Crazy Weather
California is on fire! Greenville County is being turned to ash by
uncontrolled wildfires!
The Dixie Fire, California’s largest wildfire, tore through the town of
Greenville on Wednesday, leveling much of the downtown area along with
several homes. The fire has grown to more than 400 square miles across
two counties.
The Dixie Fire has scorched 278,227 acres and was 35% contained on
Wednesday evening, Cal Fire officials said. The blaze had also swept
through Rich Bar, a Gold Rush-era ghost town.
Forty-five structures have been destroyed, 22 “minor structures” have
been destroyed, and the blaze is threatening another 12,438 structures,
Cal Fire officials said on Wednesday night.

*Greece: Residents flee as wildfires approach | DW News*
Aug 7, 2021 - DW News
Thousands of residents fled a wildfire north of Athens early Friday as
Greece's government warned of tough days ahead.
Firefighters continued their efforts to prevent the flames from reaching
populated areas, electricity installations and historic sites, as the
region faces its fourth day of inferno.
In heat wave conditions, fires tore through forest areas 20 kilometers
(12.5 miles) north of the capital, destroying dozens of homes. Fires are
also causing destruction in the Peloponnese, a peninsula located at the
southern tip of the mainland; and in Euboea, Greece's second-largest
island. These two regions, along with Athens, are suffering blazes of
"enormous strength and scale," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis
said.
Nearly 60 villages and settlements were evacuated Thursday and early
Friday across southern Greece, with temperatures set to increase in the
coming days.
In a suburb north of Athens, a 38-year-old man died after he was hit by
a falling transmission tower, according to the hospital that treated him.
Mitsotakis warned of strong westerly winds on Friday, meaning the
affected regions are going through an "unprecedented" situation "because
the past few days of heat and drought have turned the country into a
powder keg."

*Crunch time: this is America's last chance at serious climate policy
for a decade*
It's going to be a clean energy standard & clean energy tax credits, or
nothing.
David Roberts - - Aug 7
This is it, folks! The home stretch. It’s time to pay attention, call
your members of Congress, and mobilize your networks.
Congress is working on what is likely to be its last big shot at climate
change policy for a decade or more. If things go well, the legislation
will include a clean energy standard (CES) and clean energy tax credits,
which together would revolutionize the US electricity system. If things
don’t go well, there will be no substantial climate legislation for many
years to come...
- -
It’s going to be the CEPP and tax credits or nothing big for climate. If
both those policies are put in place, it could set the US power system
on a new course and strengthen American credibility at the upcoming
COP26 international climate meeting. If they slip through the cracks,
climate will have to settle for scraps and the US will surrender all
hope of meeting its climate targets or influencing others to do the same.
For the next few months, this is all matters. If you’ve ever considered
getting involved, now is the time.

[Activism -- make the call now]
*IF YOU WANT TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE, CALL 202-318-1885 TO TELL YOUR
SENATORS TO ACT NOW.*
What to say when you call:
Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME], I am one of the Senator’s constituents
living in [YOUR CITY/TOWN, STATE]. I wanted to ask the Senator to
support a big, bold climate bill, that invests at the scale of the
crisis, including the following 4 things:
*A Clean Electricity Standard that cuts pollution and modernizes our
grid.*
*Directing 40% of funding to frontline communities.*
*No more subsidies for fossil fuel corporations.*
*A Civilian Climate Corps that puts people to work.*
There are many more climate investments we need now. The bottom line is
the climate investments must be big to meet the climate crisis head on.

Last week, we saw massive news break for some of the world's biggest
fossil fuel companies. ExxonMobil was one of the companies that received
backlash for climate inaction and our guest this week, Dr. Naomi
Oreskes, has been following the company for a long time. Her recent
paper with Dr. Geoffrey Supran, “Rhetoric and frame analysis of
ExxonMobil’s climate change communications” looks at the company's
decades-long campaign to sow climate doubt. We discuss their findings
and last week's news.

*Oil and Gas Inundated Facebook With Election Season Ads After Biden
Released Climate Plan*
ExxonMobil and the American Petroleum Institute were top spenders in a
$9.6 million election-year fossil fuel marketing blitz targeting U.S.
Facebook users.
Oil and Gas Inundated Facebook With Election Season Ads After Biden
Released Climate Plan
Sharon Kelly - - Aug 5, 2021
- -
The vast majority of the oil and gas industry’s ads were paid for
between July and November 2020, InfluenceMap found, adding that there
appeared to be a sharp uptick immediately after Biden released his
sweeping climate plan last July...
ExxonMobil alone paid Facebook over $5 million — more than half the
total examined — to show the company’s ads over 139 million times in
2020. The second-highest spender studied was the American Petroleum
Institute, which paid Facebook $2.97 million, and OneAlaska — a
political group whose three top donors were BP Alaska, ConocoPhillips,
and ExxonMobil, ranked third, spending $330,00.
“Despite its own commitment to mitigate climate change, Facebook
continues to receive millions of dollars from the oil and gas industry
every year to post ads promoting the use of fossil fuels,” InfluenceMap
wrote. “It received $9,597,376 for the ads covered in this research.
- -
“Some of the most significant tactics found included tying the use of
oil and gas to maintaining a high quality of life, promoting fossil gas
as green, and publicizing the voluntary actions taken by the industry on
climate change,” the report concludes.
That’s all on top of ads that actively promoted outright climate denial
in 2020, which a previous InfluenceMap report found Facebook users saw
at least 8 million times during the first half of 2020.
“The research also shows the industry is using social media
strategically,” InfluenceMap concluded, “and deploying its ads at key
political moments.”
InfluenceMap’s findings drew a scathing response from Democratic Rep. Ro
Khanna, chairman of the Environment Subcommittee of the House Committee
on Oversight and Reform, CNN reports.
“For decades, fossil fuel companies have misled the public, to
regulators, and to Congress about the true danger posed by their
products,” Khanna said in a statement to CNN Business, noting that his
committee intends to ask fossil fuel CEOs to testify before the
Congressional subcommittee soon. “This report proves our knowledge that
the industry’s disinformation campaign is alive and well.”
