Outdated FEMA Flood Maps Don't Account For*Climate Change*
<http://www.npr.org/2016/09/15/492260099/outdated-fema-flood-maps-dont-account-for-climate-change>

The floods that hit Louisiana last month were caused by rainfall
that was unlike anything seen there in centuries. Most of the
southern part of the state was drenched with up to two or three
inches in an hour..... those maps at FEMA, and says those in use now
don't take into account any rainfall changes that might have started
to take place because of climate change...."You had to ignore
climate change [in drawing the maps]," she says. "All of the mapping
had to be based on the existing conditions [at the time they were
drawn, or many years earlier]." Those conditions were rainfall and
flooding statistics from the past, she explains. Sometimes decades
in the past....Schaefer says local flood managers have begun to
suspect that "existing conditions" are changing. But, until
recently, anytime they came to Washington, D.C., looking for help to
deal with those changes, they had to mince their words...."They
[couldn't] even use the words 'climate change,' " she says. "They
call it a 'slow moving disaster,' which is sort of a code word for
climate change."...Over the past couple of years, FEMA has begun to
consider climate change in its flood analyses, Schaefer says. An
executive order from the White House now requires it, and the agency
is also proposing new operating procedures that require research
into the effects of climate change on flooding....But there's a
time-lag problem: FEMA only updates its insurance flood maps every
five years. Climate scientists fear that the weather may be changing
faster than that...They tested the influence of four different
parameters—phenology, harvest index, optimum temperature, and sowing
density—by running the model several times with different values for
each parameter...No matter the calibration strategy, all simulations
predicted that climate change will reduce future crop yield

A suite of simulations run with a spectrum of starting conditions
shows that climate change will reduce corn crop yield, although the
degree of reductions varies widely....Scientists can predict
how*climate change*will affect crop yields using computer models
calibrated according to past crop and harvest data....
How TPP threatens our progress on*climate change*

San Francisco Chronicle -15 hours ago
we know that human-induced climate change is making natural
disasters more frequent and more intense....So why are some in
Washington pushing hard for a policy that would make*climate
change*considerably worse? This fall, Congress is likely to vote on
the Trans-Pacific Partnership - an agreement among 12 nations along
the Pacific Rim.....As the consequences of climate change get
clearer, the case against the TPP gets stronger.
Americans are willing to pay to fight*climate change*

Just as long as it’s not a lot.....Turns out that when it comes to
fighting*climate change*, most Americans are willing to pay a little
more to get the job done...71 percent of the 1,096 adults surveyed
favor the government taking action on climate change. Of those
surveyed, 57 percent said they would be willing to pay an additional
fee on their monthly electricity bill to combat climate change..
House Republicans Are Trying to Blackball the*Climate*Investigation
into Exxon
<https://www.wired.com/2016/09/congress-investigating-right-investigate-climate-investigation/>
WIRED -2 hours ago
ONCE UPON A time, climate science and politics were separate things.
Then came several decades of scientific denial, distortion, and
gaslighting. One of the companies responsible for politicizing
climate change is ExxonMobil, which for years funded climate change
denial groups despite its own research confirming that greenhouse
gases cause global warming. Now, the battle to hold them accountable
has become a proxy war between a lead denier in the US House of
Representatives and groups that are working to make Exxon legally
responsible for its actions....Some of this is political theater.
Yesterday, Texas Republican Lamar Smith, chairman of the House
Science Committee, heard arguments from a panel of experts—two of
whom work for Exxon-funded think tanks—on why his committee has the
authority to intervene in the investigations into Exxon’s denialism.
But if this is theater, it is not over once the curtain closes.
Displays like this further confuse the public about how science is
done. And it drags out the spurious narrative that science isn’t in
consensus about climate change, its causes, and effects. That
affects everyone living on this warming planet.....First: a little
background. Last year, Inside Climate News published a massive
exposé detailing how Exxon had suppressed its own science—among the
first to confirm that greenhouse gas emissions would lead to climate
change—in order to promote an anticlimate agenda. This prompted many
state attorneys general to open investigations as to whether Exxon’s
knowing denial of climate science defrauded its investors.....One of
the companies responsible for politicizing*climate change*is
ExxonMobil, which for years funded*climate change*denial groups
despite its own research confirming that greenhouse gases
cause*global warming*. Now, the battle to hold them
accountable*...It also sends a signal to the public that science is
an ideologically-driven process, like politics. And while climate
science may be irrevocably political, the place to fight out
scientific disagreements is in the peer reviewed literature, not a
stacked hearing. What Smith is doing is throwing the whole process
of science into doubt. Or maybe not the whole process, just process
as it pertains to any branch of science that doesn’t comport to his
political beliefs. Science is never solved in the courts.*
*Climate change*isn't a Chinese conspiracy > The starting point is
that heat makes people irritable.

One of Donald Trump's 100 wackiest ideas is that*climate change*is a
hoax fabricated by China to harm the United States....perhaps more
startling, rising temperatures seem to cause more violence...“The
relationship is really clear,” said Edward Miguel, an economist at
the University of California, Berkeley, who has studied the issue.
“Extremes in climate lead to more violence, more killing, more war,
more land riots in Brazil, more sectarian violence in India. It’s
pretty stunning how the relationship between climate and violence
holds across the globe.”...The starting point is that heat makes
people irritable....On hot days, property crimes aren’t more common,
but murders go up with the temperature. Likewise, researchers find
that police officers are more likely to draw and fire their weapons
during a training session conducted on a hot day....It appears that
2016 will be the hottest year in recorded history, and each of the
first six months of this year set a record as the hottest ever — the
hottest January, the hottest February, and so on. Fundamentally, we
are creating a hotter world for which we humans are poorly
adapted....So it’s time for Trump — and all Americans — to
re-evaluate. Climate change isn’t a hoax, and it certainly isn’t a
Chinese conspiracy. Unless we act, we’re cooked!
