature goal of limiting warming to as
low as 1.5 degrees Celsius, or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit*...*

Firefighters are making gradual progress against the blaze
as*wildfire*season in the western United States reaches its traditional

California.
