*Can progress on climate change keep up with its quickening pace?

Tom Steyer Washington Post (opinion)

I've learned that the best decisions require looking at all of the
available data and trends... that*a decision not to act is a
decision*, and that no competent leader risks the health of the
entire enterprise by failing to take necessary steps....If the new
analyses imply an unpredictable and riskier world, that will
necessitate a more urgent, and more difficult, response...*it now
appears possible that the climate will warm by 2 degrees Celsius*
over pre-industrial levels — an amount of warming that scientists
consider the danger zone — not by 2050, as once predicted, *but
years earlier.* ... any new fossil-fuel investment must be avoided,
because it exacerbates emissions and delays solutions. Yet the
disruption to our economy could be minimized, and the whole process
should increase growth and reduce costs....*We cannot allow our
political divisions to be our undoing.*

Four Infographics That Show How*Climate Change*Is Affecting Your
    Health

To clarify that link, Climate Nexus and the American Public Health
Association developed a series of infographics that illustrate the
    connection between*climate change*and all manner of life-threatening
illness. *..1. Rising Temperatures 2. Extreme Weather 3. Air

*Most Americans Won’t Act On Climate. The News Probably Isn’t Helping
<https://thinkprogress.org/a-better-way-to-report-on-climate-change-60e9b79eee95#.bqj17s6yc>*

....lawmakers will only pass strong policies when Americans demand
it, and Americans will only demand it if they believe they can
affect the political process. At the root of all this grumbling is
the question of empowerment. How do you empower citizens to pick up
their phones and call their elected officials?...
People felt more empowered when they read that Americans generally
understand climate change and the political process and feel
confident in taking action...People felt less empowered when the
story suggested government does not respond to public
opinion...Feeling empowered made people more likely to "become
politically engaged on the issue of global climate change...it’s
important for journalists to*balance and temper their discussion of
climate impacts with information about what to do about it*."

July was the hottest month in recorded history, by a lot, and August
isn't looking any better. So how do we interpret that? What does it
    mean?

'Migrations in Motion': Visualization shows where*climate
    change*will push species

    Migrations in Motion A visualization
    <http://maps.tnc.org/migrations-in-motion/#4/19.00/-78.00>shows the
likely routes that would be taken by mammals (pink), birds (blue)
and amphibians (yellow) as they move northward in response
to*climate change*.*...likely impact of rising temperatures on
migration patterns for nearly 3,000 species....The study suggested
that species in North America would tend to shift toward more
northerly habitats, following routes that went through higher
elevations and less developed terrain. In the eastern United States,
the Appalachian Mountains stuck out as a superhighway for species
shifts....The patterns in South America are more complex. In the
northern part of the continent, species are expected to move
westward, away from the Amazon basin. At higher latitudes,
researchers expect species to move southward.*

Al Gore To Climate Change Activists: Don't Vote For A Third-Party
    ...

Al Gore has long been one of the highest profile climate change
activists in the United States. Now he has a message for other
activists to consider before...interview he addressed American
voters who may be considering giving their precious vote to a
third-party presidential candidate in the November general election.
According to Al Gore, while every American has the right to vote for
the presidential candidate of their choice, it’s highly unlikely any
third-party candidate is getting into the White House...Which
means,*a vote for a third-party candidate can also be considered a
vote that doesn’t get counted for the winning (or losing)
presidential candidate.* In a close election cycle, well-intended
voters who vote third-party can conceivably shoot themselves in the
foot by helping the candidate who least reflects their political
ideology win the election...When casting their votes, climate change
activists really should consider the climate change opinions of the
two mainstream political parties’ presidential candidates. For
example, as Politifact reports, Donald Trump doesn’t believe in
climate change at all. In fact, Donald Trump disbelieves in climate
change so strongly that he famously referred to it as a “hoax,” and
was called out by rival Hillary Clinton for doing so.
