Leading candidate for Trump's science advisor calls*climate change*a
cult

Ars Technica -2 hours ago
In recent years, he has made*climate change*his primary cause,
staking out a position that's in stark disagreement with the
conclusions of those who actually study the climate.
But when it comes to the conclusions that scientists have drawn from
that monitoring, Happer maintained his implacable opposition. He
suggested we could double the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and
not see the temperature budge much and that the planet's history
supports this conclusion (it doesn't). He continued to say that
warmth and carbon dioxide would give agriculture a big boost (field
studies suggest otherwise): "I see the CO2 as good, you know," he
said. "Let me be clear: I don’t think it’s a problem at all, I think
it’s a good thing."
And then there's the trolling. Happer called climate science a
"cult" during The Scientist's interview, but he was only warming up.
By his next interview, he was ready to elaborate. “There’s a whole
area of climate so-called science that is really more like a cult,”
Happer told the Guardian. “It’s like Hare Krishna or something like
that. They’re glassy-eyed and they chant. It will potentially harm
the image of all science.”

*Global ocean de-oxygenation quantified
<https://phys.org/news/2017-02-global-ocean-de-oxygenation-quantified.html>*
Phys.Org ...just published the most comprehensive study on global
oxygen content in the world's oceans so far. It demonstrates that
the ocean's oxygen content has decreased by more than two percent
over the last 50 years. "Since large fishes in particular avoid or
do not survive in areas with low oxygen content, these changes can
have far-reaching biological consequences," says Dr. Schmidtko, the
lead-author of the study.
However, the oxygen supply in the oceans is threatened by global
warming in two ways: Warmer surface waters take up less oxygen than
colder ...

The Trump Presidency's Potential Impact On*Climate Change*

ProPublica senior reporter Andrew Revkin discusses President Trump's
possible cuts to the EPA, as well as the potential impact of pulling
out of the Paris*climate*accord. TERRY GROSS, HOST: This is FRESH
AIR. I'm Terry Gross. One of Donald Trump's...
So what is Will Happer's position on climate change?
REVKIN: Well, he thinks it's fantasy, fiction, a tendency toward
apocalyptic thinking on the part of environmentalists. And he thinks
some scientists have bought into that. Now, when I interviewed him,
it's so clear that his own beliefs about climate science are just
such an outlier. Just to cast him in context, he's convinced that
the warming from a build-up - doubled CO2 amount in the atmosphere,
he doesn't see any chance it'll be higher than 1 degree, which is -
you know, that would be completely manageable for humanity, say, by
2100. The range that the IPCC, this Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change, has come up with, that's been pretty robust for
decades, is from, like, 1 to 4 or so degrees, is the possible
warming from a doubled amount of this gas, CO2, in the air. And that
doubling could come - well, is almost sure to come late in this
century without dramatic changes in our energy patterns. So when he
says 1 degree is the worst it could be, that's a complete outlier.
And he's also talked about...

Trump's vow to scrap the Paris*climate change *accord faces
skepticism from corporations, GOP moderates

Trashing the Paris Agreement made for a great campaign prop at
Donald Trump's rallies, where the*climate change*accord was
portrayed as a product of the out-of-touch, insufferable elites that
Trump pledged to sweep from power...
Many Republican heavyweights are meanwhile sending a clear signal to
the White House that their dislike of the Clean Power Plan — the
Obama administration’s blueprint for meeting America’s obligations
under the climate pact — should not be confused with support for
Trump’s repudiation of all climate action.
A group of GOP gurus that includes former Secretaries of State James
A. Baker and George P. Shultz, former Secretary of the Treasury
Henry M. Paulson, and lead economic advisors for Ronald Reagan and
George W. Bush visited the White House last week to implore the
administration to approach climate policy the way it appears to be
dealing with Obamacare. Repealing the Obama climate plan and
replacing it with nothing, they warned, is a perilous path.

To be sure, this is only part of the problem. Scientists generally
agree that the increasingly likely effects of*global warming*-
everything from rising seas and extreme storms and droughts to the
spread of diseases and starvation - are, in fact.
As part of her work with the U.S. Geological Survey, Finzi Hart
visits parts of Southern California that are already flooding, from
Huntington Beach to Malibu, capturing images of ocean water creeping
into streets and waves crashing near buildings.
“Bringing that world to you, and letting you have that visceral
experience within your own office or living room, is a really big...
part of it,” Finzi Hart said.
“It’s about helping them understand there are actions you can take.”
Using a special device on loan from Google, a camera outfitted with
16 GoPro devices, she creates 360 degree videos that she uploads to
YouTube. Anyone with a smart phone can scan one of the many
neighborhoods she’s captured, including those in Long Beach, Redondo
Beach and Manhattan Beach. Using a $15 Google Cardboard device, the
scenes becomes even more realistic.
Filming the ways in which local communities are already being
changed is a way to illustrate that climate change is not a remote,
distant possibility.
The work, Finzi Hard added, isn’t fiction.
“It’s real. The future is happening right now.”
