ExxonMobil sued over*climate*cover-up
<http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_round_up/2988181/exxonmobil_sued_over_climate_coverup.html>
The Ecologist -Sep 30, 2016
The Conservation Law Foundation has just filed the first lawsuit
against ExxonMobil for violations under the Clean Water Act and
other laws, committed in its deliberate, reckless and deceitful
cover-up of it's true knowledge of the dangers of*climate**...The
Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) filed a lawsuit today against
ExxonMobil for its endangerment of communities along the Mystic
River....It*'*s the first lawsuit of its kind in the nation since
revelations last year about the corporation*'*s decades-long
campaign to discredit climate science....Today*'*s filing comes
several months after CLF submitted a formal letter of intent to sue
ExxonMobil, a development that was announced at a press conference
in May...The suit focuses on Exxon*'*s violations of both the
federal Clean Water Act (CWA) and the Resource Conservation and
Recovery Act (RCRA), laws designed to protect the health and safety
of waterfront communities in the face of climate change....Exxon
*'*put communities in danger*'* for profit..."For more than three
decades, ExxonMobil has devoted its resources to deceiving the
public about climate science while using its knowledge about climate
change to advance its business operations", said CLF president
Bradley Campbell...."Communities were put in danger and remain in
danger, all to cut costs for one of the most profitable corporations
in the world. It*'*s time to make Exxon answer for decades of false
statements to the public and to regulators and ensure that its
Everett facility meets its legal obligation to protect thousands of
people and the Boston Harbor estuary from toxic water pollution."*
Could the International Criminal Court Start Prosecuting Climate

*Republican Attorneys General Met Secretly with Exxon Lobbyists to Stop
Climate Change Investigations
<http://www.desmogblog.com/2016/09/30/republican-attorneys-general-met-secretly-exxon-stop-climate-change-investigations>*
According to a new report by the watchdog group Center for Media and
Democracy (CMD), ExxonMobil sent teams of lobbyists to meet with
industry-friendly Republican state attorneys general to help stave
off a flurry of investigations about the company's role in obscuring
the link between carbon dioxide and climate change, a cover-up which
extends as far back as the 1970's.....The news comes the same week
that the environmental advocacy group Conservation Law
Foundationfiled a lawsuit against ExxonMobil
<http://www.clf.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/CLF-v.-ExxonMobil-Complaint.pdf>for
placing Massachusetts communities into harm's way, as a result of
this cover-up and its climate change implications...ExxonMobil is
currently being investigated by as many as20 different state
attorneys general
<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/17/science/exxon-mobil-fights-back-at-state-inquiries-into-climate-change-research.html?_r=0>for
this cover-up, whichDeSmog has covered extensively
<http://www.desmogblog.com/2016/04/26/there-no-doubt-exxon-knew-co2-pollution-was-global-threat-late-1970s>.
Exxon hasdecried the investigations
<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/17/science/exxon-mobil-fights-back-at-state-inquiries-into-climate-change-research.html?_r=0>as
“politically motivated” witch-hunts designed to intimidate the
company and gain political points with American voters....
theCMDreport specifically calls out a private meeting between Exxon
lobbyists andGOPstate prosecutors that took place in July in
Colorado at a Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA)
summit. (You can also listen toaudio and read a transcript from the
summit <http://www.exposedbycmd.org/RAGA-Exxon>.)....At this
meeting, lobbyist Myron Ebell
<http://www.desmogblog.com/myron-ebell>of the Exxon-funded
Competitive Enterprise Institute andTrump campaign energy adviser
<http://www.desmogblog.com/2016/09/27/climate-science-denialist-myron-ebell-named-trump-adviser> pushed
the attorneys general to help halt the “climate inquisition”
against Exxon.
10 Places to Visit Before They're Lost to*Climate Change*
<http://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/10-places-to-visit-before-theyre-lost-to-climate-change>
Condé Nast Traveler -Sep 30, 2016
As ice caps melt and wildfires rage, scientific assertions
that*climate change*is occurring at a rate faster than formerly
expected have become manifest in locales around the world.
