*Climate Change*Could Be Devastating For Homeowners In Coastal
    Cities

If sea levels rise drastically, more than a million homes would be
literally underwater by the end of the century...
n a recent study, researchers argue that earlier predictions don't
sufficiently account for Antarctica's melting ice and that a more
accurate estimate is over 6 feet of*sea level rise*if*greenhouse
gas*emissions don't go down...Almost 1.9 million houses nationwide could
be underwater by 2100 if scientists’ more dire predictions come to pass,
according to a report from real estate company Zillow released last
week. Almost 300 cities would lose at least half their homes, the report
states...Zillow [below] looked at which existing houses would be
affected if sea levels rise 6 feet.... using maps from the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration...According to the EPA,
*estimates for sea level rise by the end of the century range between 1
and 4 feet, with an uncertainty range of 0.66 to 6.6 feet. In a recent
study, researchers argue that earlier predictions don’t sufficiently
account for Antarctica’s melting ice and that a more accurate estimate
is over 6 feet of sea level rise if greenhouse gas emissions don’t go
down.*
*
**Zillow.com report: Climate Change and Housing: Will a Rising Tide Sink
all Homes?
--If sea levels rise as much as climate scientists predict by the year
2100, *almost 300 U.S. cities would lose at least half their homes, and
36 U.S. cities would be completely lost.*
--One in eight Florida homes would be underwater, accounting for *nearly
half of the lost housing value nationwide*.
--The median value of a home at risk of being underwater is $296,296.
The value of the average U.S. home is $187,000.
Typically when we talk about "underwater" homes, we are generally
referring to negative equity. But*there is, of course, a more literal
way a home can be underwater: Rising sea levels, and the flooding likely
to come with them, could inundate millions of U.S. homes worth hundreds
of billions of dollars**.

*Climate*scientists make a bold prediction about*sea level rise*

Three top*climate*scientists just made a very bold prediction
regarding*sea level rise*; we should know in a few years if they are
correct...barring another major volcanic eruption, a detectable
acceleration is likely to emerge from the noise of internal climate
variability in the coming decade...*.the acceleration of sea level rise
is real and ongoing*. It is also an example of how climate models can
play a key role in both the interpretation of observations and the
prediction of near-future climate.

An epic Middle East heat wave could be*global warming's*hellish

In coming decades, U.N. officials and*climate*scientists predict that
the region's mushrooming populations will face extreme water scarcity,
temperatures almost too hot for human survival and other consequences
of*global warming*. If that happens, conflicts and refugee crises far
greater than those now underway are probable, said Adel Abdellatif, a
senior adviser at the U.N. Development Program’s Regional Bureau for
Arab States who has worked on studies about the effect of climate change
on the region. *..*.Temperatures in Kuwait and Iraq startled observers*.
On July 22, the mercury climbed to 129 degrees in the southern Iraqi
city of Basra. A day earlier, it reached 129.2 in Mitribah, Kuwait. If
confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization, the two temperatures
would be the hottest ever recorded in the Eastern Hemisphere....*"*A
*lot of these people are probably dying*, but it’s hard to know,*"* said
an official at an aid organization who was not authorized to discuss the
issue publicly and so spoke on the condition of anonymity...In*Baghdad,
the capital, the temperature measured at the international airport has
reached 109 degrees or higher nearly every day since June 19. *The city
has been 10 and even 20 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.*

Warren and Whitehouse: Exxon*Climate*Scandal a 'Master Class' in
    Corporate Rigging

... Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) have a thing or two to say to about
efforts by Exxon, and their Republican henchmen, to shut down state
probes into whether the oil giant deliberately misled the public about
the connection between fossil fuels and*climate**change..*.it is: a
master class in how big corporations rig the system*,*"* the pair wrote
in a searing op-ed published in the Washington Post late
Tuesday....Citing the hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign
contributions received by both Smith and Senate Environment and Public
Works Committee chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.)—who called the state AGs’
investigation as a *"*misuse of power*"* and *"*politics at its
worst*"*—they continue:***The greater abuse comes when congressional
committees appear to operate at the behest of the industries they are
meant to oversee*.*..*Congressional investigations and hearings have a
unique ability to focus a nation’s attention and bring facts of public
importance to light. As committee chairmen, Smith and Inhofe can direct
their committees’ authority as they see fit, but using that power to
stifle lawful state investigations doesn’t advance the First Amendment,
it tramples on it..*.*So we have an alternative suggestion.*If Chairmen
Smith and Inhofe are concerned about the First Amendment rights of
ExxonMobil, they should each call a hearing, ask ExxonMobil executives
to testify, and give them the opportunity to set the record straight*. A
committee chairman could do little more to protect any person’s right to
speak freely than to give that person the chance to testify before
Congress.*

With droughts and downpours,*climate change*feeds Chesapeake Bay
    algal blooms
    <http://phys.org/news/2016-08-droughts-downpours-climate-chesapeake-bay.html>

Phys.Org -‎1 hour ago‎

Nitrogen-rich agricultural runoff into the*Chesapeake Bay presents an
ongoing environmental and economic concern for the bay's massive
watershed*...patterns tied to climate change may nonetheless increase
the severity of algal blooms by changing how soil nutrients leach into
the watershed...."If you tell the farmer to put in less nitrogen, maybe
your crop yield goes down, but then the oyster yield goes up in the
bay."...Such an environmental strategy would require understanding other
sources of nitrogen -- such as automobile pollution and sewage -- and
other nutrients, such as phosphorus, that contribute to algal blooms.
Lee's model already accounts for all sources of nitrogen, and was
developed in a manner that allows it to be expanded to a global-scale
model that includes other chemicals and land-use patterns....The
article, "*Climate variability and extremes, interacting with nitrogen
storage, amplify eutrophication risk*," was published July 16, 2016, in
Geophysical Research Letters.

If the US took its*climate*goals seriously, coal beneath federal
    land would stay there

by Dave Roberts Coal from public land represents about 40 percent of US
coal supply, but critics have long charged that it’s being leased to
private developers for too cheap, at a rate that does not account for
its current market price or its impact on climate change. The
"programmatic review" is intended, in part, to make sure taxpayers get
their money’s worth...In a climate-constrained world, there’s not much
room for coal...Management decisions of*all fossil fuels owned by the
American public should be subject to a climate test: Are they consistent
with our carbon reduction goals and our international climate
commitments? If not, the fossils should be left in the ground.*

*What does one generation "owe" to a succeeding generation? * What is
the concept of "climate debt?" What do humans owe to non human species
whose lives and survival are threatened by the changing climate that the
release of atmospheric carbon is accelerating?...Class sessions
(approximately 3 hours of streaming video a week) will be delivered over
the 15 Week fall semester, starting on 31 August and ending 14 December.
The course is offered either for undergraduate credit or graduate school
credit or it may be audited as well. ...If you or your school or your
