*Climate change*is a refugee issue too

..According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 60 million people
worldwide are currently displaced, with 54 percent of the world's 21
million refugees coming from just three countries: Syria,
Afghanistan and Somalia...To its credit, the New York Declaration
for Refugees and Migrants that UN member states agreed to this week
acknowledges that*climate change*is a factor forcing people from
their homes. Yet, at ... Experts estimate that by 2050, between 50
million and 200 million people could be displaced because of climate
change. But while that seems far off, climate displacement isn't
something out of a science fiction movie. It's happening
today....Now that the Obama administration is taking the lead on
both issues, climate and refugees, it's Congress's turn to act. And
when it does, Congress needs to take these facts into consideration
when it debates the refugee issue and considers how it will allocate
funding.

**What's happening beneath Greenland?
A new study on the Greenland Ice Sheet provides valuable insight on
climate change, using unique research methods to establish new
estimates of ice loss for both modern and ancient times,....YouTube
visualization <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMNo61aQhgY>... the
ice sheet sits on the Earth's solid crust, which is in turn perched
atop a softer layer of rock called the mantle. When the ice sheet
loses ice, the crust underneath rises up — similar to the way in
which a compressed spring will bounce up when pressure is
removed....This uplift, called postglacial rebound, means that
scientists can't measure how much an ice sheet is shrinking by
simply tracking changes in its surface elevation. They also must
figure out how much of that elevation change is caused by the
bedrock rising../..

Terns Flee Warming Temps in Epic Migration to Alaska | Climate ...
<http://www.climatecentral.org/news/terns-flee-warming-epic-migration-north-20727>
Climate Central -10 hours ago
Researchers in Alaska startled to discover Caspian terns 1000 miles
further north than species had been previously recorded....“To be
1,000 miles further north attests to how much the globe has warmed,”
said Terry Root, a biologist and senior fellow at Stanford
University. “Birds follow their physiology, nothing else. If they
think they should move, they move. Alaska has warmed so much that it
is causing havoc to a lot of nature.”...While most species aren't
able to move as far as terns, scientists are noticing shifts across
Alaska. Moose and beavers have moved north of the Brooks Range and
onto the Arctic plain, which increasingly offers suitable vegetation
as the region warms up and greens.... The landscape is changing and
so are its residents.

Japanese interest in*climate change*falters, especially among young:
survey
<http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2016/09/25/national/science-health/japanese-interest-climate-change-falters-especially-among-young-survey/>
The Japan Times -6 hours ago
Japanese people are less interested in*climate change*now than nine
years ago, a government survey has shown. The proportion of
respondents who said they are interested in*climate change*fell to
87.2 percent, down about 5 points from the previous*...The level of
interest was lowest among people between the ages of 18 and 29, with
74.7 percent showing interest. The highest was marked by those in
their 40s, at 91.9 percent, according to the results of the poll
released Saturday....The survey also showed that only 28.1 percent
knew about the government*'*s “Cool Choice” campaign aimed at
encouraging consumers to buy energy-saving appliances.*
*Open Letter Regarding Climate Change From Concerned Members of the U.S.
National Academy of Sciences <http://responsiblescientists.org/>*
Human-caused climate change is not a belief, a hoax, or a
conspiracy. It is a physical reality. Fossil fuels powered the
Industrial Revolution. But the burning of oil, coal, and gas also
caused most of the historical increase in atmospheric levels of
heat-trapping greenhouse gases. This increase in greenhouse gases is
changing Earth's climate.....From studies of changes in temperature
and sea level over the last million years, we know that the climate
system has tipping points. Our proximity to these tipping points is
uncertain. We know, however, that rapid warming of the planet
increases the risk of crossing climatic points of no return,
possibly setting in motion large-scale ocean circulation changes,
the loss of major ice sheets, and species extinctions. The climatic
consequences of exceeding such thresholds are not confined to the
next one or two electoral cycles. They have lifetimes of many
thousands of years....The political system also has tipping points.
...The United States can and must be a major player in developing
innovative solutions to the problem of reducing emissions of
greenhouse gases.
