Baby Doomers: As *climate change*threatens ... women are...

People weigh parenting decisions because a child in America produces
45,000 pounds of CO2 yearly. In Ethiopia? 221...With the UN
announcing that the global population will hit nearly 10 billion
people by 2050, and experts warning that man-made*climate
change*will strain resources to a dire extent, 2016 became the year
of the population-related think-piece, each one...
Refocusing this reproductive discussion away from population and
toward social systems (and those who implement them) is difficult.
When Erle Ellis, PhD, Professor of Geography & Environmental Systems
at the University of Maryland, presented the idea in a New York
Times editorial in 2013, he received widespread backlash...
"It's not about how many people are in a society," Ellis told Salon.
"It's about how these societies use resources. For instance, there's
worry about how we're going to feed 11 billion people, which is
where experts think we might top out during this century. But the
reason people starve is not because there isn't enough food in the
world — it's about how that food is distributed. This has nothing to
do with productivity. It's a social problem."
If you're still feeling climate change-induced despair over the
decision to have children, take heart...
"Make a choice that's best for you," Kallman told Salon. "There's a
wide range of experiences, and we honor and affirm all of them. The
only recommendation we make is to get involved. Whatever you decide,
it's not the end of this fight."

*Sea Level Acceleration by tamino
<https://tamino.wordpress.com/2017/01/30/sea-level-acceleration/>*

.A regular big lie from climate deniers, in fact a huge lie from
climate deniers, is when they deny that there's been acceleration of
sea level rise. Sea level acceleration is a fact.
...average rate of sea level rise from 1900 to 2000 is about 1.6
mm/yr. There are other reconstructions of course, and they lead to
the same conclusion: that the average rate during the 20th century
    is less than 2 mm/yr...
The average rate over the last 24 years is about 3.4 mm/yr. That's
about twice the average rate since 1880. It's certainly over 3 mm/yr.
    20th-century average rate: less than 2 mm/yr. 21st-century average
rate: more than 3 mm/yr. Three is larger than two. Conclusion: the
rate of sea level rise went up. That's acceleration.

Limited sign of soil adaptation to climate*warming*
    <https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/01/170130140004.htm>

Science Daily -‎9 hours ago‎

While scientists and policy experts debate the impacts of*global
warming*, Earth's soil is releasing roughly nine times more carbon
dioxide to the atmosphere than all human activities combined.
This huge carbon flux from soil, which is due to the natural
respiration of soil microbes and plant roots, begs one of the
central questions in climate change science. As the global climate
warms, will soil respiration rates increase, adding even more carbon
dioxide to the atmosphere and accelerating climate change?
One conclusion from the synthesis is that rising global temperatures
result in regionally variable responses in soil respiration, with
colder climates being considerably more responsive. "Consistently
across all biomes, we found that soil respiration increased with
soil temperature up to about 25° C (77° F)," said Joanna Carey, a
postdoctoral scientist in the Marine Biological Laboratory
Ecosystems Center in Woods Hole, Mass., and the lead scientist on
the study. Above the 25°C threshold, respiration rates decreased
with further increases in soil temperature. "
The team also found that soil microbes in experimental warming
studies showed no sign of adaptation -- meaning a muted respiration
response to rising temperatures -- in all of the biomes studied,
except desert and boreal forest. This indicates that soils will
typically respond strongly to increasing temperature by releasing
more carbon dioxide, said Jianwu Tang with the Marine Biological
Laboratory Ecosystems Center and a lead scientist on the study.
"Going forward, we need to better explore the biome-specific
responses as global temperatures shift beyond the historic range,"
Frey said. To understand how global carbon in soils will respond to
climate change, the authors stress, more data are needed from under-
and nonrepresented regions, especially the Arctic and the tropics.

Ebell: Purge Necessary at EPA to Rid 'Scientists Who Believe the Global
Warming Alarmist Agenda'
<http://www.ecowatch.com/ebell-epa-purge-2218823381.html>

In various interviews on Thursday, former U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) transition chief Myron Ebell confirmed the
Trump team would probably seek significant cuts to the agency's
workforce and budget, but would not provide details of specific
policy recommendations he made to the president.
Ebell, who told the AP that the federal government has "been staffed
with scientists who believe the global-warming alarmist agenda,"
floated the idea of downsizing EPA from 15,000 to 5,000 employees as
an "aspirational goal" but acknowledged that getting cuts that
significant past Congress would be a challenge for the administration.

