Trump's*climate science*denial clashes with reality of rising seas
in Florida

Los Angeles Times -10 hours ago
By Donald Trump's account, scientists have tricked Americans into
accepting that *global warming*is caused by the burning of fossil
fuels...The Republican nominee wants to withdraw the United States
from the Paris climate pact, a nearly worldwide agreement to reduce
the carbon emissions that cause global warming...He has called for
scrapping Obama administration rules that cut carbon pollution from
coal-fired power plants.
*Chevron PR Firm's Local "News" Site Draws Attention from Koch
Industries, Alarm from Media Watchdogs

In the city of Richmond, California, Chevron Corp. not only
processes up to 250,000 barrels of crude oil a day from the largest
refinery on the West Coast — it also writes the news....The Richmond
Standard, an online paper focused on local news for the roughly
100,000 residents of this San Francisco Bay area city (neighboring
Berkeley and Oakland), is produced entirely by Chevron's public
relations firm....The Standard mostly prints local-interest stories:
announcing library construction, highlighting missing persons, and
profiling area businesses....But unlike a traditional newspaper, the
Standard also runs a dedicated section called "Chevron Speaks" —
used to introduce friendly Chevron reps, attack investigative
reporting projects, and talk electoral politics. And unlike other
media outlets, the Standard consistently lacks mention of industrial
accidents and problems at the refinery....Since the Standard was
first launched in 2013, the paper has grown dramatically in
readership and its successes are now garnering attention from other
fossil fuel companies — and alarm from media experts including Noam
Chomsky, the prominent political observer, activist, and professor
emeritus of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology....Unlike traditional newspapers, there's no firewall
between editors and owners at the Richmond Standard or commitment to
editorial independence. In fact, the Standard's entire newsroom
consists of Mike Aldax — an account executive at Singer Associates,
Chevron's PR firm — who serves as both reporter and editor...."If
you're looking for criticism of Chevron you're not going to find it
in the Richmond Standard,"
Trudeau adopts Harper's*climate*targets
<http://www.torontosun.com/2016/09/18/trudeau-adopts-harpers-climate-targets>
Toronto Sun -2 hours ago
Federal*Climate Change*Minister Catherine McKenna finally admitted
the painfully obvious on Sunday. She acknowledged the Trudeau
Liberals are not going to toughen Stephen Harper's targets for
reducing industrial*greenhouse gas*(GHG) emissions linked to climate
change....This means that after years spent in opposition attacking
as inadequate Harper's targets of lowering GHG emissions to 17%
below 2005 levels by 2020, and to 30% by 2030, the Liberals are
adopting them....McKenna blamed the Harper government for doing
nothing to implement its targets for the 10 years it was in power,
describing them as "fake."..In the real world, when it comes to fake
targets on climate change, the Liberals are the masters....They've
been faking it for almost a quarter century....In the real world,
ratifying the Paris treaty means nothing....It contains no binding
targets for reducing global GHG emissions and no timelines,
deadlines or penalties for failure to comply.

*Climate*Central's groundbreaking series Pulp Fiction was honored by
the Online News Association with its annual award for explanatory
journalism at its national convention on Saturday....cutting down
old trees to fuel power plants — a scenario that's already playing
out in the Southeast, where many of Europe's wood pellets are being
produced — will exacerbate climate change, the very problem for
which wood energy is often pitched as a solution. "There need to be
some rules and regulations put into place that trace the origin of
biomass, so you can't go out and cut an old-growth forest and
pelletize it and say, 'That's carbon neutral,'" he said

(unpaid commercial content) One of the most maddening sides of
modern life is that the media always under-reports the crucial
stories, while hyping nonsense. We could get enraged and pious; but
we're better off understanding how human nature works. Getting stern
isn't going to help. If you like our films, take a look at our shop
