The United Sweats of America! Heatwave continues to spread across the
country and 26 states are under heat advisory - with New York City set
to reach 97F
People are being urged to take public transportation in the 26 states
under a heat advisory due to the severe weather
An air quality warning is also in effect for New York City due to the
city's high ozone pollution levels
All but one of the Lower 48 States had hit 90 degrees somewhere by
Friday afternoon, forecasters said
For much of the country, the 'merciless' heat and humidity was expected
to get even worse over the weekend
Around 30 states are expected to hit 100 degrees on Monday, but extra
hot weather will ease a bit next week

Middle East in the grips of a major*heatwave*

Although a small portion of this warming is due to the*El Nino*earlier
in the year, a much more likely cause is the continuing emissions of
greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere as a result of human activity...On
Thursday Mitribah, Kuwait reported a maximum of 54.0C (129.2F). Although
it has yet to be officially verified, if confirmed, this is the highest
temperature ever recorded in the Eastern Hemisphere...Globally, only
Death Valley, California has recorded higher temperatures. The absolute
record here is 56.7C (134F) recorded on 10 July 1913...For many years,
the record was officially held by Aziza, Libya with 58C (136.4F). In
2012 this was disqualified by the World Meteorological Organisation
after it was decided that this temperature was unreliable. (The
observing site was not representative of its surroundings, the
thermometer was not fit for purpose and the weather observer was new and
untrained.)

This Republican says his party's denial of*climate science*is
    'courting disaster' with voters

Former South Carolina congressman Bob Inglis says Donald Trump and his
Republican party are "shrinking in science denial" on*climate
change*because they don't like the solutions proposed by Democrats. But
he says there's a simple conservative solution .."We're courting
disaster," Inglis says of his party. "We're basically pulling defeat
down upon us by taking on this retro affect that says that climate
change isn't real... (It's) out of step with where the science is and
where the smart money is. ... The smart money is already moving to act
on climate."...Inglis aligns himself squarely with that "smart money.
After losing a GOP primary to a Tea Party challenger in 2010, despite a
90+ percent conservative voting record, he formed an organization called
"republicEn" — for "Energy" and "Enterprise" — that's pushing for what
it calls free enterprise approaches to solving our energy and climate
challenges..

    China Court Imposes Unprecedented*Air Pollution*Penalty

“I think everybody realizes, not only for the sake of*climate change*,
but also for*air pollution*, [in] very local provinces, we need coal
consumption to go down even further and more rapidly,” he added.

A Sequel to the Paris*Climate*Accord Takes Shape in Vienna
    <http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/24/world/europe/vienna-sequel-paris-climate-accord.html>

New York Times -‎49 minutes ago‎

WASHINGTON - When negotiators from nearly 200 countries gathered outside
Paris in December for the United Nations summit meeting on*climate
change*, they reached the first agreement to take action on curbing
their planet-warming pollution. ...While the Paris agreement aims to
reduce the use of coal and oil, which produce the carbon dioxide
emissions that are the chief cause of global warming, negotiators in
Vienna pushed ahead on a deal to ban the use of hydrofluorocarbons,
chemicals used in air-conditioners and refrigerators. Although they
contribute only a small percentage of the world’s greenhouse gases,
these chemicals, known as HFCs, can trap heat in the atmosphere at
levels a thousand times higher than carbon dioxide can, according to
published scientific studies.
Kerry:*Climate Change*as Dangerous as Terrorism

European Union*Climate*Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete welcomes U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry, from left, for talks to reduce
hydrofluorocarbons under the Montreal Protocol at Vienna International
Center in Vienna, Austria, Friday July 22, 2016...."What you are doing
here right now is of equal importance, because it has the ability
literally to save life on this planet," Kerry told the conference of
parties to the 1987 Montreal Protocol, a global treaty to end the use of
many chlorofluorocarbons from aerosols and refrigerants that deplete the
ozone layer.

