The People's Climate March will descend on D.C. with an
intersectional coalition of green and environmental-justice groups,
indigenous and civil-rights organizations, students and labor
unions. The march will take place on Saturday, April 29, exactly 100
    days into Trump's presidency.

*Skagit Jury Refuses to Convict First "Valve-Turner", Vindicates Climate
Threat <http://www.shutitdown.today/press_release_february_1_2017>*

In a resounding recognition of the threat of climate change, a
Skagit County jury has refused to convict Ken Ward of two felony
counts stemming from an act of civil disobedience in October of last
year. After more than five hours of deliberation, Ward's three-day
trial ended in a hung jury, with at least one juror refusing to convict.
"In five hours, the jury was unable to decide that with all of the
evidence against me, including the video of me closing the valve,
that this was a crime. I didn't contest a single piece of the
evidence, only presented my story and evidence of catastrophic
climate change. This is a tremendous outcome.," said Ken Ward after
    the decision.

*Trump is copying the Bush censorship playbook. Scientists aren't
standing for it
<https://www.skepticalscience.com/trump-copying-bush-censorship-playbook-scientists-arent-standing-for-it.html>*

    By dana1981
As President George W. Bush said, "Fool me once, shame on ... shame
on you. Fool me ... You can't get fooled again!"... the Trump
Administration has copied the Bush scientific censorship playbook.
They issued de facto gag orders to government science agencies like
the EPA and USDA, ordered that the EPA take down its climate
webpage, and have mandated that any studies or data from EPA
scientists must undergo review by political appointees before they
can be released to the public...
However, the Trump Administration is quickly realizing that
scientists learned from the Bush scandal. This time around they're
not trying to appease the political appointees by staying quiet and
allowing the censorship to happen...But Trump has given scientists
    every reason to feel threatened...
For example, he appointed Myron Ebell to lead his EPA transition
team - an oil and coal-funded enemy of science who wants to gut the
agency. That team also included David Schnare and Chris Horner, who
have spent much of their careers harassing and intimidating climate
scientists. Here's what the transition team had to say about how the
    EPA currently uses science:..
EPA does not use science to guide regulatory policy as much as it
uses regulatory policy to steer the science ... EPA has greatly
    increased its science manipulation.

With cameras trained on him for more than six hours of questioning,
Rex Tillerson told Democratic senators on the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee many of the things they wanted to hear when it
came to*climate change*. "*Climate change*does exist*...*
*In responses to written questions from at least two senators,
Tillerson questioned the consensus among climate scientists about
humanity*'*s role in warming the planet — including some scientists
who work for ExxonMobil, the company Tillerson ran for a decade. He
also doubled back spoken testimony that said the United States
should remain in the Paris climate accord.*
*Tillerson*'*s responses to these two senators, Ben Cardin of
Maryland and Jeff Merkley of Oregon, are not yet public but were
obtained by BuzzFeed News. The offices of both senators confirmed
that the answers to their questionnaires are real.*

Bay of Bengal: depleted fish stocks and huge dead zone signal tipping
point
<https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jan/31/bay-bengal-depleted-fish-stocks-pollution-climate-change-migration>

What is unfolding in the bay is a catastrophic convergence of flawed
policy, economic over-exploitation, unsustainable forms of waste
management, and climate change impacts that are intensifying in
unpredictable ways. The scientists who identified the bay's dead
zone warn that this stretch of ocean is approaching a tipping point
that will have serious consequences for the planet's oceans and the
    global nitrogen cycle...
Should the bay's fisheries collapse there will also be very serious
human consequences, including intensified conflict and mass
displacement. If millions of people lose their livelihoods then we
can be sure that the resultant churning of populations will create
huge new streams of migration, across the bay, the Indian Ocean, and
indeed, the planet. Recent refugee flows in the region suggest that
such a process may have already begun...
For these issues to be addressed there needs to be a sea change in
    governmental attitudes and policies.

*The hi-tech war on science fraud
<https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/feb/01/high-tech-war-on-science?CMP=share_btn_gp>*

The exposure of fraud directly threatens the special claim science
has on truth, which relies on the belief that its methods are purely
rational and objective. As the congressmen warned scientists during
the hearings, "each and every case of fraud serves to undermine the
public's trust in the research enterprise of our nation".
But three decades later, scientists still have only the most crude
estimates of how much fraud actually exists. The current accepted
standard is a 2009 study by the Stanford researcher Daniele Fanelli
that collated the results of 21 previous surveys given to scientists
in various fields about research misconduct. The studies, which
depended entirely on scientists honestly reporting their own
misconduct, concluded that about 2% of scientists had falsified data
at some point in their career.
If Fanelli's estimate is correct, it seems likely that thousands of
scientists are getting away with misconduct each year. Fraud –
including outright fabrication, plagiarism and self-plagiarism –
accounts for the majority of retracted scientific articles. ...
When scientists publish papers in journals, they release only the
data they wish to share. Critical evaluation of the results by other
scientists – peer review – takes place in secret and the discussion
is not released publicly. Once a paper is published, all comments,
concerns, and retractions must go through the editors of the journal
before they reach the public. There are good, or at least
defensible, arguments for all of this. But Hartgerink is part of an
increasingly vocal group that believes that the closed nature of
science, with authority resting in the hands of specific gatekeepers
    – journals, universities, and funders – is harmful, and that a more
open approach would better serve the scientific method.
