*California Wildfire Devastates Area Still Rebuilding From Last Year's
Blazes
<http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/08/clayton-fire-california-habitat-for-humanity-wildfire-season-drought>*
Lake County's Clayton Fire is only five percent contained....The blaze
comes just as the county had started to rebuild from last year's
calamitous fire season. ...Lake County, California is ablaze again. A
wildfire erupted there on Saturday night, and has already burned 4,000
acres and is only 5 percent contained. The cause of the fire remains
unknown....Three major fires—the Valley Fire, the Rocky Fire, and the
Jerusalum Fire—*took out thousands of buildings and over 170,000 acres
in 2015*. The Valley Fire, the largest of the three, destroyed nearly
2,000 buildings itself, and killed four people.
Jill Stein just went way overboard on*sea level rise*
<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/08/17/jill-stein-just-went-overboard-on-sea-level-rise/>
Washington Post -3 hours ago
The contention is that Stein, who has been criticized previously for
statements on scientific topics like vaccines and genetically modified
organisms, is presenting*climate science*in an unduly alarmist way. The
problem traces to this tweet by*...12.3M Americans could lose their
homes due to a sea level rise of 9ft by 2050. 100% renewable energy by
2030 isn't a choice, it's a must. *
Coal Industry Borrows From Tobacco Playbook, Activists Say
<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/17/science/coal-industry-feeling-cornered-peeks-at-big-tobacco-playbook.html>
"Survival Is Victory: Lessons From the Tobacco Wars."..*.the coal
industry was,.. deliberately drawing a comparison between itself and the
tobacco companies*.... After reviewing the presentation, shared with him
by a reporter, the state attorney general leading the investigation of
Exxon Mobil, Eric T. Schneiderman of New York, called it important.
“This is just the latest example of the fossil fuel industry explicitly
adopting the Big Tobacco playbook,” ... reached a settlement last year
with Peabody Energy, the giant coal company, after *finding that it had
not properly disclosed to the public and its shareholders the risks of
climate change and regulation to its business* — an investigation
similar to Mr. Schneiderman’s efforts to determine whether Exxon Mobil
had committed fraud in its public statements about climate change...Like
so many elements of climate change, coal is a polarizing issue for
political parties... the coal industry presentation "is a reminder that
this is a much more complicated story than just Exxon Mobil."...Money
the coal industry spent on attacking climate science might have been
invested to develop effective carbon capture technology.
