House Republicans Buck Trump, Call for*Climate Change* Solutions
<http://www.newsweek.com/house-republicans-buck-trump-climate-change-568267>
Newsweek -8 hours ago
Seventeen Republican members of Congress from diverse
districts....submitted a resolution in the House Wednesday
acknowledging that "human activities" have had an impact on global
climate and resolving to create and support "economically viable"
mitigation efforts...
The resolution, sponsored by representatives Elise Stefanik of New
York, Carlos Curbelo of Florida and Ryan Costello of Pennsylvania,
is being submitted in the midst of an unprecedented effort by the
most anti-science administration in recent American history to
remove climate science studies and data from federal agencies.

On Team Trump, influence of the 'Inhofe brigade' matters
<http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/team-trump-influence-the-inhofe-brigade-matters>
MSNBC -9 hours ago
There are distinct spheres of influence inside Donald Trump's political
operation. There's the Breitbart Wing, made up on several White House
aides who worked for the right-wing website; the Goldman Sachs Wing,
made up of a growing number of folks who joined the administration after
stints at the Wall Street giant; and the Jeff Sessions Wing, which
includes both the U.S. Attorney General and some of his former Senate
aides who now hold key posts in the Trump administration...
But let's not forget that Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), one of the
nation's highest profile climate deniers, seems to have a contingent of
his own. The Washington Post reported yesterday:
At least half a dozen former aides to Inhofe – and counting – have been
hired into top positions at the EPA and the White House. The chief of
staff and deputy chief of staff to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, a
fellow Oklahoman and longtime friend of Inhofe, spent years working for
the senator. Pruitt's senior advisers on air, climate and legal issues
are Inhofe alumni. In addition, two former Inhofe aides have become top
domestic and international energy and environmental advisers to
President Trump. […]
Ryan Jackson, Inhofe's former chief of staff, helps account for part of
why so many of the senator's aides are now helping guide the
administration's policymaking. Jackson, who helped shepherd Pruitt's
nomination, then became the administrator's chief of staff and started
tapping his former colleagues for top agency posts.
Stephen Brown, vice president for government affairs at Tesoro, a major
oil refiner, told the Post, "The Inhofe brigade has landed, secured the
beach and is moving inland with precision as well as speed."
"Inhofe was like the original climate-denier in chief. He was one of
the first people spouting this gibberish – fact-free but dangerous
gibberish," Gene Karpinski, president of the League of Conservation
Voters, told the Post. "Now he and his cronies have far more reach and
are far more dangerous than they've ever been…. That's good news for the
polluters but horrible news for public health."..
Gallup published a report yesterday that found Americans' concerns about
the climate crisis have reached record highs, with most of the public
agreeing that global warming is occurring; it's a serious threat; and
it's the result of human activity...
The Inhofe brigade isn't likely to care....

formally evaluate the Obama administration's landmark greenhouse gas
emissions standards for cars.
The action, a top request from the automaker lobby to the new president,
is the first step toward potentially weakening the aggressive standards
that set a goal of a 54.5 mile-per-gallon auto fleet in 2025.

*Study: Soils Could Release Much More Carbon Than Expected as Climate
Warms <http://newscenter.lbl.gov/2017/03/09/soils-carbon-climate/>*
Deeper soil layers more sensitive to warming than previously
thought, Berkeley Lab scientists find
The scientists say these findings suggest the degree to which soil
organic carbon influences climate change may be currently
underestimated...
"There's an assumption that carbon in the subsoil is more stable and
not as responsive to warming as in the topsoil, but we've learned
that's not the case," says Torn. "Deeper soil layers contain a lot
of carbon, and our work indicates it's a key missing component in
our understanding of the potential feedback of soils to the planet's
climate."..
The research was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of
Science...
Soils could release much more CO2 than expected into the atmosphere
as the climate warms, according to new research by scientists from
the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
(Berkeley Lab).
Their findings are based on a field experiment that, for the first
time, explored what happens to organic carbon trapped in soil when
all soil layers are warmed, which in this case extend to a depth of
100 centimeters. The scientists discovered that warming both the
surface and deeper soil layers at three experimental plots increased
the plots' annual release of CO2 by 34 to 37 percent over non-warmed
soil. Much of the CO2 originated from deeper layers, indicating that
deeper stores of carbon are more sensitive to warming than
previously thought.
The paper, entitled "The whole soil carbon flux in response to
warming," will be published online by the journal Science on

