*The Pollution Paradox GEORGE MONBIOT
<http://www.monbiot.com/2017/01/20/the-pollution-paradox/>*

Trump's appointments reflect what I call the Pollution Paradox. The
more polluting a company is, the more money it must spend on
politics to ensure it is not regulated out of existence. Campaign
finance therefore comes to be dominated by dirty companies, ensuring
that they wield the greatest influence, crowding out their cleaner
rivals. Trump's cabinet is stuffed with people who owe their
    political careers to filth.
It was once possible to argue, rightly or wrongly, that the human
benefits of developing fossil fuel reserves might outweigh the
harm. But a combination of more refined climate science, that now
presents the risks in stark terms, and the plummeting costs of clean
technologies renders this argument as obsolete as a coal-fired power
    station.

*A Worsening Political Climate
<http://washingtonmonthly.com/2017/01/21/a-worsening-political-climate/>*
-- D.R. Tucker

It's a testament to Trump's amorality regarding our atmosphere that
he does not think, for one moment, about the world his son Barron
will inherit. All the cash in the world won't protect his child –
and all of our children and grandchildren – from the fierce floods
and savage storms that Trump's dirty-energy policies will condemn us
to. If a man will not care about his own flesh and blood, why would
    he care about yours?

Top UK climate scientist says global carbon emissions could be cut
by a third within a year if well-off westerners changed their lifestyle.
LONDON, 21 January, 2017 – Global carbon emissions could be cut by
one-third within 12 months if affluent westerners changed their way
of life, claims a leading climate change scientist.
Kevin Anderson, professor of energy and climate change at Manchester
University, in the UK, says a major reduction in personal air travel
    is a key starting point.
More than half of the carbon dioxide pollution that causes a large
part of global warming comes from the 10% best-off people on the
    planet, he argues....

*Eight Things We Learned From Scott Pruitt's EPA Confirmation Hearing
<https://mediamatters.org/blog/2017/01/20/eight-things-we-learned-scott-pruitt-s-epa-confirmation-hearing/215070>*

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, President-elect Trump's
choice to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), took part
in a contentious hearing before the Senate Environment and Public
Works Committee on January 18. The hearing largely focused on
Pruitt's deep ties to polluting energy companies and track record of
opposing the EPA's clean air and water safeguards. Here are eight
key moments from the hearing that are worthy of media attention.
    1. Pruitt doubled down on climate science denial, despite affirming
that climate change is not a "hoax."
    2. Pruitt misled about the basis of his opposition to EPA safeguards
against dangerous mercury pollution from power plants.
    3. Pruitt refused to rule out blocking California's clean car rules
    and other state-level pollution limits.
    4. Pruitt confirmed that he equates the interests of the oil
industry with those of the people of Oklahoma.
    5. Pruitt claimed he didn't solicit fossil fuel contributions for
    the Republican Attorneys General Association.
    6. Pruitt refused to recuse himself from his ongoing litigation
against the EPA, setting up an apparent conflict of interest.
    7. Pruitt inflated his environmental credentials by misrepresenting
    two poultry industry cases.
    8. Pruitt passed the buck on addressing Oklahoma's fracking-induced
    earthquakes.
(Senator) Sanders concluded: "If that's the type of EPA
administrator you will be, you're not going to get my vote."

*Trump Day 1: Global Warming's Fate
<https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/trump-day-1-global-warmings-fate/>*

If the new president delays climate action as promised, the world is
far more likely to miss its Paris agreement goals
The public may assume the U.S. and the rest of the world can delay
climate action for a presidential term or two, and catch up later.
But such a scenario is highly unlikely because cumulative greenhouse
gas emissions control temperature rise and effects such as sea level
rise and extreme weather. The longer the world waits to reduce
emissions, the lower its chances are for limiting warming to 2
degree Celsius, acknowledged as the upper safe limit for the planet.
"It's not like you shift the consequences eight years down the line,
and you just hit your target eight years later than planned,"
explains Ben Sanderson, a scientist at the National Center for
Atmospheric Research. "A decade of reduced ambition would have
    permanent consequences."

*This Day in Climate History January 22, 1970
<http://youtu.be/5LpspwT0ZwA> - from D.R. Tucker*

In his State of the Union address, President Nixon declares:
"The great question of the seventies is, shall we surrender to our
surroundings, or shall we make our peace with nature and begin to
make reparations for the damage we have done to our air, to our
    land, and to our water?
"Restoring nature to its natural state is a cause beyond party and
beyond factions. It has become a common cause of all the people of
this country. It is a cause of particular concern to young
Americans, because they more than we will reap the grim consequences
of our failure to act on programs which are needed now if we are to
    prevent disaster later.
"Clean air, clean water, open spaces—these should once again be the
birthright of every American. If we act now, they can be.
"We still think of air as free. But clean air is not free, and
neither is clean water. The price tag on pollution control is high.
Through our years of past carelessness we incurred a debt to nature,
and now that debt is being called...
"The automobile is our worst polluter of the air. Adequate control
requires further advances in engine design and fuel composition. We
shall intensify our research, set increasingly strict standards, and
strengthen enforcement procedures—and we shall do it now.
"We can no longer afford to consider air and water common property,
free to be abused by anyone without regard to the consequences.
Instead, we should begin now to treat them as scarce resources,
which we are no more free to contaminate than we are free to throw
garbage into our neighbor's yard." http://youtu.be/5LpspwT0ZwA