*GOVERNMENT SCIENTISTS AT U.S. CLIMATE CONFERENCE TERRIFIED TO SPEAK
WITH THE PRESS
<https://theintercept.com/2017/01/26/government-scientists-at-u-s-climate-conference-terrified-to-speak-with-the-press/>*

"It's strange," the woman said. "People keep walking up to me and
giving me hugs." Like several others I spoke to for this story, she
declined to tell me her name out of fear that she might suffer
retaliation, including being fired. She was not being paranoid.
Already, agency higher ups had warned the EPA staff against talking
to the press, or even updating blogs or issuing news releases. "Only
send out critical messages, as messages can be shared broadly and
end up in the press," said one EPA missive that was shared broadly
and ended up in the press. And while the staffer was at the meeting,
the EPA's new brass issued another memo to staff requiring all
regional offices to submit a list of external meetings and
presentations, noting which might be controversial and why.

*Rains From Thunderstorms Rising Rapidly in Europe, Asia
<http://www.climatecentral.org/news/rains-from-thunderstorms-rising-europe-asia-21113-21113>*

Across a vast swath of Europe and Asia, rain is increasingly falling
in the short, localized bursts associated with thunderstorms,
seemingly at the expense of events where a steady rain falls over
many hours, a new study finds.
The study, detailed Wednesday in the journal Science Advances,
directly links this trend to the warming and moistening of the
atmosphere caused by rising greenhouse gas levels.
The results fit with rainfall trends already observed in the U.S.,
as well as model predictions that massive rains associated with
thunderstorms could become both more frequent and more intense in
the U.S. as the world continues to heat up.
As these trends continue with warming, they could have major impacts
on water management. The trade-off in non-convective rains for more
convective rain means that there will be fewer days that have rain,
but more rain falling on days when storms do occur,
A shift from more frequent non-convective rains to less frequent
downpours could overwhelm the ability of the soil and plants to
absorb rainwater. If the ground can't absorb the water, it runs off
into streams, potentially causing floods and changing how cities and
countries must think about capturing their water.

*Chile's forest fires partly due to poor planning, say fire chiefs
<https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jan/29/chiles-forest-fires-poor-planning-fire-chiefs-monoculture-fire-breaks>*

Fire brigade chiefs said that poor preparation for climate change
and large monoculture plantations have contributed to Chile's worst
forest fires in recent history, as the human, economic and
    environmental effects continued to grow.
Eleven people have died in the blazes, which have devastated 233,000
sq miles (more than three times the size of Hong Kong) in recent
    weeks...
Despite support from US and Russian supertanker aircraft and the
arrival of specialist teams from other countries, the national
emergency office acknowledged on Saturday that fewer than half of
the 110 fires are under control...
Monoculture plantations and too few fire breaks contributed to 11
deaths and devastation of 233,000 sq miles

Political Influence on Climate Change Research - House Oversight
    Committee - 2007-01-30 - Product 196465-1-DVD - House Committee on
Government Reform and Oversight. The House Oversight Committee held
a hearing on possible political interference in the work of
government climate change scientists. Lawmakers questioned whether
the White House had altered reports by government scientists over
the past several years to mask the problems posed by climate change.
They highlighted a survey published by two advocacy groups, the
Union of Concerned Scientists and the Government Accountability
Project, which found that 46 percent of the federal scientists they
polled reported they personally had experienced or perceived
pressure to eliminate the words "global warming" or "climate change"
from their writings, and roughly the same percentage had experienced
edits that changed the meaning of their findings. Filmed by C-SPAN.

Trump adviser predicts clash with Tillerson on*climate change*
    <https://www.ft.com/content/10907460-e67f-11e6-967b-c88452263daf>

EPA transition chief warns state department pick may oppose pledge
    to quit Paris deal...
Mr Trump has called*climate change*a "hoax" devised by China to hurt
US industry. He also pledged to "cancel" the Paris climate deal
    signed by almost every country...
However, Mr Tillerson, ... told senators during his confirmation
hearings in early January that he believed "the risk of climate
change does exist" and the US needed a "seat at the table" in
    international discussions on the issue.
Mr Ebell ...believed Mr Trump would stick to his campaign promises
...to dismantle a cornerstone of President Barack Obama's Paris
commitments, [and] the clean power plan to cut emissions from the
electricity sector. Scrapping that plan would make it much harder
for the US to meet its Paris targets, said Mr Ebell.
Mr Ebell also flagged... the prospect of redirecting research that
focused on the "human finger print" on global warming, rather than
    natural variability in the climate.
