*Climate Change*Skepticism Fueled by Gut Reaction to Local Weather
    <https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/climate-change-skepticism-fueled-by-gut-reaction-to-local-weather/>

Scientific American -‎5 hours ago‎

The public's perception of global warming is shaped by the weather
that people experience. ...People who live in areas where high
temperature records are broken are more likely to believe in*global
warming*than those who do not....In areas that experienced record
lows, people were less inclined to believe in the mainstream climate
science that shows human activity is warming the Earth. ....
Researchers noted that the discrepancy resulted from the public's
equating of weather with climate, which many assume are the same.
When they head outside and the weather is extremely hot and humid,
they are more likely to believe in a warming climate, which is a
weather trend that lasts for decades. In addition, the term “global
warming” has convinced many people that they must feel record warmth
for the theory of a hotter planet to hold true, researchers found....
A majority of Americans favor political action on global warming,
despite the presidential victory of Donald Trump, who questions
climate science, the survey found. It shows that almost two-thirds
of registered voters across all parties want the Trump
administration and Congress to do more to address global warming.
Almost three-quarters of Republicans and about 90 percent of
Democrats want corporations to do more on climate change.

Warmer climate threatening to northern birds -- ScienceDaily

Will northern birds such as the Siberian jay and the red-flanked
bluetail be gone in 50 years? There is a huge risk since a
deteriorating climate for breeding is imminent. Another six species
are also under threat and will require particular conservation
actions in order to survive, according to a researcher who has
    developed a species analysis method....
"More than (sic) of every ten bird species that breeds in the cool
climate regions of northern Europe will be vulnerable if
temperatures keep increasing. Two examples are the Siberian jay and
the red-flanked bluetail," says Anouschka Hof, former researcher at
the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå
    University...
In collaboration with American researchers, the Umeå-based research
team has studied 180 species that currently breed in subarctic and
arctic regions by analysing and assessing their vulnerability to new
climates as well as their lifespan.

Climate scientist bracing for 'onslaught of intimidation' under Trump
<http://mashable.com/2016/12/18/michael-mann-climate-change-trump/#xRZnszDtTaqw>

U.S. climate scientists say they worry the incoming Trump
administration might do more than cut off their research funding.
Some also fear they could receive personal attacks and death threats
    simply for doing their jobs...
Michael Mann, a climate researcher at Penn State University, said he
    knows exactly what that's like...
Over the last decade, Mann has been singled out by Republican
senators and Pennsylvania and Virginia officials, who falsely
accused the scientist of distorting his data and perpetuating the
"hoax" that human activities are causing climate change...
Mann said that he and his colleagues are now "bracing for a renewed
onslaught of intimidation, from inside and outside government,"
given the coming changes in Washington. ...
"I fear the chill that could descend," he wrote in the op-ed.

Judge: Seattle Kids Can Move Ahead With Climate Rights Case
<http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/judge-seattle-kids-move-ahead-climate-rights-case-44312250>

Eight Seattle children should have "their day in court" to argue
that Washington state and others aren't protecting them from climate
    change, a judge ruled...
King County Superior Court Judge Hollis Hill on Monday allowed the
young petitioners to move ahead in their case against the state,
writing that "it is time for these youth to have the opportunity to
address their concerns in a court of law, concerns raised under
statute and under the state and federal constitutions."...
The petitioners, between 12 and 16 years old, had asked the judge
last month to find the state Department of Ecology in contempt for
failing to adequately protect them and future generations from
    global warming...
The judge on Monday said Ecology had complied with her orders by
adopting the Clean Air Rule within the timeline set by the court,
and so denied the youth's request to find Ecology in contempt.

*These two sentences could hint at the next threat to climate science
under Trump
<These%20two%20sentences%20could%20hint%20at%20the%20next%20threat%20to%20climate%20science%20under%20Trump>*

One of the biggest controversies of the Trump transition so far has
been about, of all things, politics and science.
It turns on a questionnaire the transition team for the Energy
Department sent to that agency seeking out the names of staffers who
participated in international climate change meetings — names the
    agency refused to provide....
if a passage from the 2016 Republican Party platform is to be
taken seriously, this could be just the beginning when it comes to
challenging federal scientists in particular, and questioning how
    they do their work...
    The passage reads:
Information concerning a changing climate, especially projections
into the long-range future, must be based on dispassionate analysis
of hard data. We will enforce that standard throughout the executive
branch, among civil servants and presidential appointees alike...
If sentiments like those expressed in the language were to be
somehow implemented in federal agencies, that would have
implications for a government that employs climate-focused
researchers at NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
    Administration and other agencies. ...
In addition to asking who attended meetings relating to climate
change in the now disavowed memo, the Energy Department transition
team also posed a question about so-called “integrated assessment
models” used to study the nation's energy and climate future. It
asked about some of the assumptions programmed into such models,
including the agency's view of the correct “equilibrium climate
    sensitivity.”
