New Evidence That the Atlantic Ocean's Big Current Is Unstable

*The Atlantic Ocean and an Actual Debate in Climate Science*...
Scientists have recently begun to re-examine a scary question: Will
a crucial ocean current shut down?
While scientists continue to explore the consequences of climate
change, there is essentially no debate among scientists about global
warming's “connection to the actions of mankind.” Nor has there been
a debate for years. Since at least 1995, the ...

The global conveyer belt is part of the large-scale ocean
circulation that is driven by differences in the density of the
waters. It plays a key role in keeping the climate at balance and
Europe warm. Global warming may change it forever with unforeseeable
consequences.

Overlooked possibility of a collapsed Atlantic Meridional
Overturning Circulation in warming climate
<http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/1/e1601666>
Observationally based freshwater budget analyses suggest that the
AMOC is in an unstable regime susceptible for large changes in
response to perturbations. ...the AMOC collapse brings about large,
markedly different climate responses: a prominent cooling over the
northern North Atlantic and neighboring areas, sea ice increases
over the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian seas and to the south of
Greenland, and a significant southward rain-belt migration over the
tropical Atlantic. Our results highlight the need to develop
dynamical metrics to constrain models and the importance of reducing
model biases in long-term climate projection.

Climate Change Might Make Birds Mis-Time Their Migrations ...

Bird species trace their migratory paths based on where they can
find the most resources, but changes to the climate might soon make
their knowledge outdated.
(BBC) Brixton Road breaches annual air pollution limit in five days
<http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-38529928>
In the UK it is estimated that the air pollution that we breathe
causes an estimated 40,000 early deaths per year.
Legal limits were set in 1999 to protect our health, with a deadline
to meet them by 2010. Now, in 2017, they have been breached in the
first five days of the year.A south London road has breached its
annual air pollution limit for 2017 in just five days.
Readings taken in Brixton Road found levels of nitrogen dioxide
(NO2), linked to nearly 5,900 early deaths a year, repeatedly
breached the EU limit.
King's College London, which runs the air quality monitoring
stations, said similar pollution problems are found along many of
London's main roads.
Oxford Street, Kings Road and the Strand are other pollution hotspots.
Under EU law the average hourly level of NO2, mostly caused by
diesel vehicles, must not exceed 200 micrograms per cubic metre more
than 18 times in a year.
In the first five days of 2017 Brixton Road had exceeded this annual
limit on a further 19 occasions, according to the London Air Quality
Network at King's College London.

China's air pollution crisis shows no sign of ending as nation fails
to lower coal use

For weeks northern China has been covered in a thick toxic smog. It
is one of the worst episodes of air pollution the country has seen,
affecting 460 million people...Cheap coal has powered China's
economic miracle and still provides 70 per cent of the country's
energy. The Government is reluctant to wean itself off coal, fearing
unemployment and unrest...
In a rare display of anger, China's rising middle class took to the
Chinese social media website "wechat", demanding the Government take
action and protect the children of China...
They said the Government's "war on pollution", now in its third
year, has not delivered results....— studies suggest more than one
million people die prematurely every year from the toxic air that
has engulfed northern China...."The Government should do something
and not just give us empty promises. Every year it gets worse."

*(Opinion) How climate scientists should explain the unacceptable risk
of doing nothing on global warming
<http://www.latimes.com/opinion/readersreact/la-ol-le-cliamte-change-ben-santer-20170106-story.html>*
If climate change is not from human activities and we proceed with
efforts to correct it, then some money is wasted and the fossil fuel
industry will suffer. The green industry will prosper with jobs
gained, we will probably get cleaner air to breath, and we will have
less dependence on foreign oil.
If climate change is from human activities and we do nothing, the
results could be devastating. The world could lose vast forests
along with the watersheds. Grasslands could die off with new dust
bowls. Our supplies of food and fresh water could be devastated.
People in hardest-hit areas stand to be displaced. The next
extinction could be humans.

January 8, 2003: Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Joseph Lieberman
(D-CT) introduce the bipartisan Climate Stewardship Act of 2003,
which would establish a federal cap-and-trade program to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. (The bill would be defeated in the Senate
in October 2003.)