Exxon allies cry foul over law firm in*climate*probe

Exxon Mobil Corp.'s allies are crying foul over the role of a law firm
involved in the fight over the oil giant's history with*climate
change*.... Singer’s firm, an established outfit with a reputation as an
aggressive plaintiffs’ advocate, stands to take in as much as 27 percent
of any monetary damages, plus certain costs, under a retainer agreement
obtained by The Hill through a public records request. *...That
arrangement has sparked criticism from Exxon allies, who say it gives
the firm an inappropriate profit motive and that Walker is ceding too
much authority to outside lawyers.*

Ghastly weather: What Frankenstein can tell us on*climate change*

Two centuries later, in a world of frets and fears about human
responsibility for*climate change*, the cultural fallout from that “year
without a summer” still colours the stories we tell....Frankenstein,
though, conceives of something grander than another doomsday chill.
Along with its mood of risk and guilt come idealism and hope – dashed
not by the high-minded Creature, but by the self-hatred and broken vows
of his fabricator. Mary Shelley delivers heroism along with hubris.

Currently planned gas production expansion in Appalachia would make
meeting U.S. climate goals impossible,' says Oil Change
International...."As one of the most susceptible states in the country
to the devastating effects of*sea-level rise*, Virginia cannot afford to
be locked into decades of more reliance on fossil fuels," added Anne
Havemann, general counsel at the Chesapeake*Climate**...There are 19 key
new proposed natural gas pipelines in the Appalachian basin. All of them
are incompatible with the Paris target and existing U.S. climate
goals;...Stopping this new supply infrastructure is critical to the Keep
It In the Ground movement's goals of stopping infrastructure that
creates carbon lock-in; and*....*All new energy projects must pass a
climate test to prove their viability in a climate safe world. These new
gas pipelines fail that test.*

'Cold*climate*' gene linked to schizophrenia: study

When humans walked out of Africa about 60,000 years ago and slowly made
their way to Europe, their genes underwent an important mutation...The
change allowed their body to survive the cold climate, but that came at
a steep price that left many Europeans today prone to developing a
serious mental illness, according to a joint study by Chinese and
American scientists...The international research team led by Professor
Li Ming of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Kunming Institute of Zoology
found that a gene associated with schizophrenia appeared about 40,000
years ago, when the first modern humans arrived in Europe and wiped out
the Neanderthals...The team’s research paper on the evolutionary
pattern of schizophrenia risk variants was published in the July 4 issue
of Oxford Journals’ Schizophrenia Bulletin...Schizophrenia is a mental
disorder with a wide range of symptoms, most notably delusions and
hallucinations, such as hearing voices, social withdrawal and aggressive
behaviour.

Writing the book on health, risk and*climate change*

...the recently published book"The Five Horsemen of the Modern World:
Climate, Food, Water, Disease and Obesity,"
<https://www.amazon.com/Five-Horsemen-Modern-World-Climate/dp/0231170025/ref=sr_1_1>
..In recent decades, we have seen five perilous and interlocking trends
dominate global discourse: irreversible climate change, extreme food and
water shortages, rising chronic illnesses, and rampant obesity. Why
can't we make any progress in counteracting these problems despite vast
expenditures of intellectual, institutional, and social capital? What
makes these global emergencies the "wicked problems" that resist our
best efforts and only grow more daunting? ... I was struck by the sense
of doom and gloom that was evident among climate researchers.... how is
the persistently downhill path of my seemingly different five horsemen
to be explained? ... what in medicine is called a differential
diagnosis, that of sorting out of many symptoms those that identify a
specific disease — and then going from there to appropriate treatment.
That is what I have tried to do with the five horsemen.... the general
public in most countries is aware of the dangers of the five horsemen —
but all tend to give it a low priority..... there was then the emergence
of neoliberalism, ....doubled-edge sword..is industrial progress and GDP
growth that gives us global warming. It is technical wizardry that
allows the depletion of deep underground water that cannot be
replenished. It is cheaper and more available food that gives obesity.
And that obesity in turn gives us excessive heart disease and
diabetes... industry opposition.to regulation is a striking feature of
all my horsemen..."With business responsible for the bulk of climate
financial flows, and producing far and away the greater part of global
GDP and jobs, its active support will be the key to sealing any deal
governments make, or to move ahead if negotiations fail. Moreover,
corporate engagements and activity can be pivotal factors in disarming
skeptical outlooks."... two other ingredients seem necessary as well:
grass roots movements (as personified in the New York march); and
legislative interest and action.