*Exxon's Big Bet on Oil Sands a Heavy Weight To Carry*
<https://insideclimatenews.org/news/29092016/exxon-mobil-change-change-investigation-oil-sands-tar-sands-alberta-canada-sec?utm_source=Inside+Climate+News&utm_campaign=628cf8201b-Weekly_Newsletter_week_of_9_189_23_2016>
Tar sands account for 35 percent of Exxon's liquid holdings, up from
17 percent a decade ago, and may come under scrutiny in the SEC's
probe of its reserve accounting. ...State and federal investigators
are zeroing in on ExxonMobil's accounting practices as part of two
independent probes, asking whether the energy giant might have
misled investors about the value of its assets....Increasingly,
those assets are made up of Canadian tar sands oil, among the
world's most expensive and dirtiest forms of crude oil.....An
InsideClimate News analysis of the company's financial disclosures
shows that Exxon's oil sands reserves grew dramatically over the
past decade. Doing so has deepened the company's dependence on an
oil source that some economists say should be one of the first to be
abandoned if governments decide to leave much of the world's fossil
fuels in the ground to stave off global warming.
*Greenland rises as ice sheet melts faster
<http://climatenewsnetwork.net/greenland-rises-ice-sheet-melts/>*
New research shows that Greenland has been losing billions more
tonnes of ice than thought – and gaining height as bedrock rises
under less weight...As the biggest lump of ice in the northern
hemisphere melts ever more swiftly, so the bedrock of the enormous
island is rising in response to this weight loss at rates of up to
12mm a year...And since scientists have been using surface altitude
measurements to calculate melting rates, this means that the island
must have been shedding ice at a greater rate than anybody thought..
. Geodetic measurements reveal similarities between post–Last
Glacial Maximum and present-day mass loss from the Greenland ice
sheet <http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/2/9/e1600931>
*Patterns of Greenland ice loss similar to 20 thousand years ago
<http://www.alphagalileo.org/PrintView.aspx?ItemId=168029&CultureCode=en>*
A new study based on GPS measurements of the Earth's crust
suggests that previous calculations of past and present-day mass
loss in the Greenland Ice Sheet may have been underestimated....The
latest observations, reported in the journal Science Advances today,
reveal that the entirety of Greenland is rising in response to a
combination of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (that is the rise of
land due to ice mass loss over the last ~23 thousands years) and the
Earth's immediate elastic response to present-day ice-mass
loss...."It seems likely, therefore, that further destabilization of
these ice sheet regions will continue to be the source of
Greenland's contribution to sea-level rise in the future."
A Curious Plan to Fight*Climate Change*: Buy Mines, Sell Coal
<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/02/business/energy-environment/a-curious-plan-to-fight-climate-change-buy-mines-sell-coal.html>
New York Times -15 hours ago
He has come up with a model, he said, for how the industry can keep
producing coal, while reducing its impact on the*climate*. The plan
involves creating pollution credits by planting or preserving trees
around the world to offset the carbon emittedfrom burning coal. ..
For every ton of coal he sells, Mr. Clarke attaches some of the
credits. *...Demand for metallurgical coal — which is used for
making steel — has roared back in recent months. One of the
companies he founded with a longtime coal executive, ERP Compliant
Fuels, is now one of the largest producers of metallurgical coal in
North America...As part of the deal *...* the coal miners’ union
invested $10 million and took a 20 percent stake in the Federal
mine, which Mr. Clarke says he is doing everything he can to keep
open even though it doesn’t break even.*
Climate Change And The Astrobiology Of The Anthropocene : 13.7 ...

You can't solve a problem until you understand it. When it comes to
climate change, on a fundamental level we don't really understand
the problem....the part of climate change we've failed to culturally
metabolize is the meaning of what's happening to us and the
planet.....understanding life in its planetary context...our urgent
questions about sustainability are a subset of questions about
habitability. The key point, here, is the planets in our own solar
system, like Mars, show us that habitability is not forever. It will
likely be a moving target over time. The same idea is likely true
for sustainability — and we are going to need a plan for that..We're
not a plague on the planet. Instead, we are simply another thing the
Earth has done in its long history. We're an "expression of the
planet,"....climate change and the sustainability crises may best be
seen as our "final exam"
