Sweden's new climate law sets long-term goals for greenhouse gas
reductions in the country. Notably, it will be legally binding for
    future governments as well.
The Swedish position may be at odds with the new U.S.
administration. President Trump has repeatedly expressed skepticism
in climate change science, even going as far as to label it a hoax
perpetrated by China. There is widespread speculation he may try to
pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement or simply fail to
participate in the key climate deal.

In 2013, when Beijing environmentalist Li Shuo suggested Chinese
policymakers take the lead on*climate change*, the reactions were
    less than enthusiastic..
Many believe China is changing course for its own good. “The biggest
driver is domestic concerns over smog,”
But many analysts also believe China hopes to translate its climate
actions into “soft power”, and Southeast Asia, in particular, is
where climate diplomacy is badly needed...

*'Watching with bated breath': Massive iceberg set to break off
Antarctic ice shelf
<http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2017/02/02/antarctica-larsen-c-ice-shelf-crack/97402418/>*

It could take days to years. But the iceberg is most likely to
break free within the next few months because of the overwhelming
weight the 110 miles of already separated ice is placing on the 12
miles that remains connected to the shelf, said Adrian Luckman of
Project MIDAS, a British Antarctic research project that's keeping
    watch on the ever-growing crack.
Ice shelves are permanent floating sheets of ice that connect to a
landmass, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
Studying them is important because they "hold back the glaciers that
'feed' them," Luckman said. "When they disappear, ice can flow
faster from the land to the ocean and contribute more quickly to
    sea-level rise."

*Climate advocates study industry lobby's playbook to fight Trump
<http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-epa-accuracy-idUSKBN15H2EC>*

    By Valerie Volcovici (Reuters)
Scientists may steal a page from the oil industry’s playbook to stop
President Donald Trump rewriting the U.S. position on climate
change, by relying on an obscure law meant to ensure federal
    agencies present accurate information...
*The 2001 Information Quality Act, *passed under Republican
President George W. Bush, has for years provided a way for companies
and their lobbyists to challenge federal agencies’ assumptions on
issues ranging from the threats posed by global warming to the
    health effects of petrochemicals...
Now, as Trump’s leadership seeks to get the Environmental Protection
Agency into line with the new administration’s more pro-business and
anti-regulation agenda, the act could become a tool for rebellious
scientists and climate advocates, legal experts said...
"Posting blatantly false information on the EPA's website would
violate the Information Quality Act," said Romany Webb, a climate
law fellow at Columbia University. "The guidelines clearly state
that information disseminated to the public, including via a
    website, must be substantively accurate."..
The Information Quality Act allows individuals who object to
information presented by a federal agency to request a correction.
If the agency denies the request, the individual can appeal in a
process overseen by an independent inspector general.

*'Beyond the extreme': Scientists marvel at 'increasingly non-natural'
Arctic warmth*

The Arctic is so warm and has been this warm for so long that
scientists are struggling to explain it and are in disbelief. The
climate of the Arctic is known to oscillate wildly, but scientists
say this warmth is so extreme that humans surely have their hands in
it and may well be changing how it operates.
Temperatures are far warmer than ever observed in modern records,
and sea ice extent keeps setting record lows.
2016 was the warmest year on record in the Arctic, and 2017 has
picked up right where it left off. "Arctic extreme (relative) warmth
    continues,
At the North Pole, the mercury has rocketed to near the melting
point twice since November, and another huge flux of warmth is
projected by models next week. Their simulations predict some places
in the high Arctic will rise over 50 degrees above normal.

*Drones changing how scientists monitor Arctic climate change
<http://www.nunatsiaqonline.ca/stories/article/65674drones_changing_how_scientists_monitor_arctic_climate_change/>*
*Geological Survey scientists say western Arctic erosion rapidly
accelerating*

Cliffs along the western Canadian Arctic coastline are eroding at an
increasingly rapid pace, threatening to impact animals, plants and
    people in the area.
But a team of scientists from the Geological Survey of Canada has
found a cheap and novel way to monitor the phenomenon: combining
off-the-shelf drones with 3D imagery that tracks erosion
    year-to-year without breaking the bank.
"It's magnitudes cheaper, maybe even ten times cheaper," coastal
geologist for the Geological Survey of Canada, Dustin Whalen, told
Nunatsiaq News, Dec. 16, comparing his do-it-yourself tech to more
expensive LIDAR imagery—or light detection and ranging, a remote
sensing method shot from an airplane.
Using a $1,500 drone you can purchase online from electronic stores,
the scientists confirmed that erosion is accelerating at a rapid
rate, even compared to data recorded 20 years ago.
That rate of coastal change has increased between 20 and 200 per
cent since 2000, Whalen and his team note in a report on their work.
That's especially true with cliffs larger than five metres in height
which are more susceptible to climate change and warming
    temperatures that destabilize load-bearing permafrost.
"Eighty-five per cent of the coastline is eroding in the western
Canadian Arctic. Of that, I think 65 per cent of the Arctic is
cliffs over five metres and our data has shown that all cliffs over
five metres are accelerating [in that area]," Whalen said.
Many of the cliffs in the region being studied by the Geological
Survey of Canada hang between 15 and 18 metres over the coastline.
"Some of these blocks coming off are the size of a three-storey home
and they're falling off every season."
