****Washington State's Carbon Tax Initiative Splits Greens

James Hansen on the Carbon Tax
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWq4TTI_DNw ...comparable blame
rests upon politicians of both political parties....Right-wing
collaboration with the fossil fuel industry is obvious, but
connivance of liberals is widespread....Once elected, our
representatives feel entitled to become part of an elite class. They
are intelligent people, who support political perspectives that
they think are good, but their personal well-being plays a big
role. ...Washington is broken. The system in Washington is rotten
to the core. Sophisticated bribery reigns.

****Magical Thinking Won't Stop Climate Change
<https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-10-26/magical-thinking-won-t-stop-climate-change>*

World leaders have started to generate some real optimism with their
efforts to address global climate change. What's troubling, though,
is how far we remain from getting carbon emissions under control --
and how much wishful thinking is still required to believe we can do
so....they rely heavily on the assumption that new technologies will
allow humans to start sucking carbon out of the atmosphere on a
grand scale, resulting in large net negative emissions sometime in
the second half of this century. This might happen, but we don't
know how to do it yet...To eliminate that much atmospheric carbon,
as geophysicist Andrew Skuce estimates, we would need an industry
roughly three times as big as the entire current fossil fuel
industry -- and we would need to create it fast, building something
like one new large plant to capture and store carbon every day for
the next 70 years. Does that sound likely?

    India's Air-Conditioning and*Climate Change*Quandary

An Indian migrant daily wage worker sleeping next to an air cooler
under a mosquito net on a steel box in New Delhi in May. Hot
temperatures were making life tough for millions of poor people
across north India....Air-conditioning is not just a luxury. It's a
critical adaptation tool in a warming world, with the ability to
save lives.....In our continuing research, my colleagues and I have
found that hot days in India have a strikingly big impact on
mortality. Specifically, the mortality effects of each additional
day in which the average temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit
are 25 times greater in India than in the United
States....Currently, India has roughly five of these days per year.
Without global climate policy, it is projected to have 75 such days
annually by the end of the century. It is apparent that high
temperatures are a risk to India today, and at the same time it is
vulnerable to climate change, underscoring the challenge the country
faces....The effect of very hot days on mortality in the United
States is so low in part because of the widespread use of
air-conditioning. A recent study I did with colleagues showed that
deaths as a result of these very hot days in the United States
declined by more than 80 percent from 1960 to 2004 — and it was the
adoption of air-conditioning that accounted for nearly the entire
decline....So we are in a difficult position: The very technology
that can help to protect people from climate change also accelerates
    the rate of climate change.

*New analysis shreds claim that Death Valley recorded Earth's highest

<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2016/10/25/new-analysis-shreds-claim-that-death-valley-recorded-earths-hottest-temperature-in-1913/>*

Death Valley, Calif., boasts that it is home to the highest
temperature ever recorded on Earth. In 1913, the temperature there
reportedly spiked to a blistering 134 degrees, a world record that
has been endorsed by the World Meteorological Organization.... But
an exhaustive analysis published Monday has determined the record is
not legitimate. The temperature reported was "essentially not
possible from a meteorological perspective,"... "The extreme
temperature of 134°F measured on July 10, 1913 did not correlate
with observations at other sites in the region on this date and
likewise for the entire period of the extreme temperature readings
reported from Greenland Ranch during the week of July 7-14, 1913,"
Reid notes....If the Death Valley reading from 1913 were also
invalidated, the location would still hold at least a share of the
record for the hottest temperature ever "reliably measured"
according to Christopher Burt, an expert on weather extremes who
featured Reid's analysis on his blog. On June 30, 2013, Death Valley
soared to 129.2 degrees. Burt says the only other location which has
posted a credible reading this hot is Mitribah, Kuwait, which also
hit 129.2 degrees on July 21 in the summer.

*Rapid submarine ice melting in the grounding zones of ice shelves in
West Antarctica <http://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms13243>*

Enhanced submarine ice-shelf melting strongly controls ice loss in
the Amundsen Sea embayment (ASE) of West Antarctica, but its
magnitude is not well known in the critical grounding zones of the
ASE's major glaciers. ...we directly quantify bottom ice losses
along tens of kilometres ... which buttress the rapidly changing
Smith, Pope and Kohler glaciers. Melting in the grounding zones is
found to be much higher than steady-state levels, removing 300–490 m
of solid ice between 2002 and 2009 beneath the retreating Smith
Glacier. ...The vigorous, unbalanced melting supports the hypothesis
that a significant increase in ocean heat influx into ASE
sub-ice-shelf cavities took place in the mid-2000s.
