*How Americans Think About Climate Change, in Six Maps
<https://nyti.ms/2nvj5Ok>*

Americans overwhelmingly believe that global warming is happening,
and that carbon emissions should be scaled back. But fewer are sure
that the changes will harm them personally. New data released by
Yale researchers gives the most detailed view yet of public opinion
    on global warming.
Americans want to restrict carbon emissions from coal power plants.
The White House and Congress may do the opposite.

The maps depict estimates of the percentage of American adults (age
25 and over) who hold particular beliefs, attitudes, and policy
preferences about global warming. The estimates were generated from
a statistical model that incorporates actual survey responses from a
large dataset of >18,000 individuals since 2008. The actual survey
responses were combined with demographic data from the Census to
estimate opinions based on information such as gender, race and
ethnicity, and educational attainment; they also take into account
changes in public opinion over time.

Activists known as Water Protectors have stood with Standing Rock
Sioux leaders in North Dakota to defend land and water from a $3.8
billion, 1,200-mile pipeline slated to run under Lake Oahe and the
Missouri River. The Spirit of Standing Rock is a collection of
soulful narratives from Water Protectors articulating what they
believe are the defining world views, actions, and stories of our day.
Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) filmmaker and educator Paulette Moore and
YES! Magazine Co-Founder and Editor-at-large Sarah van Gelder
created this documentary from their footage and reporting from
Standing Rock camps gathered in the fall of 2016.

- from D.R. Tucker*
The Boston Globe reports on the collapse of the coal industry in the
United States.
*"Coal plants challenged by natural gas, tough regulations"* By 2020,
about 60 gigawatts of coal-fired electric-generating capacity — enough
to power an estimated 48.5 million homes — is expected to disappear, at
least partly due to the expense of meeting federal rules to cut
pollution from power plants, according to the Energy Department./
