*On its way out, Obama administration moves to slam the door shut on
Arctic drilling

The Obama administration on Friday banned offshore drilling in the
Arctic, setting a likely collision course with President-elect
Donald Trump, who has vowed to "unleash" new energy production in
the United States by rolling back restrictions on oil and gas companies.
The move by the Interior Department, part of a new five-year plan
for energy development in federal waters, would put a temporary end
to exploration in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas off the Alaskan
coast. It also dropped plans to allow companies to drill for oil and
natural gas in the Atlantic Ocean off of four southeastern states,
including Virginia.

U.S. Climate Envoy Jonathan Pershing: Five Feet Of Sea Level Rise By
2050 Possible
<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/daphne-wysham/us-climate-envoy-jonathan_b_13070296.html>
"Five feet of sea level rise in less than 35 years — that is really
soon," said Pershing. "There are 65 million people now living in a
state of conflict and 140 million who live less than 3 feet above
sea level. Extrapolate to an amount two or three times the level of
conflict we have now, and you see that this is a huge crisis. If we
are lucky, we will have fewer people displaced, but I'm not
optimistic that small island states can be saved."
As if on cue, reports began to emerge in scientific circles that
Antarctica’s thawing was proceeding at a record pace, while Arctic
temperatures were at a crazy 36 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.

Inside the climate movement’s Trump-fighting strategy
<http://grist.org/politics/climate-movement-trump-strategy/>
But at worst...Trump and his administration of fossil fuel
executives will undo not just the incremental progress made under
President Obama’s second term, but over 40 years of environmental
progress since the inception of the Clean Air Act. Millions, even
billions, of people could be hurt because of a single U.S. election,
especially if America’s reversal sabotages the climate efforts of
other countries.
Strategy 1: Apply public pressure
Strategy 2: Thanks, Obama -- push through a series of finalized
regulations and public-lands protections, setting up obstacles to a
Republican polluter-free-for-all.
Strategy 3: Sue the bastards
Strategy 4: Win in the states
Strategy 5: Expand the movement
Key ... is not forgetting the larger stakes of the fight. "It’s
important to remind people that that there’s something fundamentally
awful about what he’s doing. It’s going to be important to not
normalize the Trump agenda. … The climate community is going to need
to keep doing that. If we fight this as a policy fight, we’re going
to lose."

The short answer is that, strictly speaking, the future of global
climate would have been fracked even had the election gone the other
way, unless stronger action to cut CO2 emissions is taken, very soon....
If you are in a new-found panic about the future of Earth’s climate,
know that what you’re feeling now would still have been almost as
appropriate had the election gone the other way. The fight to defend
Earth’s climate would still be just

Engaged Buddhism and a Universal Climate Change Ethic
<http://www.slideshare.net/JamesKing126/engaged-buddhism-and-a-universal-climate-change-ethic>
• A Universal Climate Change Ethic: • 1. Interdependence: Ecology
and Buddhism emphasize this: "Ecology and Buddhism are both about
the interdependence of all forms of existence, the former from a
scientific view, the latter in the existential and experiential
sense." (Jones 2003:170). • 2. Compassion: "a feeling of deep
sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune,
accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering."
(Dictionary.com 2016) • 3. Universal Responsibility:(a) considering
the ends of the particular action, (b) considering the conditions
necessary, and (c) considering the consequences of success (Shea and
Sitter 1989) • 4. Skillful Means: Specificity and unique
characteristics cannot be ignored. CHAPTER 3: A UNIVERSAL CLIMATE
