*Global warming*making Calif.*wildfire*season longer, more severe
    <http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2016/09/14/global-warming-making-calif-wildfire-season-longer-more-severe/90364040/>

"We're moving to a different kind of landscape shaped by the
changing*climate*," said LeRoy Westerling, a fire ecologist from the
University of California, Merced who has studied the link
between*climate change*and wildfires. "What would be
surprising*...California just suffered through its hottest summer on
record: The Golden State's average temperature from June through
August was more than 3 degrees above the 20th century average,
according to scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. Globally, July and August 2016 tied for Earth's
hottest month on record, according to NASA. Last year was the
planet's hottest since reliable record-keeping began in 1880, and
2016 is virtually guaranteed to break that record because it's been
so warm thus far, scientists say.*...*Global warming has had a
profound impact on wildfire activity in the Western United States
over the last few decades, according to several recent studies. And
with more warming all but inevitable due to the climate-altering
greenhouse gases humans have already put into the atmosphere,
California and other Western states are likely to face
ever-more-dangerous fire conditions going forward...."When spring
temperatures are high, snow melts faster, soils dry out, plants get
into a more drought-stressed condition, and they can probably start
burning earlier," Falk said. "We can have a longer fire season then,
which means it's easier to have fires that will burn over larger
areas, because they'll have more time to do so."*

Prepare your portfolio for*climate change*: BlackRock
    <http://www.cnbc.com/2016/09/14/its-time-to-prepare-your-portfolio-for-climate-change-blackrock.html>

CNBC -‎11 hours ago‎

Investors need to start thinking about how*climate change*will
impact their portfolios, according to a new report from BlackRock,
which goes on to suggest several specific methods for investing
around*global warming*. "We believe all investors
should ...Interestingly, BlackRock found that one can reduce a
portfolio's "carbon footprint" by 70 percent while keeping the
tracking error to the MSCI World Index benchmark within 0.3 percent.
This suggests that avoiding most high carbon emitters can be done
    without fundamentally changing a portfolio's risk-reward
characteristics....Regulation, incidentally, is where the short-term
and the long-term meet when it comes to climate changes. This makes
sense, given that well-designed regulations bring a company's
short-term incentives in line with society's long-term goals.

Fireflies are such a delight that they are the official insects of

*Climate Science*'Skeptic' Smith Claims to Aid Scientists in Latest
    Crusade <https://www.texasobserver.org/lamar-smith-hearing-oversight/>

The Texas Observer -‎6 hours ago‎

In the latest installment of an increasingly contentious battle over
ExxonMobil's*climate change*record, Texas Congressman Lamar Smith
sought to justify the House Committee on Science's authority to
investigate state attorneys general and environmental*...The
committee took up the ongoing disagreement between Exxon and its
Republican allies in the House, and Democratic attorneys general who
want to prosecute the company for fraud. At the heart of the
disagreement: Whether Exxon understood the effects of fossil fuels
on climate change decades ago but decided to withhold that
information from the public and its shareholders....Tipped off by
the release of internal memos from Exxon’s climate scientists
warning about the effects of global warming in the 1970s and 1980s,
attorneys general from New York and Massachusetts subpoenaed the oil
and gas giant. Backed by House members and Republican attorneys
general, including Ken Paxton, Exxon has fought the allegations,
arguing that the investigations are an infringement on the company’s
    free speech.*
    Crimes and Misdemeanors: Part III
    <http://washingtonmonthly.com/2016/09/03/crimes-and-misdemeanors-part-iii/>
"Back in April, I suggested that Rep. Lamar Smith’s (R-TX)
harassment of climate scientists should become a focus of discussion
in the 2016 presidential election. Smith’s abuse of his position as
head of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and
his attempts to destroy the lives of those who have tried to raise
awareness of the climate crisis, exemplify the repugnance of the
Republican-controlled Congress; the Texas twerp has, of course,
endorsed Trump, with whom he shares the view that human-caused
    climate change is a hoax."
