Climate change: North Pole to reach 50 degrees warmer than normal
<http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2016/1221/Climate-change-North-Pole-to-reach-50-degrees-warmer-than-normal>*

Temperatures are expected to climb to just below the freezing point
on Thursday, much higher than is usual during an Arctic winter.
And without an icy barrier between a warming ocean and the air,
there is nothing to cool off the Arctic air and prevent a massive
    temperature spike.
"It's all expected," research professor Jennifer Francis of Rutgers
University told the Guardian in November, referring to the high
temperatures during that month. "There is nothing but climate change
    that can cause these trends."

Now a new study warns that the/Arctic/melt could trigger "tipping
points" .Now a new study warns that the Arctic melt could trigger
"tipping points" that speed up global warming around the world. A
spokesperson for the World Meteorological Organisation tells the New
Statesman: "We are entering a new climate era." ..."Less sea ice
means less sunlight reflected into space and more absorbed by the
oceans, so the temperature of the Arctic (and the world)
increases... an example of what we call positive feedback."...
With 2016 on track to be the hottest year on record, further melting
of the world's glacier and ice caps looks assured. As for more
geographically specific predictions, scientists are still wary of
saying for certain. According to Mark Serreze, director of the
National Snow and Ice Data Center in America,...
"There is a strong debate ongoing in the science community regarding
how a warming Arctic might influence weather patterns in the middle
latitudes. Some scientists argue that we are already seeing some of
these effects – things like stuck weather patterns whereby Chicago
is in a deep freeze while at the same time Alaska is seeing extreme
    warmth.

* This City Just Banned Virtually All New Dirty Energy Infrastructure
<https://www.thenation.com/article/this-city-just-banned-virtually-all-new-dirty-energy-infrastructure/>*

*Portland, Oregon* has adopted a first-of-its-kind offensive
strategy to prevent new oil, gas, and coal export facilities from
    being built.
a groundbreaking new zoning ordinance that effectively bans all
new fossil fuel export infrastructure within the city's
limits—including new port facilities for shipping coal, and holding
tanks for oil and natural gas—and prevents existing facilities from
expanding. The vote marks a hard-fought victory for local activists
and environmental groups. And, in anticipation of the Trump
administration's pro-fossil fuel agenda, it signals to other cities
that innovative action to counter climate change is still possible
    at a local level....
....a well-organized pack of activist opponents, who submitted
thousands of letters, emails and calls to City Hall, as well as
Portland-area scientists who produced voluminous reports
highlighting the potential catastrophe posed by mile-long trains
filled with propane traversing the city's rails each day,...
Federal law prohibits municipalities from blocking or otherwise
interfering with rail transit and interstate pipelines. Still,
cities have wide latitude to govern their own health and safety, and
    by blocking export infrastructure, ...
No matter how many climate deniers occupy positions of power in
Washington, DC, cities can and will lead the way on climate.

*(Video) Dr Katharine Hayhoe - Religion has nothing to say about climate
change, right?.... <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W53uRqITk2I>*

    How do I know?
Because when it comes to making statements about climate change,
    it's not just the Pope.
Nearly every major Christian denomination, and world religion has
    something to say about it.
From the Episcopal church, they say, "We are painfully aware, that
those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere are responsible
for the majority of climate change.... Accordingly,we hold a
particular responsibility for the changes that will reverse the
    trajectory
of atmospheric warming, and safeguard the sanctityof what our God
    calls 'very good.
From the other side of the world, here's part of the Hindu
    declaration on climate change.
"We must consider the effect of our actions, not just on ourselves,
    and those humans around us,
but on all beings. We have a dharmic duty for each of us to do our
part, in ensuring we have a functioning, abundant and bountiful planet."
There's even an Islamic declaration on global climate change. "Our
species,"those selected to be a caretaker or steward of the earth,
has been the cause of such corruption and devastation on it, that we
are in danger of ending life as we know it on our planet.
"This current rate of climate change cannot be sustained, and the
Earth's fine equilibrium may soon be lost.
Faith and science, data and sacred texts, on climate change, they're
    painting the same picture....

problem: There are a lot of states — 50, last time I counted! That's
a lot of legislatures, lots of governors and public utility

We've entered a new political era and emotions are raw—even over a
scientifically settled topic such as*climate change*. Discussions
that escalate into arguments can easily ruin a family holiday party
or sour a dinner with friends. *...*The trick is to use patience,
tolerance, an optimistic tone—and last, but not least, a keen
understanding of your audience—to nudge your climate-skeptic sister
or father-in-law. You may find they're suddenly open to your views.*...
*1. First of all: Don't get angry

*This Day in Climate History December 22, 2011
<http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2011/12/22/conservatives-climate-change-facts/>-
from D.R. Tucker*

December 22, 2011: In Commentary magazine, former George W. Bush
    administration official Peter Wehner writes:
"Our task is to win the debate on the merits, to employ, as best we
can, honest and credible arguments in order to ascertain the reality
of things. And if the science shows that Earth is warming and that
humans have played a role in that, then we need to accept it, even
if that puts us on the same side with some individuals we don't find
particularly appealing. What matters is where the truth lies, not
the company we find ourselves in...
"In 2006, the Climate Science Program, a federal program under the
direction of the Bush White House and sponsored by agencies
including NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, found 'clear evidence of human influences on the
climate system.' There are several others I could cite.
"The point is that these reports are sober, measured and serious.
They make a scientific, not a polemical, case for AGW. It's possible
they are wrong. But their case has been made in a persuasive and
empirical manner...it matters that all the world's major science
academies have said that AGW is occurring, and they have supplied
the empirical case for their findings. The challenge for
conservatives is to engage the most serious and honest arguments of
those who believe in AGW, not simply lock in on the global
alarmists. And the temptation conservatives need to resist is to
portray the entire climate change movement as consisting of
individuals who are more interested in ideology than science...for
some on the right...to insist that AGW is a hoax, the product (more
or less) of a massive conspiracy, is, I believe, damaging to
conservatism. That is something I do care about. And more than that,
it is, from what I can tell, a position at odds with where the
evidence leads. Contemporary liberalism can do as it will. But for
conservatism, facts–those stubborn facts–need to be our guiding star."
