(And we wanted to pre-empt the inevitable chatter about*climate
change*that usually crops up when the thermometer drops - “It's
bone-shakingly cold, how could the Earth be warming?...
When a dip in the polar vortex comes to our part of the world, it’s
usually the result of a change in pressure, which disturbs the
swirl, and can push the frosty Arctic air south, according to Faye
Barthold, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. And the
Arctic jet stream (or polar vortex) can sometimes dip far enough
south that it allows the cold air to travel down to places that do
not normally have Arctic conditions, like wherever you live...
When there is this dip in the jet stream that brings cold to the
East, there’s usually a countervailing loop that takes warm air into
Alaska or the Arctic. In the last few years, a frozen East has often
    coincided with a warm Alaska...
But this phenomenon is not exclusive to North America — the polar
vortex can freeze Europe and Asia, too.

While Exxon and Imperial are not alone in developing the tar sands,

Exxon's own scientists had confirmed fossil fuels' contribution to

In the face of the DOE questionnaire, multiple climate denier
cabinet nominees, and hints that Trump plans to cut NASA earth
sciences programs, scientists with access to decades of government
data on climate are taking steps to protect it. The Washington Post
reported Tuesday that the scientific community is working furiously
to archive federal data on independent servers to preserve it from
possibly being tampered with by a science-hostile Trump
administration. Meanwhile, dozens of prominent scientists and
activists rallied outside of the American Geophysical Union
conference in San Francisco Tuesday, vowing to "stand up for
science" over the next four years. In her keynote address at AGU
today, DOI Secretary Sally Jewell will tell scientists “if you see
science being ignored or compromised, speak up,” Reuters reports

Arctic Report Card - Tracking recent environmental changes relative to
historical records <http://arctic.noaa.gov/Report-Card>

Persistent warming trend and loss of sea ice are triggering
    extensive Arctic changes.
    - The average surface air temperature for the year ending September
2016 is by far the highest since 1900, and new monthly record highs
were recorded for January, February, October and November 2016.
    - After only modest changes from 2013-2015, minimum sea ice extent
at the end of summer 2016 tied with 2007 for the second lowest in
the satellite record, which started in 1979.
    - Spring snow cover extent in the North American Arctic was the
lowest in the satellite record, which started in 1967.
    - In 37 years of Greenland ice sheet observations, only one year had
earlier onset of spring melting than 2016.
    - The Arctic Ocean is especially prone to ocean acidification, due
to water temperatures that are colder than those further south. The
short Arctic food chain leaves Arctic marine ecosystems vulnerable
    to ocean acidification events.
    - Thawing permafrost releases carbon into the atmosphere, whereas
greening tundra absorbs atmospheric carbon. Overall, tundra is
presently releasing net carbon into the atmosphere.

*This Day in Climate History December 15, 2010

from D.R. Tucker *

December 15, 2010: Media Matters reports on a leaked memo that
reveals the Fox News Channel's unfairness and imbalance with regard
    to climate science:
"In the midst of global climate change talks last December, a top
Fox News official sent an email questioning the 'veracity of climate
change data' and ordering the network's journalists to 'refrain from
asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period
without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based upon
data that critics have called into question.'...
"The directive, sent by Fox News Washington managing editor Bill
Sammon, was issued less than 15 minutes after Fox correspondent
Wendell Goler accurately reported on-air that the United Nations'
World Meteorological Organization announced that 2000-2009 was 'on
track to be the warmest [decade] on record.'..
"This latest revelation comes after Media Matters uncovered an email
sent by Sammon to Fox journalists at the peak of the health care
reform debate, ordering them to avoid using the term 'public option'
and instead use variations of 'government option.' That email echoed
advice from a prominent Republican pollster on how to help turn
public opinion against health care reform...
"Sources familiar with the situation in Fox's Washington bureau have
expressed concern about Sammon using his position to 'slant' Fox's
supposedly neutral news coverage to the right."
