Oregon derailment likely to reignite rail-by-oil safety concerns

A Union Pacific train carrying crude oil derailed and caught fire along
Oregon's scenic Columbia River gorge on Friday, forcing the closure of
an interstate highway and the evacuation of a school in the first major
rail accident involving crude in a year.

*Proposed Washington oil spill safeguards criticized at public hearing;
train derails, burns 100 miles away

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Department of Ecology on Friday
held a public hearing to discuss its proposed new rules to protect the
environment from oil spills during a train derailment.

*Climate*Is Poised To Be A Divisive Issue For This Group Of Voters

CWA and other unions that are joining the chorus of voices calling for
action on*climate change*represent an important shift for labor, which
has historically been somewhat leery of environmental regulation.

    Alaska's huge*climate*mystery — and its global consequences

Washington Post -

*The fear is that with the higher latitudes of the planet warming
extremely rapidly, that heat itself, and some of its consequences — such
as raging wildfires in northern forests — could unleash a climate
disaster. Perennially frozen northern soils, known as permafrost,
contain enormous amounts of carbon because the slow and cold chemistry
of the Arctic makes them the repository of thousands of years of frozen
plant remains. Warming could cause this plant matter to break down, be
decomposed by bacteria and emit ancient carbon to the atmosphere in the
form of carbon dioxide and methane...And the amounts of carbon involved
are enormous — one common estimate is that there’s more than twice as
much carbon stored in northern permafrost as there is currently wafting
about the planet’s atmosphere.

Scientists Seek a New Measure for Methane. Here's Why.

There may be a significant problem with the measuring stick scientists
use to account for how much methane is affecting*climate change*,
according to a recent study led by researchers at Oxford University. The
long-term effect of methane ... Nature*...*

Rising Demand for Air Conditioners May Worsen*Global Warming*, Study
    Says | The Weather Channel

Rising demand for air conditioners will worsen*global warming*if steps
aren't taken to change the cooling technology we currently use, says a
new study from the Berekley National Laboratory.

Nuclear Option Could Be Best Bet to Combat*Climate Change*

(opinion) Many analysts are now calling not just to preserve existing
nuclear power plants, but to invest in new designs to help fight*climate
change*. “A new round of innovation for nuclear reactors would be quite
important,” said Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz*..*

*Why Scientists Are Amazed at Oilsands Smog Levels*
<http://thetyee.ca/News/2016/05/30/Oilsands-Smog-Levels/>
"one of the largest sources of anthropogenic secondary organic
aerosols in North America." ...
Pollution from industrial bitumen operations pulsates into the
atmosphere at the rate of 55 to 101 tonnes a day. Scientists aren't sure
if the pollution is coming from mine sites, upgraders, or 220 square
kilometres of lakes containing mining waste -- or all three... the
tarsands remain the largest single source of greenhouse gases in the
country. Environment Canada reported this year that the nation's oil and
gas sector was the largest greenhouse gas emitter in Canada and
accounted for 192 megatonnes or 26 per cent of the nation's total emissions.

Scientists compareclimate changeimpacts at 1.5C and 2C

<http://www.skepticalscience.com/scientists-compare-climate-impacts-1-5C-2C.html>

Half a degree makes a very big difference when judging how different
parts of the world will feel the effects ofclimate change...This is the
conclusion from the first study
<http://www.earth-syst-dynam-discuss.net/esd-2015-68/> to compare and
contrast the consequences of 1.5C world compared to a 2C world,
published today in /Earth System Dynamics/...Both 2C and 1.5C are
explicitly mentioned in the Paris agreement
<http://www.carbonbrief.org/category/policy/paris-2015> as potential
upper limits for global warming since the preindustrial era, but details
from scientists on how the temperature thresholds compare have been
sparse...For example, an extra 0.5C could see global sea levels rise
10cm more by 2100, water shortages in the Mediterranean double and
tropicalheatwaves last up to a month longer. The difference between 2C
and 1.5C is also “likely to be decisive for the future of coral reefs”,
with virtually all coral reefs at high risk of bleaching with 2C
warming...The authors presented their research today at the European
Geosciences Union <http://www.egu2016.eu/>, an annual major gathering of
geoscientists taking place this week in Vienna.
