Donald Trump and the Triumph of*Climate-Change* Denial
    <https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/12/donald-trump-climate-change-skeptic-denial/510359/>

The Atlantic -‎12 hours ago‎

The science of man-made global warming has only grown more
conclusive. So why have Republicans become less convinced it’s real
over the past decade and a half?
"...the U.S. Republican Party is an anomaly in denying
    anthropogenic climate change." ...
Trump's victory sends a message that failing to embrace*climate
science*still isn't disqualifying for a presidential candidate, even
as scientists warn that the devastating consequences of*global
warming*are under way and expected to intensify in the*...
If Trump fails to take climate change seriously, the federal
government may do little to address the threat of a warming planet
in the next four years. A presidential administration hostile to
climate science also threatens to deepen, or at the very least
prolong, the skepticism that already exists in American political
life. *"*If the Trump administration continues to push the false
claim that global warming is a hoax, not happening, not human
caused, or not a serious problem, I’d expect many conservative
Republican voters to follow their lead,*"* said Anthony Leiserowitz,
the director of Yale University’s Program on Climate Change
    Communication....
In a deeply divided country, adopting views on climate change that
conflict with scientific evidence can actually be a rational choice.
Liberals and conservatives frequently spend time with like-minded
individuals, and people across the political spectrum may have a
better chance of fitting in if they embrace shared partisan
beliefs—regardless of whether those beliefs contradict scientific
fact. This helps explain why highly educated Republicans are
actually more likely to reject climate science. ...
*...*The power and influence of corporations relative to the
government might also help explain why skepticism has thrived. An
ideological preference for free markets may make some politicians
and voters in the United States more sympathetic to arguments that
environmental regulations will hurt the private sector—even if those
arguments are used to dismiss climate science.*

For Global Investors, 'Uncertainty' Over Business*Climate*Under
    Trump

It can take decades for a country build up a name as a good place to
do business, and the U.S. consistently ranks among the best. But
some economists say its reputation for trustworthiness could be
challenged if President-elect Trump makes good on*...*"*If there's
one thing that deters investment, it is uncertainty,*"* he says.
*"*And we're seeing uncertainty. You don't quite know what you're in
for if you consider doing business in the U.S.*"*...
It's still unclear whether there will be a bright line between
Trump's business dealings and the White House. His children have sat
in on meetings with world leaders and advisers. Trump has said his
sons would run his companies while he's president — but he could
still make money off his name used on properties across the world.*

Hilary Franz won 53 percent of the statewide vote in November but
carried only eight counties - all west of the Cascades. She will lead
the state’s largest firefighting force, manage 5.6 million acres of
state-owned lands and ensure revenues from logging, land leases and
other operations for school construction and other projects.... the
agency needs critical funding to better manage wildfires and restore
the health of forests in poor shape... it won’t be easy, given
competing budget needs and a court mandate to fully fund the state’s
    basic-education system

There is no massive conspiracy to create and maintain a*global
warming*scare. Hundreds of mature, dedicated, sincere meteorological
scientists have worked hard during their entire careers to
    advance*climate science*and develop the best predictions....Their
work has been critically reviewed for decades by hundreds of their
peers - independent scientists - in the domain of open scientific
    literature....
Our problem now is that human society was constructed to be
consistent with the climate of the last few thousand years. The new
climate will be different. Therefore, the slowing of climate change,
or adaptation to it, will be expensive. Regardless, it is a subject
    to be taken seriously.

assessing carbon output from the products it sells. Heede’s work is
groundbreaking, but he has learned that holding the world’s largest
publicly traded petroleum and petrochemical company accountable for
climate change entails personal risk..."The company made a choice in
the early 1990s," Heede claims, "to invest in climate obfuscation
and denial, which it did very successfully with massive public
confusion about climate science and the election of climate deniers
to Congress. The campaign succeeds to this day."...
.Heede dismisses the subpoena as a bullying tactic and has refused
to cooperate. A U.S. District Court last week put the subpoena on
hold. Otherwise, Heede could face a contempt of Congress charge....
In July, Heede was subpoenaed by the House Committee on Science,
Space and Technology, chaired by Congressman Lamar Smith, a known
climate-change denier. According to Wikipedia, the Republican
congressman from Texas has received more than $600,000 in campaign
donations from the fossil-fuel industry during his 30 years in
Congress. The committee is effectively intimidating a number
of*climate science*advocates. Similar leverage is being used by the
