*Seawater dents delta rice production
<http://climatenewsnetwork.net/seawater-dents-delta-rice-production/>*

Saltwater intrusion exacerbated by climate change is hitting rice
production in vulnerable delta regions and threatens to cause food
    shortages.
LONDON, 4 February, 2017 – Urgent action is being called for to
prevent salt intrusion causing severe damage to rice production and
loss of drinking water in Bangladesh and Vietnam,
Sea level rise, combined with the floods and waterlogging caused by
cyclones and typhoons, is threatening large areas of land that is
    currently highly productive.
Unless counter measures are taken to stop the levels of salt rising
and to develop more salt-resistant strains of rice, then both
nations will increasingly struggle to feed their rising populations,
say the World Bank and the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy
    Research (NIBIO).
Their reports also say there will be mass migration away from the
    affected areas....
Saline levels in soils and irrigation waters in coastal areas are
steadily increasing,... "As of now, very few seed varieties on the
    market
are able to tolerate the high salt levels that farmers in these
regions are experiencing" By Paul Brown

*Why do Climate Deniers Hate Puppies?

Washington Post: The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday
abruptly removed inspection reports and other information from its
website about the treatment of animals at thousands of research
laboratories, zoos, dog breeding operations and other facilities.

In a statement, the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service cited court rulings and privacy laws for the decision, which
it said was the result of a "comprehensive review" that took place
over the past year. It said the removed documents, which also
included records of enforcement actions against violators of the
Animal Welfare Act and the Horse Protection Act, would now be
accessible only via Freedom of Information Act Requests. Those can
    take years to be approved.

"We remain equally committed to being transparent and responsive to
our stakeholders' informational needs, and maintaining the privacy
rights of individuals with whom we come in contact," the statement said.
It kind of makes sense, when you realize that animals of all kinds
will bear the harshest brunt of climate change.

*Global warming*skeptic Lamar Smith sets "Make EPA Great Again"
    hearing
    <https://www.texastribune.org/2017/02/02/lamar-smith-schedules-make-epa-great-again-hearing/>

Texas Tribune -‎Feb 2, 2017‎

.The hearing, titled "Make EPA Great Again," will be the first time
the committee has met since Trump took office and the 115th Congress
    convened.
.Invigorated by the new climate change-doubting presidential
administration, a Texas congressman known for his ardent denial
of*global warming*- and early support for President Donald Trump -
has scheduled a committee hearing next week "to examine the
Environmental Protection Agency's process for evaluating and using
science during its regulatory decision making activities." ...
In 2015, a group of Austin environmental activists presented Smith
an award, in absentia, from "Flat Earth Foundation of Texas" to
protest his efforts. Those efforts certainly weren't aided under the
Obama administration, which made fighting climate change one of its
    top priorities.
"EPA has long been on a path of regulatory overreach, and the
committee will use the tools necessary to put EPA back on track,"
the release said, noting the panel also will examine the "Social
Cost of Carbon," a measure EPA has used to calculate the climate
    impacts of various environmental regulations.

*Activists Say Posting 'Blatantly False' Climate Information On EPA
Website Is Illegal
<http://dailycaller.com/2017/02/03/activists-say-posting-blatantly-false-climate-information-on-epa-website-is-illegal/>*

Legal analysts think the 2001 Information Quality Act, signed into
law by former President George W. Bush, could become a weapon for
scientists and climate advocates worried President Donald Trump will
direct the agency to post information that conflicts with research
showing a link between human action and global warming.
"Posting blatantly false information on the EPA's website would
violate the Information Quality Act," Romany Webb, a climate law
fellow at Columbia University, told reporters Thursday. "The
guidelines clearly state that information disseminated to the
public, including via a website, must be substantively accurate."
The law allows people who object to information presented by a
federal agency to request a correction or to have it retracted. They
can appeal in a process overseen by an independent inspector general
(IG) if the agency denies their request.
The appeal process would be filtered through a panel of political
appointees – who will likely be named after the Senate confirms
Trump's EPA pick, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt. Arthur
Elkins, a former EPA lawyer appointed by Barack Obama in 2010, is
    the current EPA IG..
"We have discretionary authority to look at anything we think is
important and valuable to the agency's activities," Alan Larsen,
counsel to the Inspector General, told reporters. "If employees were
asked to do something improper … they could bring that to the IG's
    office."
Activists fear Trump, a climate change skeptic, could hurt what they
believe is the agency's mission: fight so-called man-made global
    warming.

Reporting on a National Journal poll that found that only 13 percent
of GOP members of Congress accept the evidence of man-made global
warming, Kevin Drum notes: "It's not just that Republican members of
Congress aren't convinced that global warming is a man-made problem
-- gotta keep those campaign donations from Exxon rolling in, after
all -- it's that the number who believe this has actually gone down
    over the past year."
