    A weakening*La Nina*adds a lot of uncertainty to*climate*
    predictions

*Climate*prediction is always a matter of probabilities, and there
is always a fair share of uncertainty. But a big change like an*El
Nino*or a*La Nina*bears certain kinds of effects with enough
reliability that forecasters have more confidence in
their*predictions at those times... it shows that if there is a La
Nina at all, it only meets the criteria by the slimmest of margins.
The sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean are low
enough to be considered La Nina — 0.5 degrees below normal. But the
trade winds across the ocean are not as strong as NOAA expects them
to be during a La Nina, for example....*"*When there is a stronger
event, everyone agrees about it,*"* Barnston said. *"*It is when we
have very weak or borderline ones like this that we have these
    differences in diagnostic procedures.*"**

Earth Could Reach Critical*Climate*Threshold in Decade, Scientists
    Warn

Speaking at a University of Oxford conference this week, led by
leading U.K.*climate*researcher Richard Betts, scientists said
global*greenhouse gas*emissions are not likely to slow down quickly
enough to avoid passing the 1.5°C target. ...Meanwhile, new research
discovers soil may not be trapping carbon as fast as we
hoped....*.Yet more bad news also emerged Thursday as a new study
published in the journal Science found that the Earth is soaking up
carbon at a far slower rate than previously estimated—which could
mean a massive setback for environmental efforts....Once considered
a vital weapon in the fight against climate change, the soil, which
traps carbon that would ordinarily be released into the atmosphere,
has now been found to take a much longer time to absorb carbon than
scientists believed—which means its potential for carbon
sequestration this century *"*may only be half of what we thought it
    was,*"* the Washington Post explains.*

*(editorial) Clinton, Trump both come up cold on climate change - Boston
Globe

WHEN 22ND-CENTURY historians look back on 2016, they'll marvel at
how little attention the current presidential campaign paid to
developments like these...It's disconcerting that Trump has called
climate change a "hoax." Given his propensity to contradict his own
provocative statements, it's perhaps even more worrisome that his
small, hastily assembled team of environmental policy advisers is
stocked with other climate-change deniers, and Trump is reportedly
considering fracking billionaire Harold Hamm as his choice for
secretary of energy. Clinton has far surpassed this admittedly low
bar, encouragingly identifying goals like achieving an 80 percent
reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (from 2005 levels) by 2050 and
boosting renewable energy production....Yet Clinton's advisers have
concluded they're better off playing it cool and waiting for a
volatile opponent to self-destruct. As things stand, no candidate
will enter the White House next year having summoned public support
for a strategy to combat climate change....This campaign has raised
bigger questions than most — about economic anxieties in an
unforgiving economy, about racial politics amid demographic flux,
about the meaning of conservatism and the future of one of the two
major parties. But those issues crowded out discussion of a profound
threat that, as a hot summer wore on, suddenly didn't look so far off.

Canada's Founding Myths Hold Us Back from Addressing*Climate Change*

Debate moderators say*climate*questions don't make good TV

But when neither candidate mentioned*global warming*, Crowley
quickly moved on.*Climate*hawks squawked with outrage. "Where
is*global warming*in this debate?" tweeted former Vice President Al
Gore. "*Climate change*is an urgent foreign policy issue.....That is
really malfeasance on the part of our fourth estate," says Shawn
Otto, a cofounder of ScienceDebate, which pushes for more discussion
of scientific issues from candidates...Because so few moderators
have chosen to ask about climate over the years, Grist turned the
tables and asked moderators to answer for themselves. Most declined,
including Crowley, but those who spoke up said a good debate
question includes two elements:...It exposes differences for
undecided voters....It makes for dramatic TV....Environmentalists
say the focus on other issues is an industry problem. "The media
themselves think of climate change as an environmental issue, and
they have niche reporters on it," says Vicki Arroyo, executive
director of the Georgetown Climate Center. "They're not the
    reporters who moderate debates
