[long predicted]
*Climate change: Summers could become 'too hot for humans'*
By David Shukman - Science editor
16 July 2020
Millions of people around the world could be exposed to dangerous levels
of heat stress - a dangerous condition which can cause organs to shut down.
Many live in developing countries, and do jobs that expose them to
potentially life threatening conditions.
These include being out in the open on farms and building sites or
indoors in factories and hospitals.
Global warming will increase the chances of summer conditions that may
be "too hot for humans" to work in.
When we caught up with Dr Jimmy Lee, his goggles were steamed up and
there was sweat trickling off his neck.
An emergency medic, he's labouring in the stifling heat of tropical
Singapore to care for patients with Covid-19.
There's no air conditioning - a deliberate choice, to prevent the virus
being blown around - and he notices that he and his colleagues become
"more irritable, more short with each other"...
- -
As global temperatures rise, more intense humidity is likely as well
which means more people will be exposed to more days with that hazardous
combination of heat and moisture.

Prof Richard Betts of the UK Met Office has run computer models which
suggest that the number of days with a WBGT above 32C are set to
increase, depending on whether greenhouse gas emissions are cut...
- -
"This climate change will be a bigger monster and we really need a
coordinated effort across nations to prepare for what is to come.

"If not," he says, "there'll be a price to be paid."

*What Could Possibly Go Right? | Episode 9 with Carolyn Raffensperger*
Jul 16, 2020
postcarboninstitute

For today's "What Could Possibly Go Right?" Carolyn Raffensperger brings
her perspective as an environmental lawyer and Executive Director of the
Science and Environmental Health. She shares these ideas:

The impact of applying the "precautionary principle" towards preventing
suffering; this idea of taking positive action in the face of scientific
uncertainty and the likelihood of harm.

That there is an opportunity to rethink what government is for; working
to avoid preventable suffering by promoting the well-being of its people
instead of over-emphasizing economic growth.

That the long-time work of activists has provided a bank of solutions,
and that the focus now should be in cross-conversation and efforts
across sectors.

That the overarching frame of racism has shifted our picture of other
issues and systems, such as economics, capitalism, the environment and
public health.

*Earth Talk: Gaia's Lessons With Fritjof Capra and Stephan Harding**
*Jul 15, 2020
DartingtonTV
From a systemic and ecological perspective, the Covid-19 pandemic can
be seen as a biological response of Gaia, our living planet, to the
ecological and social emergency humanity as brought upon itself.

In this Earth Talk, Fritjof and Stephan will discuss the valuable,
life-saving lessons Gaia has offered us with this pandemic, and the
urgent need to also apply these lessons to the climate crisis.
About the speakers
Fritjof Capra, Ph.D., physicist and systems theorist, is a founding
director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, California, and a
Fellow of Schumacher College. Fritjof is the author of several
international bestsellers, including The Tao of Physics and The Web of
Life. He is co-author, with Pier Luigi Luisi, of the multidisciplinary
textbook, The Systems View of Life. Fritjof's online course is based on
his textbook.

In 1990 Stephan Harding was one of the founding members of Schumacher
College where he worked closely with James Lovelock, with whom he has
maintained a long-lasting friendship and scientific collaboration. They
were jointly appointmed as founding chair holders of the Arne Naess
Chair in Global Justice and the Environment at the University of Oslo.
At Schumacher College Stephan has taught alongside many of the world's
leading ecological thinkers and activists, including Arne Naess, Fritjof
Capra, Brian Goodwin, Vandana Shiva, David Abram, James Lovelock and
Lynn Margulis. He is now the Deep Ecology Fellow.

*Chesapeake Climate Action Network*
During these times of crises, things can feel overwhelming. The people
who work at the Chesapeake Climate Action Network often feel angry. We
feel scared. But here's what gets us through the day: each other.

When we work together, we know we can fight climate change, systemic
racism, and fossil fuels. Join the fight with us.

["Bush knew in '02"  Digging back into the internet news archive]
*On this day in the history of global warming - July 18, 2002 *
USA Today reports:

"Democratic attorneys general from 11 states accused the Bush
administration Wednesday of ignoring global warming and favoring energy
policies that will boost greenhouse gas emissions.

"White House spokesman Scott McClellan responded by saying the president
was working on a 'bipartisan, commonsense approach to address climate
change.'

"In their letter to Bush, the attorneys general denounced the
administration's climate change policy, arguing that states have been
left to address a global problem with a patchwork of inconsistent
regulations. They said Bush has failed to create a national plan to curb
carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles and power plants."
