The Democratic Party has made a big shift toward*climate*action in
the last four years

...This election cycle is very different. The Democratic primary
candidates competed over who would be the toughest on fossil fuels and
climate change. Hillary Clinton has called for banning offshore drilling
in the Arctic and Atlantic, phasing out fossil fuel production on public
land, and imposing stricter fracking regulations. She did not get there
on her own: Both Martin O'Malley and Bernie Sanders challenged her from
the left on climate change with even more ambitious proposals. The
Sanders' camp also pushed the Democratic platform committee with a
number of climate-related demands, resulting in a document that calls
for carbon pricing and rejecting future infrastructure projects that
would increase U.S. carbon emissions.... stop far short of what is
needed to avert catastrophic*climate change*. "This is a Democratic
Party that has embraced *climate science*and*climate*solutions," Erich
Pica, president of the lefty green group Friends of the Earth, told

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton chose Virginia Senator
Tim Kaine as her running mate, drawing a mixed reaction from the climate
community. While the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation support
his candidacy, groups such as 350.org and Climate Hawks Vote were less
enthusiastic. Though Kaine supports the Clean Power Plan and opposed the
construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, he also has supported offshore
drilling and natural gas exports. On the eve of the Democratic National
Convention, thousands of protesters took to the sweltering streets of
Philadelphia to demand support for solar, wind and other forms of
renewable energy and a ban on fracking. (*Kaine Pick:***InsideClimate

*What Advocates of Strong Government Action on Climate Change Should
Learn from Sociology

This is the 3rd entry in a series that has been examining the practical
significance for climate change policy formation of insights of
sociologists about the failure of governments to respond to the enormous
threat of climate change...This series is reviewing a new book about the
social causes of climate change. The book is Climate Change and Society,
Sociological Perspectives by Riley Dunlap and Robert Brulle, eds.,
Oxford University Press, 2015, New York....In the first entry in the
series, we described why sociological explanations for the success of
the opponents of climate change policies and identification of deep
ethical and moral problems with arguments made by climate change policy
opponents largely have been missing from mainstream climate change
literature and the media coverage of human-induced warming issues....In
the second entry in this series, we looked at the insights from
sociology about the morally reprehensible climate change disinformation
countermovement....We now review what advocates of strong government
action on climate change should learn from sociologists...1. Pay
attention to ... how civil society’s understanding of climate change
issues has been manipulated by powerful forces,...For a discussion of
these tactics and why they are morally reprehensibility, see,An Ethical
Analysis of the Climate Change Disinformation Campaign: Is This A New
Kind of Assault on Humanity

religious leaders have added their weight to calls for action on climate
change, with one of the largest and oldest black churches in the US
warning that black people are disproportionally harmed by global warming
and fossil fuel pollution...The African Methodist Episcopal church has
passed its first resolution in its 200-year history devoted to climate
change, calling for a swift transition to renewable energy...“We can
move away from the dirty fuels that make us sick and shift toward safe,
clean energy like wind and solar that help make every breath our
neighbors and families take a healthy one,” states the resolution, which
also points to research showing that black children are four times as
likely as white children to die from asthma..*
