Utopian ideas on*climate change*will get us precisely nowhere

Urging people to stop consuming stuff in order to slow the rate
of*climate change*is a gambit that is doomed to fail. It would be
helpful if shoppers put off buying a suit or installing a new
kitchen, but it's not going to happen. Demonising those who fly to
Barcelona for a long weekend is another tactic that will have almost
    no impact.
Consumption is how most people measure progress, and that will still
be the case next year and in 10 years’ time, when Trump is long
gone. Take a look at the figures for flights in and out of the UK,
home of some the world’s busiest airports. City Airport, which is
embarking on a £344m expansion, saw 4.3 million passengers in 2015....
So the answer must be to reduce emissions elsewhere – relying on
technological solutions rather than calls for abstinence.
Electric cars can look the same as today’s models – or they can be
much more futuristic. They can also continue to be an object of
conspicuous consumption, which campaigners will have to accept,
aiming to encourage the use of eco-transport and not enforce some
form of back-to-nature socialism via the back door.

The Sunday Shows Ignored This Calamitous*Global Warming*Report, But
    'SNL' Didn't

Debates about inaugural crowd size drowned out more weighty matters.
None of the major shows ― NBC's "Meet the Press," ABC's "This Week,"
CBS's "Face the Nation," CNN's "State of the Union" or Fox News'
"Fox News Sunday" ― included any discussion about the report
or*climate change*in general. In an amusing twist, the only mention
of the report came early Sunday morning during a segment on NBC’s
"Saturday Night Live." In it, comedian Michael Che lamented how
"hard it is to get people to freak out about bees dying or global
warming because everyone loves warm weather and they hate bees."
-Annual global temperature records have been broken five times since
    the beginning of the century ― in 2005, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
The NOAA found that last year:
-The globally averaged sea surface temperature was the highest on
record, 1.35 degree F above average.
-The globally averaged land surface temperature was the highest on
record, 2.57 degrees F above average.
-North America had its warmest year on record; South America and
Africa had their second; Asia and Europe had their third; and
    Australia had its fifth.
-The average Arctic sea ice extent for the year was 3.92 million
square miles, the smallest annual average since record-keeping began
    in 1979.
-The average Antarctic sea ice extent for the year was 4.31 million
square miles, the second smallest annual average since
    record-keeping began in 1979.
The beltway insiders on the Sunday news shows, however, seemed
preoccupied by talking about how many people attended President
Donald Trump’s inauguration, his lie about the estimation and the
    subsequent outrage over it.

(Lauren Weinstein has) initiated a study to explore the extent of
fake/false news on the Internet. Please use this form to report fake
or false news found on traditional websites and/or in social media
postings. For the purposes of this study, fake or false news means
specific content that you believe to be false but that is pretending
to be true. This does not include obvious parody or satire -- those
should not be reported. URLs (Internet addresses beginning with
http:// or https://) from anywhere in the world may be reported, but
for now please only report materials that are in English, and that
can be accessed publicly without any login being required. All
inputs on this form may be released publicly after verification as
part of this project, with the exception of your (optional) name and
email address, which will be kept private and will not released or
used for any purposes beyond this study. This form may be reached
via https://factsquad.com or https://alt-facts.net. Thank you for
participating in this study to better understand the nature and
scope of fake/false news on the Internet.

How arguments about nuclear weapons shaped the debate over global
    warming.
Trump has often contradicted himself on the subject of nuclear
weapons, but one of the more interesting things he's said about them
is that they are far more dangerous to the planet than*global
    warming*is. It's a revealing comparison.
(Carl) Sagan launched a campaign to warn the world about "nuclear
winter"; the very term ... brought together the weapons and the
    weather...
Nuclear winter did not end the Cold War, but it did weaken the logic
of deterrence, and not merely by undermining the idea of a winnable
nuclear war. Nuclear winter relied on computer models and
projections; its predictions were uncertain. Deterrence relies on
computer models and projections; its predictions are uncertain...
"Whether nuclear weapons will continue to be effective in preventing
limited wars among major powers is an open question." The case for
deterrence began to fall apart in the nineteen-nineties and
two-thousands, he argues, owing to a lack of leadership. This isn’t
entirely correct. Presidents in that period did fail to make the
case for deterrence, but deterrence had already been dismantled by
    the spectre of nuclear winter.
The biggest consequence of the nuclear-winter debate, though, has
had to do not with nuclear-weapons policy but with the environmental
    movement.
In 1988, funded, in part, by ExxonMobil, the Marshall Institute
turned its attention to the science behind global warming..
The nuclear-winter debate has long since been forgotten, but you can
still spy it behind every cloud and confusion.
Critics of climate-change science who ground their argument on
uncertainty have either got to apply that same standard of evidence
to nuclear-weapons strategy or else find a better argument. Because,
as Sagan once put it, theories that involve the end of the world are
not amenable to experimental verification—at least, not more than
    once. - Jill Lepore

The immediate threat to California's*climate-change*fight isn't
    Trump, it's this

With President Trump in the Oval Office, California officials are
bracing for the possibility that the new administration will
undermine the state's landmark policies on*climate change*. But the
more immediate threat isn't coming from Washington...
The 4-year-old legal challenge pursued by the California Chamber of
Commerce and a collection of business interests argues that the
cap-and-trade program represents an unconstitutional tax. The
system, intended to create a financial incentive to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, requires companies to purchase permits to
    pollute.
...the lawsuit has been a ticking time bomb that could eliminate a
key source of revenue and undermine a program touted as an
international model for fighting global warming... A decision could
be released within the next three months, but it likely won’t be the
final word — the losing party can still appeal to the California
    Supreme Court..

Geoengineering refers to directly altering the Earth or its

    While*climate change*is seemingly unrelated to night-sky

*"*One of the dirty little secrets of the IPCC is that it requires
negative emissions,*"* Long said, referring to the process of
recapturing CO2 that has already been released. No existing models
predict staying below the necessary levels, she said, which means
that it’s not enough to simply stop emitting carbon dioxide; further
steps will need to be taken to remove what’s already in the air.
Geoengineering Earth’s atmosphere includes several different
proposals for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Various
proposed methods can lock solid or liquid carbon into the ground, in
    trees or in water...
The panel members agreed that geoengineering was only a short-term
solution to help scale down the planet’s temperature before it
reaches catastrophic levels — it’s not a long-term, permanent solution.
*"There’s no question to my mind that saving our civilization and
many other species is more important than our ability to do
ground-based astronomy for a few decades," Grinspoon said.
