Memo to debate moderators: Ask questions about*climate change*this
time. A lot is riding on it.

Donald Trump believes climate science is a hoax perpetrated by the
Chinese to rob America blind, and he vows to try to pull the United
States out of the Paris climate accord immediately upon being
elected president....As was widely noted at the time, the 2012
presidential debates featured zero discussion of climate change. But
now, a confluence of new circumstances makes it substantially more
pressing that the debate moderators and the candidates do discuss
these issues this time around....For one thing, the positions of the
presidential candidates on climate issues could have vastly more
real world significance than they might have four years ago. Take
the Paris accord. It’s not clear yet whether Trump could succeed in
withdrawing the U.S. from the deal in the short term, but even if he
didn’t, there are other ways that Trump could frustrate its
progress, simply by refusing to participate in international
meetings about it or by refusing to submit reports documenting U.S.
contributions to it.....*climate is an area where the stakes are
enormously high and where there are very dramatic differences
between Trump and Clinton.* Trump calls climate change a "hoax."
Clinton calls it the "defining challenge of our time." As Time
magazine recently put it:
*Climate change: Is your opinion informed by science? Take our quiz!

Climate change has become a politically-charged, divisive issue, but
the underlying science is relatively simple and has been around for
more than 150 years. Do you know what causes global warming?

The World Agreed to Tackle*Climate Change*, But What Comes Next?

Optimists will tell you that the agreement is a turning point in the
fight against*climate change*. From the U.S. and Germany to China
and Senegal, countries came together and agreed that*climate
change*was a threat and that action needs to be taken*...*
*Global warming*may mean fewer Maine lobsters, says study
<http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2016/0924/Global-warming-may-mean-fewer-Maine-lobsters-says-study>
Christian Science Monitor -1 hour ago
PORTLAND, MAINE — Baby lobsters might not be able to survive in the
ocean's waters if the ocean continues to warm at the expected
rate....Scientists found that lobster larvae struggled to survive
when water temperatures rose 5 degrees F. warmer than current
temperatures in the Gulf of Maine, a key lobster fishing area off of
New England... The lobster catch south of Cape Cod fell to about 3.3
million pounds in 2013, 16 years have it peaked at about 22 million
in 1997...The authors said the study is the first of its kind to
focus on how American lobsters will be impacted by warming waters
and the increasing acidification of the ocean in tandem. The study
found that acidification had almost no effect on young lobsters'
survival, Waller said.
What*Climate Change*Has to Do with Earthquakes, Volcanoes and
Tsunamis

Insurance Journal -Sep 22, 2016
If that isn't enough to enflame the smoldering embers of discourse
within those ready to pounce on any and all*climate change*notions
they deem absurd, here's another assertion:*climate change*will also
lead to more volcanic activity and tsunamis. *...****.*"*We know
that at the end of the last Ice Age, as the great glaciers
disappeared, the release in pressure allowed the crust beneath to
bounce back. At the same time, staggering volumes of melt water
poured into the ocean basins, warping and bending the crust around
their margins. The resulting tossing and turning provoked a huge
resurgence in volcanic activity, seismic shocks, and monstrous
landslides—the last both above the waves and below.*"*...The science
behind all of this goes beyond a simple equation – less ice equals
less weight on the Earth’s crust – so if you want to read more on
that I’d suggest a 2010 paper in the Royal Society....In an
interview conducted by email with the professor – done that way to
deal with an eight-hour time difference and scheduling conflicts –
he emphasized that these are not his theories alone and that
*"*climate change is already promoting a response from the solid
Earth, with increased earthquake activity in southern Alaska in
response to the removal of more than 1 km of ice from underlying
faults.*"**
With a catastrophic season of wildfires, megafloods and major
hurricanes, the*climate-change*siege is fully upon us

RollingStone.com -Sep 22, 2016
The science connecting wildfire to*global warming*is unequivocal. A
2016 report from the National Academy of Sciences states plainly,
"An increase in fire risk in California is attributable to*climate
change*." If emissions continue unchecked, an*...*
*The Price Tag of Being Young: Climate Change and Millennials’ Economic
Future <https://nextgenclimate.org/vote-future-depends/>*
NextGen Climate and Demos released a report called The Price Tag of
Being Young: Climate Change and Millennials’ Economic Future
<http://nextgenclimate.org/price_tag_report/>, which quantifies the
costs of climate change to the millennial generation and their
children. According to this new study, the costs will be
enormous....For the children of millennials, the losses from climate
change will be drastically greater.
*The New York Times is looking for a climate change editor
<http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/jobs/nyt-climate-change-editor.html>*
The New York Times is a leader in covering climate change. .....and is
ramping up its coverage to make the most important story in the world
even more relevant, urgent and accessible to a huge audience around the
globe. ...We are looking for an editor to lead this dynamic new group.
We want someone with an entrepreneurial streak who is obsessed with
finding new ways to connect with readers and new ways to tell this vital
