The broadcast networks' evening news programs did not address
*climate change*in their coverage of Hurricane Matthew, even when
they reported on an event where Democratic presidential candidate
Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore explainedthe role
that climate change played in worsening the storm's damage. USA
Today also ignored the climate context of the storm, while other
major newspapers covered it briefly in their print editions, and
some published more extensive articles on their websites.*..*

Trump has tweeted that*global warming*is a hoax, while fellow
Republican Jim Inhofe produced a snowball in Congress last year,
claiming it disproved*global warming*. Ben Carson, a republican
presidential hopeful ...called the*climate* change debate
"irrelevant." Amid a contentious presidential race, U.S. president
Barack Obama called out political rivals that seek to cut scientific
funding on Thursday. "That's why I get so riled up when I see
people willfully ignore facts," Obama said from The White House
Frontiers conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "Or stick their
heads in the sand about basic scientific consensus. It's not just
that that position leads to bad policy. It's also that it undermines
the very thing that has always made America the engine for
innovation around the world."...Energy policy has been key in the
presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, after an
audience member at a recent town hall became an internet sensation
with his question on energy policy

He said planting trees, reducing greenhouse gasses as much as
possible and using green space to capture stormwater are solutions.
"We can bend the arc so that*climate*changes aren't as horrible as
they might be," he said..... By the end of this century, Chicago
could be dealing with three times as many 90-plus-degree days, if
not more.....That's according to data from the United States
Geological Survey Center for Integrated Data Statistics Downscaled
Climate Data Portal, which predicts how Global Warming will affect
    future temperatures....

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey investigate whether the

To the editor: The denial of human-caused*climate*isn't so bad until
you find yourself paying for destroyed public infrastructure and
ruined private property or experiencing lost lives...The number of
multibillion-dollar weather disasters keeps on going up. Expect to
pay more for insurance and to lose economic opportunities as our
government will increasingly have to help pay for these disasters.
It is time to live sustainably on this planet, and it is past time
for our country to be the world’s leader on this issue...Remember
the profound change in technology, industrial production and labor
that our country experienced during World War II. We can do it. We
can leave a sustainable economy and environment behind for our
children and grandchildren to inherit. .

*This day in Climate History **October 14, 2013:* From D.R. Tucker

October 14, 2013: In an editorial, the Baltimore Sun declares:
    <http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2013-10-14/news/bs-ed-climate-20131014_1_ipcc-report-climate-change-intergovernmental-panel>
"The latest analysis produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC), compiled by hundreds of scientists and dozens
of authors from around the globe, shows that climate change is real,
it's largely caused by man, and it's the greatest environmental
threat we face....."That's not alarmism, it's reality. Of course,
know-nothing deniers will be as dismissive of the IPCC findings as
they've been of similar reports in the past. That the IPCC is under
the auspices of the United Nations will be used to stir up
nationalistic suspicions. That climate change policy is highly
inconvenient for the fossil fuel industries will cause the big coal
and oil companies to continue their disinformation
campaigns....."None of which changes the reality that climate change
poses a serious threat, and as the evidence mounts, it's actually
become easier to distinguish these basic changes in the ecosystem
from the normal ups and downs of weather. No one super storm or
drought or tornado is traceable to global warming, of course, but
the data are simply too overwhelming to ignore. Each of the last
three decades has proven successively warmer than the previous. Any
recent slowing of that trend or plateau, as the report notes, has
more to do with variables such as volcanic activity and the solar
cycle over the last five years than it does the build-up of
    greenhouse gases in the atmosphere."
