*Little Algae creates Huge Melt Feedback on Greenland Ice

Algae responsible for large albedo feedback on Greenland's frozen
surface, not only soot and dust.
We believe gathering measurements from the surface of Greenland ice is
fundamental to advancing our understanding of the melting Arctic.

Dark Snow 2017 Update "Am I really seeing that?" is a common sensation

*'Sharknado' creator: Epic fishy storm could actually happen
<http://nypost.com/2017/07/28/can-climate-change-cause-something-worse-than-a-sharknado/>*
Climate change bites! video preview https://youtu.be/H1CsdePN14Y
A "Sharkicane" - a terrifying twist on the meteorological havoc wrought
in the cult flick "Sharknado" - is more likely than ever to strike
Earth, the movie's creator jawed to The Post.
"Sharknado 5: Global Swarming" takes a campy dive into what might happen
if climate change spiraled out of control - and features a raging
hurricane-tornado that sucks up massive man-eaters and spits them out
onto Rome, London and Amsterdam.
But as the planet heats up, wild weather patterns really do increase the
chance of a fishy storm of biblical proportions, according to
"Sharknado" originator Thunder Levin....
Not long ago, hundreds of fish really did fall from the sky in the
northern Australia town of Lajamanu, where meteorologists said the freak
2010 storm was probably caused by a tornado that carried the sea
creatures hundreds of miles, he continued...
Thelatest "Sharknado" installment
<http://nypost.com/2013/07/12/sharknado-rules-twitter-as-campy-shark-thriller-starring-ex-90210-star-becomes-viral-hit/>-
whose tagline is "Make America Bait Again!" - centers on the same main
characters, Fin and April, who set off on a journey across the world to
save their son after he gets swept up by a Sharknado.
The disaster horror-comedy stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid and features
cameos from Chris Kattan, Margaret Cho along with the has-been hunk
Fabio, who plays the pope.
The latest installment of the shark flick is sure to make a splash,
Levin said.
"The movie is going to be a lot bigger than previous ones because it's
all around the world. It's a lot of fun," he said. "I like the ending
because it sets up a whole lot of possibilities for the future."

*Climate Change Could Cause Heat-Related Deaths to Spike for 10 Major US
Cities, (Ozone) Study Says
<https://weather.com/science/environment/news/climate-change-heat-deaths-american-cities-atlanta-boston-chicago-new-york>*
Heat-related fatalities will drastically increase in 10 major U.S.
cities if climate change is allowed to continue at its current rate,
according to a new study.
Researchers from Brown University incorporated temperature-related
mortality
<http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016041201730750X>rates
from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New
York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. with temperature models between
the years 2085 and 2090. Their findings were published in the journal
Environmental International.
The conversation about climate change is typically focused on the costs
of mitigation, but this paper shows the human toll of policy inaction,"
said study senior author Gregory Wellenius, an associate professor of
epidemiology at Brown's School of Public Health. "These results show the
cost in terms of human lives due to just this one aspect of climate
change: temperature."
In the "worst case" scenario, the average heat-related mortality rate
would be 10,300 per year by 2050 and 26,000 by 2090. In the scenario
where the rate of human-caused climate change is curbed, the number of
heat-related deaths would be approximately 7,700 by 2050 and 10,400 by 2090.
When population growth was factored in, the predicted rise in
heat-related deaths increased significantly. Some 16,400 fatalities
would be heat-related by 2050 in the "worst case," with 52,339 deaths
expected in 2090, while the better-case projected 12,300 and 21,100
deaths in 2050 and 2090, respectively.

*Projected temperature-related deaths in ten large U.S. metropolitan
areas under different climate change scenarios
<Projected%20temperature-related%20deaths%20in%20ten%20large%20U.S.%20metropolitan%20areas%20under%20different%20climate%20change%20scenarios>*Highlights
In the context of a warming climate, we project that the heat-related
death rate will increase in 10 U.S. metropolitan areas.
This increase may be partially offset by a reduction in the cold-related
death rate.
We project that the net change will be positive in 8 of the 10 locations
studied.
Population growth may increase the absolute number of future
temperature-related deaths.
Future temperature-related deaths may be reduced by lowering greenhouse
gas emissions.

*Chokepoints and Vulnerabilities in Global Food Trade
<https://www.chathamhouse.org/publication/chokepoints-vulnerabilities-global-food-trade>
*Executive Summary
Global food security is underpinned by trade in a few crops and
fertilizers. Just
three crops - maize, wheat and rice - account for around 60 per cent of
global food
energy intake. A fourth crop, soybean, is the world's largest source
of animal protein
feed, accounting for 65 per cent of global protein feed supply. Each
year, the world's
transport system moves enough maize, wheat, rice and soybean to feed
approximately
2.8 billion people. Meanwhile, the 180 million tonnes of fertilizers
applied to
farmland annually play a vital role in helping us grow enough wheat,
rice and
maize to sustain our expanding populations.
International trade in these commodities is growing, increasing pressure on
a small number of 'chokepoints' - critical junctures on transport routes
through which
exceptional volumes of trade pass. Three principal kinds of chokepoint
are critical
to global food security: maritime straits along shipping lanes; coastal
infrastructure
in major crop-exporting regions; and inland transport infrastructure in
major
exporting regions.
A serious interruption at one or more of these chokepoints could
conceivably lead
to supply shortfalls and price spikes, with systemic consequences that
could reach
beyond food markets. More commonplace disruptions may not in themselves
trigger
crises, but can add to delays, spoilage and transport costs,
constraining market
responsiveness and contributing to higher prices and increased volatility.

from D.R. Tucker*
July 29, 2004: At the Democratic National Convention, Senator John Kerry
of Massachusetts, the Democratic Presidential nominee, notes that if he
is elected, he will "have a vice president who will not conduct secret
meetings with polluters to rewrite our environmental laws."
He also observes:
"We value an America that controls its own destiny because it's finally
and forever independent of Mideast oil. What does it mean for our
economy and our national security when we have only 3 percent of the
world's oil reserves, yet we rely on foreign countries for 53 percent of
what we consume?
"I want an America that relies on its ingenuity and innovation, not the
Saudi royal family.
"And our energy plan for a stronger America - our energy plan will
invest in new technologies and alternative fuels and the cars of the
future, so that no young American in uniform will ever be held hostage
to our dependence on oil from the Middle East."
