*[**What the World is doing about climate change**]*
[clipped from Report on UN Environment negotiations]
[SPM = Summary for Policy Makers]
[SDGs = Sustainable Development Goals ]
UNEP GEO Bulletin
Volume 182 Number 9 | Sunday, 27 January 2019
*Summary Report of the Intergovernmental Meeting on the Sixth Global
Environment Outlook Summary for Policy Makers*
- - -
Presentation by GEO-6 Co-Chairs: GEO-6 Assessment Co-Chair Joyeeta
Gupta, India, said the report's key underlying messages are:
- a healthy planet supports healthy people;
- an unhealthy planet leads to unhealthy people;
- drivers and pressures need to be addressed;
- current science justifies action now;
- environmental policy is necessary but not sufficient; and
- a healthy planet, healthy people, and healthy economy are mutually
supportive goals.
GEO-6 Assessment Co-Chair Paul Ekins, the UK, said the report considers
11 cross-cutting issues, noting that addressing social issues, gender
equity, and climate change remain key for achieving all of the SDGs. He
outlined messages on the effectiveness of environmental policy, including:
- the importance of multi-level governance;
- the need for sustained and conclusive actions;
- the world is not on track to meet the SDGs;
- transformative change and an integrated approach are required; and
- data gaps need to be addressed but that should not delay urgent action.
- -
Oceans and coasts: Co-Chair Ekins presented the amendments to the
section on drivers of change in oceans and coasts, including requests by:
- Canada to include ocean pollution and ocean acidification;
- Switzerland to link increased atmospheric temperature with ocean
temperature;
- Norway to replace "fish stocks" with "marine living resources";
- Egypt to include governance approaches and financial resources for
implementation;
- Chile on including the precautionary approach for emerging
technologies; and
- Chile, Argentina, and Brazil to clarify the definition of "blue economy."
On climate change impacts on oceans, delegates agreed to refer to all,
and not just tropical, coral reefs, and with France to refer to
integrated coastal zone management.
On the role of oceans in the global economy, delegates agreed to
Norway's suggested text on the need to invest in fisheries monitoring
and gear technologies.
- - -
Final SPM Text: The final text on this section contains information on:
- the need for urgent, sustained and inclusive actions;
- the need for transformative change and an integrated approach;
- innovation for systemic transformation to achieve environmental goals; and
- benefits from following sustainable future pathways...

*Australia's Extreme Heatwaves Have Killed a Million Fish, Dozens of Horses*
Temperatures in Port Augusta soared to 49.1C (120.4F) on Thursday,
making it the hottest spot in the country.
- -
"Nothing will stop this fish kill unless we get proper river flows and
water levels in our dams back up to normal," he added. "We are doing
everything we can to try and limit the damage."
January is normally the hottest month of the year in Australia, so the
country may finally get some slight relief in February before autumn
starts to officially kick in. But as experts pointed out, this is a
problem that is will only to get worse as global temperatures rise in
the coming years and decades.

[Australian Climate Scientists tell of their anxiety - 8 min video]
*Climate scientists reveal their fears for the future*
ABC News (Australia)

Climate scientists rarely speak publicly about their personal views. But
in the wake of some extreme weather events in Australia, the specialists
who make predictions about our climate reveal they're experiencing
sometimes deep anxieties.

[audio interview with the Evangelical Climate Diva Dr Katharine Hayhoe]
*Climate Change Prophet*
On the podcast: A scientist who is also an evangelical Christian wants
conservatives to understand the dangers of climate change.
Climate change is one of the most politically divisive issues in the
United States today: Most liberals embrace the scientific view that it's
a largely man-made phenomenon threatening our very existence, whereas
many conservatives see it as fake news.
Standing at the intersection between these two groups is Katharine
Hayhoe, an evangelical Christian who is also an atmospheric scientist.
Hayhoe, who runs the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University,
has devoted herself to persuading skeptics that climate change is
real—including people in her own community.

Hayhoe is featured in the Winter 2019 edition of Foreign Policy magazine
as one of 100 Global Thinkers. She is also the guest on our podcast this

*Abrupt Climate Mayhem Mash: 3 of 3*
Paul Beckwith
Published on Jan 27, 2019
Ongoing 2019 climate disruption is fast and furious. Abrupt climate
system change cares not about human affairs, structures, politics, our
livelihoods, and our precious but precarious civilizations. Disruption
accelerates at ever faster rates wreaking havoc on our lives, with huge
consequences. Media coverage on climate disruption, weather extremes,
etc. in the main-stream is better, but often inaccurate; while risks and
consequences are significantly downplayed.

*Watch: Destruction of the Environment as a Consequence of Overpopulation*
*SIXDEGREES* on 01/27/2019
The world will certainly not end, but it will very dramatically change
as will also be the case in regard to the entire humanity itself and its
existence. To what extent these dramatic-drastic changes become reality
depends on how and in which measure the world-population increases, and
therefore how much the worldwide overpopulation continues to increase in
the future, just as it also further depends on how much further the
impairment, destruction and elimination of nature, its fauna and flora,
the climate and the planet - called forth through the criminal
machinations of the overpopulation - will continue to be irresponsibly
advanced (FIGU Special Bulletin No. 93, Oct. 2015).
This video is based on an article written by Billy Meier and translated
from German into English by FIGU-Landesgruppe Australia. The article can

December 31, 2018, at midnight CET the population on our planet was
exactly 8,953,851,418 or almost 9 billion!

*Destruction of the Environment as the Consequence of Overpopulation*

Conclusion:
Not only does all the filth in the air change the climate, rather,
notably all of the consequences of the human being badly getting out of
the control of the good human nature, and destruction in regard to
nature, its fauna and flora as well as the climate. The entirety of all
current natural catastrophes is an urgent warning of the consequences of
climate change: If that is not very quickly steered away from, the Earth
will ultimately no longer be in the position of meeting even the most
necessary requirements of the humanity; consequently, the constantly
increasing demand for energy, food and water can no longer be met. If
nothing is done for the best, then the entirety of all machinations
which have very badly gotten out of the control of the good human
nature, called forth by the overpopulation, will lead to an inescapable,
wide-spread human tragedy. Therefore all nations of the world are called
upon to grasp the now only small chance to avoid this tragedy. But that
stipulates, first and foremost, that a controlled worldwide stoppage to
births is effected and a worldwide birth control is introduced so that
the overpopulation quickly becomes constrained and nature and its fauna
and flora as well as the climate can recover again from all the
destruction which has arisen due to the machinations, which have very
badly gotten out of the control of the good human nature, of the
overpopulation. The time has long ago passed, when lax, idiotic, useless
and unserviceable international climate-protection agreements can be
passed, because now intellect and rationality and a resolute, drastic,
clear, useful and valuable action are demanded, in order to finally
still indeed prevent the threatening Earth-human tragedy of the future.
