*Climate change*experts focus on solutions in face of shifting US
policy <http://news.ucsc.edu/2017/02/climate-change.html>
UC Santa Cruz (press release) -5 hours ago
Conference brought together top climate scientists and policy
experts for a series of talks and panel discussions
Scientists agree that human activities are changing Earth's climate
and that the consequences for humanity could be dire. Experts also
believe currently available technologies can provide solutions to
the problems of climate change. Implementing the transition to
sustainable energy technologies won't be easy, however, and the need
for action is urgent, according to the scientists and policymakers
gathered at the fourth annual UC Santa Cruz Climate Conference, held
on campus February 24-25.
In his keynote address, climate scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan
made the case that climate change now poses an existential threat to
our civilization. "Climate change can reach crisis levels in this
century, affecting rich and poor alike," he said. "It is an urgent
problem and requires urgent solutions."

*Exxon's Oil Industry Peers Knew About Climate Dangers in the 1970s, Too

Members of an American Petroleum Institute task force on CO2
included scientists from nearly every major oil company, including
Exxon, Texaco and Shell....
An InsideClimate News investigative series has shown that Exxon
launched its own cutting-edge CO2 sampling program in 1978 in order
to understand a phenomenon it suspected could harm its business.
About a decade later, Exxon spearheaded campaigns to cast doubt on
climate science and stall regulation of greenhouse gases. The
previously unpublished papers about the climate task force indicate
that API, the industry's most powerful lobbying group, followed a
similar arc to Exxon's in confronting the threat of climate change....
Just as Exxon began tracking climate science in the late 1970s, when
only small groups of scientists in academia and the government were
engaged in the research, other oil companies did the same, the
documents show. Like Exxon, the companies also expressed a
willingness to understand the links between their product, greater
CO2 concentrations and the climate, the papers reveal. Some
corporations ran their own research units as well, although they
were smaller and less ambitious than Exxon's and focused on climate
modeling, said James J. Nelson, the former director of the task force.

also adds new questions, including trust in climate scientists, the
belief that global warming will harm plants and animals, how often
Americans discuss global warming with their friends and family, and
how often they hear about global warming in the media (available at
the state level)...
Relevant to President Trump's likely effort to repeal the Clean

The Guardian
by John Abraham - As with all such lists, the 300 'scientists' badly
lack climate expertise
First of all, hardly anyone on the list was a climate scientist;
many were not even natural scientists. It is almost as though anyone
with a college degree (and there are about 21 million enrolled in
higher education programs just in the USA) was qualified to sign
that letter....
Okay but what about the signers of the letter? Surely they are
experts in the field? Not so much. It was very difficult to find the
list of signers online however I was able to acquire it with some
help. See for yourself - Google "300 scientists letter climate
change" in the past week. You will see many stories in the press,
but try finding the actual letter or the list of names. The version
I obtained was dated February 23, 2017 which helps narrow your
searching. In an era of Dr. Google, it is unbelievable that the
letter itself was not made more available...
. These 300 scientists must be pretty good at climate science,
right? Well let's just go through the list, alphabetically....

degradation is a Pandora's box that lays bare the divides between class,
ethnicity and a whole host of other differences people cite as their
cause for war; global warming is degrading resources worldwide, but
particularly affects the least developed countries. In contrast, the
developed countries in their colder climates enjoy relative security and
may stand to benefit from warmer temperatures – to make matters worse
these are the nations with the greatest cumulative contribution to
anthropogenic climate change.

*Trump's Potential Science Adviser Will Happer: Carbon Dioxide Demonized
Just Like "Poor Jews Under Hitler"*
<https://www.desmogblog.com/2017/02/25/trump-potential-science-adviser-will-happer-carbon-dioxide-demonized-jews>*
* By Graham Readfearn President Donald Trump is on the look-out for a
chief science adviser, but who to choose?...
If his most recent appointments are any indication of the future,
then, on climate change at least, Americans should expect the
president to tap a climate science denier....
So it is little surprise then that one person reportedly in the
running is 77-year-old Princeton atomic physicist William Happer....
Happer has for more than a decade rejected all the credible evidence
on the risks of human-caused climate change. He is often described
as an "expert" on climate change, yet his record of publishing
research on the issue in peer-reviewed scientific journals is almost
non-existent...
Happer's expertise is in atomic physics. He served in the George
H.W. Bush administration as a science director...
But since the late 90s, Happer has become known for his outspoken
and often offensive views on climate change and climate scientists,
whom he has described as being "more like a cult."...
"They're glassy-eyed and they chant. It will potentially harm the
image of all science," he told The Guardian...
He has also claimed that the "demonization" of carbon dioxide is
like the "demonization of poor Jews under Hitler."...
In recent times Happer has been associating with conspiracy
theorists and other oddballs as he rolls out the same talking points
that have been his staple for years. ..
Since the mid-2000s, Happer was involved with the George C. Marshall
Institute, a think tank that concentrated heavily on pushing claims
that global warming concerns had been over-hyped. Happer was a
former chair of the institute — one of many to take cash from oil
giant ExxonMobil...
Happer is now the president of the CO2 Coalition — a group created
after the Marshall Institute folded — with the tagline that carbon
dioxide (CO2) is "vital for life."

- from D.R. Tucker*
March 1, 2002: The New York Times reports:
"Eighteen of the energy industry's top 25 financial contributors to
the Republican Party advised Vice President Dick Cheney's national
energy task force last year, according to interviews and election
records.
"Critics of the Bush administration's energy policy have long
suspected that many of the corporations that were invited to advise
the White House were large energy concerns that had contributed
heavily to President Bush's campaign and the Republican Party in
2000. The White House has refused to release the names of the
companies and individuals consulted during the formulation of the
administration's energy policy last spring. It has been sued for the
information.
"But interviews and task force correspondence demonstrate an
apparent correlation between large campaign contributions and access
to Mr. Cheney's task force. Of the top 25 energy industry donors to
the Republican Party before the November 2000 election, 18
corporations sent executives or representatives to meet with Mr.
Cheney, the task force chairman, or members of the task force and
its staff. The companies include the Enron Corporation, the Southern
Company, the Exelon Corporation, BP, the TXU Corporation,
FirstEnergy and Anadarko Petroleum."
