Former Treasury Chiefs Tell SEC to Crack Down on Climate
<http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/companies-should-be-required-to-reveal-climate-risks/>
Scientific American -3 hours ago
*Three former Treasury secretaries say firms are not giving investors
honest information...*A revision could require companies to disclose far
more about*climate change*and other environmental risks than ever
before...Federal law requires companies to tell investors about risks
that may significantly affect their business. Still, public companies'
financial statements often are vague, and multiple firms are known to
use verbatim answers when explaining how a given risk relates to their
operations..."Companies continue to disclose these risks poorly, if at
all, using mostly boilerplate language that fails to inform or suit
investors' needs,"
Democratic Platform Calls For WWII-Scale Mobilization To
Solve*Climate*Crisis
<http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2016/07/22/3801094/democratic-platform-climate-wwii-mobilization/>
ThinkProgress -3 hours ago
The platform makes for the starkest possible contrast with a party that
just nominated Donald Trump - a man who has called*climate change*a hoax
invented by and for the Chinese, who has denied basic reality such as
the drought in California, and who*has vowed to (try to) scuttle the
unanimous agreement by the world’s nations in Paris to take whatever
measures are necessary to avert catastrophic warming and keep total
warming “well below 2°C.*"*...The final draft of the platform — which
must still be approved by the Democratic National Convention next week —
also calls for a price on CO2 and other greenhouse gases: *"*Democrats
believe that carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases should
be priced to reflect their negative externalities, and to accelerate the
transition to a clean energy economy and help meet our climate goals.*"*

Oil Lobby Paid Washington Post and Atlantic to
Host*Climate-Change*Deniers at RNC
<https://theintercept.com/2016/07/22/oil-lobby-paid-washington-post-and-atlantic-to-host-climate-change-deniers-at-rnc/>
The Intercept -1 hour ago
*Evidence of human-made climate change is so conclusive that it’s wrong
for journalists to treat its denial like a reasonable point of view. But
it is a new low for major media groups to sell their brand to lobbyists
and let climate truthers go unchallenged*....And The Atlantic was hardly
alone. At the Republican National Convention, the American Petroleum
Institute also paid the Washington Post and Politico to host panel
conversations where API literature was distributed, API representatives
gave opening remarks, and not one speaker was an environmentalist,
climate expert, scientists, or Democrat.....The event was sponsored by
the American Petroleum Institute, the lobbying arm of fossil fuel giants
like ExxonMobil, Chevron, and ConocoPhilips....Johnson, a climate denier
and influential member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce,
spoke of a future when American scientists “solve these big problems”
and “figure out how to harness the sun’s energy, and store it up, so
that we can put it out over time.” His hypothetical invention, of
course, is called a battery, and was invented over 200 years
ago...Instead of balancing Johnson with an environmentalist or
a*climate*scientist, The Atlantic paired Johnson with another
notorious*climate*denier: Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., who is an energy
adviser to Donald Trump. Cramer has called*global warming* ...The
Washington Post’s discussion was hosted at a swanky brewpub the
newspaper rented out for the week, a stone’s throw from the main
entrance to the Quicken Loans Arena where the convention was held. The
American Petroleum Institute was also an underwriter for the rental, and
the brewpub offered guests free hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and
complimentary massages in a side room. API literature was stacked on
tables, including the check-in desk....Not to be outdone, Politico
rented out the entire 21st floor of a high-rise hotel and offered guests
hits from a prominently featured “flavored oxygen bar.” At Politico‘s
API-sponsored event, the oil lobbying group’s CEO, Jack Gerard, opened
the event by telling the audience that “the United States has become the
superpower of energy in the world.” - Alex Emmons
Sizzling Midwest Feels a Preview of a Hotter Future*Climate*
<https://insideclimatenews.org/news/21072016/sizzling-midwest-heat-wave-future-climate-change-global-warming-noaa>
InsideClimate News -18 hours ago
Extreme heat waves like the current string of scorching days in the
Midwest have become more frequent worldwide in the last 60 years, and
climate scientists expect that human-caused global warming will
exacerbate the dangerous trend in coming decades. It comes with
potentially life-threatening consequences for millions of
people...Research has shown that overall mortality increases by 4
percent during heat waves compared to normal days in the U.S. A study in
the journal Environmental Health Perspectives in 2011 suggested that
rising summer temperatures could kill up to 2,200 more people per year
in Chicago alone during the last two decades of the 21st century.*...The
Midwest heatwave is peaking just as NOAA announced that last month was
the warmest June on record for Earth. It was the 14th consecutive month
that the average global temperature record was broken, making it the
longest streak of record-warm months in 137 years, according to the
agency's monthly state of the climate report. Averaged across land and
sea surfaces, the global temperature was 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit above
the 20th century average, topping the record set just last year. The
last time the global temperature for June was below average was in 1976.*
*Climate change*: Greenland loses a trillion tonnes of ice in four years
as melting rate triples
<http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change-global-warming-greenland-ice-melting-rate-sea-levels-rise-a7147846.html>
The Independent -16 hours ago
It's no news that Greenland is in serious trouble - but now, new
research has helped quantify just how bad its problems are. A satellite
study, published last week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters,
suggests that the Greenland ice sheet losta whopping 1 trillion tonnes
of ice between the years 2011 and 2014 alone. And a big portion of it
came from just five glaciers, about which scientists now have more cause
to worry than ever.
North American forests unlikely to save us from*climate change*,
study finds
<http://phys.org/news/2016-07-north-american-forests-climate.html>
Phys.Org -Jul 20, 2016
Forests take up 25-30 percent of human-caused emissions of carbon
dioxide—a strong*greenhouse gas*—and are therefore considered to play a
crucial role in mitigating the speed and magnitude of*climate change*.
However, a new study that combines future*...The study calls into
question previous conclusions about how forests will respond to warmer
average temperatures, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and shifting
rainfall patterns..."In Alaska, for example, where trees have been
projected to respond positively to warming temperatures under the boreal
greening effect, we see that trees are now responding negatively
instead," Evans said. "Trees in very high latitudes are limited by cold
temperatures, so yes, in warmer years they grow more, but there is a
tipping point, and once they go past that, a warmer climate becomes a
bad thing instead of a good thing."..."It's like a thermostat gone bad,"
Evans said. "Forests act as a carbon sink by taking carbon dioxide out
of atmosphere, but the more the climate is warming, the slower the trees
are growing, the less carbon they suck up, the faster the climate is
changing."**Read more at:

Republicans in Cleveland Deny*Climate Change*as Arctic Snow Turns
Pink
<https://theintercept.com/2016/07/21/republicans-in-cleveland-deny-climate-change-as-arctic-snow-turns-pink/>
The Intercept -7 hours ago
Donald Trump's reported top pick for energy secretary, oil and fracking
billionaire Harold Hamm, declared on the Republican National Convention
stage on Wednesday night, “Every time we can't drill a well in America,
terrorism is being funded...Most of the congressional Republicans that
believe in addressing climate change stayed home from the
convention...Meanwhile, scientists noted that the earth’s clouds had
changed shape, growing taller and moving away from the tropics toward
the poles, encouraging drier weather in the subtropics.