Environmental policies in Australia - Headlines and Key findings
<https://soe.environment.gov.au/key-findings-all>
Executive summary
In the past 5 years (2011–16), environmental policies and management
practices in Australia have achieved improvements in the state and
trends of parts of the Australian environment. Australia's built
environment, natural and cultural heritage, and marine and Antarctic
environments are generally in good condition...
There are, however, areas where the condition of the environment is
poor and/or deteriorating. These include the more populated coastal
areas and some of the growth areas within urban environments, where
human pressure is greatest (particularly in south-eastern
Australia); and the extensive land-use zone of Australia, where
grazing is considered a major threat to biodiversity...
In Australia, the key drivers of environmental change are population
growth and economic activity. The extent to which these drivers lead
to environmental impacts depends on a range of factors, ..

*Report: Medical Alert! Climate Change Is Harming Our Health
<https://medsocietiesforclimatehealth.org/reports/medical-alert/>*
Most Americans understand that climate change is real and are concerned
about it. But most still see climate change as a faraway threat, in both
time and place, and as something that threatens the future of polar
bears but not necessarily people. The reality, however, is starkly
different: climate change is already causing problems in communities in
every region of our nation, and from a doctor's perspective, it's
harming our health...
Most Americans are not aware of the health harms of climate change. A
recent survey showed that most Americans have not considered how global
warming might affect people's health, and few (32%) can name a specific
way in which climate change is harming our health. Few are aware that
some groups of Americans - including our children, our elders, the sick
and the poor—are most likely to be harmed by climate change. None of
these survey findings is surprising. There has been relatively little
public discussion of the health harms of climate change. But we also
know people are eager to hear from us. Most survey respondents said, in
fact, that their primary care physician is a trusted source for
information about this topic...
We—physicians in medical societies representing over half of the
nation's doctors—see a need to share our growing understanding and
concern about the health consequences of climate change with all Americans.

Tribes from around the county have been gathering in Washington,
D.C., for days, erecting teepees on the National Mall near the White
House.
The protest follows months of demonstrations in a remote part of
North Dakota, where the Standing Rock Sioux tribe demonstrated in an
attempt to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline crossing upstream from
their reservation...
That pipeline is being installed now, after Trump signed an
executive order last month smoothing the path for construction. He
also cleared the way for the Keystone XL project that would pipe
Canadian crude into the United States...
The protesters, some wearing traditional tribal garb, carried signs
reading "Native Lives Matter", "Water is Life", and "Protect the
Water" while marching. ..
The Native Nations March, organized by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
and the Indigenous Environmental Network, comes a month after the
Army greenlighted completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline without
an environmental study. ..
"There's not a chance he's going to go to a reservation," Phillips
said. "There's not a chance he's going to go to the people to find
out what's going on."

For the second year in a row, atmospheric carbon dioxide
concentrations have climbed at a record pace. According to data from
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, carbon dioxide
levels jumped by three parts per million in both 2015 and 2016 and
now rest at about 405 parts per million...
It's the biggest jump ever observed at the agency's Mauna Loa
Baseline Atmospheric Observatory in Hawaii, where the measurements
were recorded. Similar observations have been recorded at stations
all over the world, said Pieter Tans, who leads the Carbon Cycle
Greenhouse Gases group at NOAA's Greenhouse Gas Reference Network...
Throughout the last decade, the average rate of increase has been
around 2.3 parts per million per year, Tans added...
