*Arctic warming gives US and Europe the chills

Warming in the Arctic – one of the fastest-warming regions on the
planet – could be heightening the chances of extreme winters
<https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2016-10/uos-ecw102616.php>
in Europe and the US.....As the Arctic warms, the stratospheric jet
stream that brings occasionally catastrophic ice storms and record
snow falls to the eastern United States could also be on the move,
according to new research in the journal Nature Climate Change
<http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/v6/n11/full/nclimate3121.html>....
The phenomenon is a natural one. Some years the track of the jet
stream is wavy, and delivers severe cold weather to the
mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Some years the pattern
alters, and Europe in particular experiences mild winters. The
temperate zones have always experienced occasional extremes. But
climate change could be tilting the balance.

documentary featuring actor Leonardo DiCaprio exploring the already

Rich countries are still pushing dirty energy on poor ones

While much of the developed world is breaking the coal habit, with
the U.S. seeing the share of electricity so derived fall from nearly
half to less than a third in under a decade, and Canada and the
United Kingdom planning to phase it out entirely, wealthy nations
are selling expertise and helping to pay for poor countries like
Bangladesh to adopt the dirty fuel, locking them in to emissions
that poison their populations for decades and threaten the stability
of the earth’s climate. Governments, taxpayers, and investors
thousands of miles away will therefore assist in paying for plants
like Rampal—often couched as development aid or even financed with
green bonds—and their subsequent pollution and greenhouse gas
emissions.....Japan’s development agency, the Japan International
Cooperation Agency, practically wrote Bangladesh’s plan to boost its
power-generating capacity using coal—even as the government has
helped expand the reach of distributed solar power to at least 18
million people in the country, according to The New York Times.
These wealthy nations' attempts to ease construction of heavily
polluting coal plants occurs while the cost of new onshore wind
farms has fallen 30 percent between 2010 and 2015, according to
International Energy Agency data released Tuesday, and the cost of
large solar panels fell by two-thirds over the same period.
Most Corporate*Climate Change*Pledges Aren't Strict Enough To

Just 9% have set targets in line with meeting a "2˚C pathway"—the
long-held international target for limiting*global warming*to
relatively safe levels. We're reminded of this reality by a new
report from CDP (formerly the*Climate*Disclosure Project*...Ever
since climate change emerged as an issue of significant public
concern, companies have been making commitments to do something
about it. They've pledged to go carbon-neutral, all-renewable, or
cut emissions by such-and-such percentage by such-and-such future
date. These announcements have often sounded impressive and some
have been genuinely meaningful. But what they've accumulated in
publicity, they've frequently lost in incoherency and
incomparability. Because we don't have an agreed baseline for such
announcements, it's hard to know if they're off-the-charts bold, or
just so-so marketing efforts. see also

Polar vortex shifting due to*climate change*, extending winter,
study finds
<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2016/10/31/polar-vortex-shifting-due-to-climate-change-extending-winter-study-finds/>
Washington Post -Oct 31, 2016
*Global warming*could be making winters in eastern North America
even longer, according to a new study. The study finds that, because
of sea ice loss in the Arctic, the polar vortex is shifting and ...
Sea ice loss in this region may also be responsible for the polar
vortex weakening as well, according to independently published work
by climate researcher Judah Cohen of the private firm Atmospheric
Environmental Research. When the ice melts in this region and leaves
behind open water, more autumn snow falls downwind over the Eurasian
continent during fall,... The enhanced snow cover then promotes
atmospheric waves that destabilize and weaken the polar vortex, .*...*

Climate Change Is Already Forcing Americans to Move - Bloomberg ...
<https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-10-31/climate-change-is-already-forcing-americans-to-move>
Bloomberg -Oct 31, 2016
Climate displacement is real -- and it's hitting people in public
housing first...None of the people forced to leave their homes will
be there to move back in. Many of them left Punta Gorda altogether;
there was nowhere for them to stay. Helber thinks most went to
Tampa. Yet she says Punta Gorda fared better than most housing
authorities, because the units got rebuilt at all. "We refused to
give up," Helber told me....As global warming causes more extreme
weather and sea-level rise, coastal communities around the U.S. are
starting to think about whether, and how, to help people move away
from the water. But one group of Americans is already being
displaced by climate change -- not through innovative urban and
land-use planning, but official indifference......"If this trend in
severe weather continues, taking away more housing units from this
already underserved population, there won't be a sufficient number
of units left," Courtney Rice, HAI's communications director, told me.
