*Jet streams stumble as the world warms

By Tim Radford, LONDON, 9 April, 2017
The warming of the atmosphere by greenhouse gases is slowing the jet
streams which drive the northern hemisphere's weather.
Researchers have once again linked a sequence of devastating climate
events to global warming fuelled by prodigal human use of fossil fuels.
And this time, they believe they have identified the agency behind
theblazing summers that have claimed lives and destroyed livelihoods
repeatedly
<https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2017-03/pifc-weh032317.php>
during this century.
They argue in the journal Scientific Reports
<http://www.nature.com/articles/srep45242> that human impact on the
climate now reaches high into the stratosphere,to influence the
behaviour patterns of the giant jet streams
<https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2017-03/ps-ewe032117.php> that
carry heat and moisture around the northern hemisphere, and keep the
weather on the move.
Warming driven by carbon dioxide emissions from car exhausts and power
stations, they argue, tends to make these giant oscillating waves stall
in their journey around the hemisphere - to create enduring episodes of
high and low pressure and lingering hazards of drought and flood.
"The unprecedented 2016 California drought, the 2011 US heatwave and
2010 Pakistan flood as well as the 2003 European hot spell all belong to
a most worrying series of extremes," says Michael Mann from Pennsylvania
State University in the US.

Continuing to burn fossil fuels at the current rate could bring
atmospheric carbon dioxide to its highest concentration in 50 million
years, jumping from about 400 parts per million now to more than 900
parts per million by the end of this century, a new study warns.
And if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated beyond that point, the
climate could reach a warming state that hasn’t been seen in the past
420 million years.
Some research suggests that, if humans burned through all fossil fuels
on Earth, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations could hit 5,000
parts per million by the year 2400.

Plankton blooms in the Arctic’s increasing number of meltwater ponds are
enriching the ocean - but potentially accelerating global warming.
By Tim Radford LONDON, 7 April, 2017
Even in the white-out world of ice, the Arctic is growing greener.
Plankton blooms below the frozen ocean and in Greenland’s icy mountain
meltwater ponds become little ecosystems that will eventually enrich the
ocean.
And both entirely natural processes could be a measure of human impact
on the planetary climate. In each case, what happens a little could
increasingly happen a lot, to accelerate climate change still further.
The Arctic is the fastest-warming place on the planet. Green plants have
begun to invade the frozen landscapes, and Greenland’s ice is in
retreat. And scientists have begun to look in finer detail at the way
the process happens.
Twenty years ago, no more than 4% of Arctic ice was thin enough to
permit colonies of phytoplankton to bloom underneath. Now, in the summer
months, 30% of the iced-over ocean covers a garden of green things, to
be grazed by other forms of sea life.
"The metre decline in sea ice thickness in the Arctic in the past 30
years has dramatically changed the ecology in that area," Horvat says.

Even the smallest of symbolic details can't escape the changes of life
in Trump's America. The government agency responsible for overseeing a
staggering 258 million acres of land, including ecologically vital
conservation areas, has changed the image on its homepage from a scenic
park vista to a massive, tall pile of coal.
The website change, which happened in the past 24 hours, is in keeping
with the Trump administration's push to drill for oil, natural gas, and
minerals on public lands.
