*Wildfire north of Big Sur prompts evacuations*
Bill Gabbert  January 22, 2022
The fire named “Colorado” has burned more than 1,000 acres near Highway
1 near the California coast

A wind-driven wildfire that broke out Friday afternoon north of Big Sur,
California has prompted evacuations. The fire just east of the Pacific
Coast Highway has forced residents to leave their homes and officials to
close a portion of the iconic highway.

The blaze started near Palo Colorado Canyon Road which led firefighters
who usually name a fire after a local landmark, to call it the “Colorado
Fire.” (A name which will likely result in confusion.)*...*

*Wildfire in Big Sur Forces Residents to Evacuate*
A late-season blaze that started on Friday grew to 1,500 acres in the
scenic region of California.
- -
The fire was “stubbornly active overnight,” according to the National
Weather Service, as intense, gusty winds of up to 50 miles per hour blew
the flames erratically along the area’s steep canyons. By Saturday
morning, the fire — known as the Colorado fire — grew to 1,500 acres
after starting a little after 5 p.m. on Friday in the Palo Colorado
Canyon area. Just one structure had burned by Saturday. The cause of the
fire, which on Saturday afternoon was 5 percent contained, is under
investigation...
- -
With mellower winds Saturday, Mr. Nuñez said he was hopeful that crews
would be able to get the fire under control. But the area is not
expecting rain until the end of February, so the conditions will remain
ripe for fire, he said.

*Over 450 Climate Scientists Say Advertising Industry Must End
‘Complicity’ in Climate Crisis*
For years, top advertising and PR firms have profited by helping the
fossil fuel industry spread misinformation, set up front groups, promote
false solutions, and obstruct climate action. Climate scientists are
demanding PR firms part ways with climate deniers

Exxon is facing a barrage of other lawsuits across the US. A number
accuse the company and other fossil fuel firms of breaching consumer
protection laws by propagating misinformation about climate science.

Oreskes said Exxon went further than most other oil companies in seeking
to hide the evidence of its own scientists collected about global
heating and in running a disinformation campaign.

“They’re pushing their freedom of speech as an issue because more than
any other company, it’s been proven by people like me and others that
they have a track record of promoting half truths, misrepresentations
and in some cases outright lies in the public sphere,” she said.

“This is so well documented that unless they can come up with some
strategy to defend it, they’re in potentially pretty serious trouble.”

*Climate change denial on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and TikTok is ‘as
bad as ever’*
Jessica Guynn
USA TODAY - - Jan 21, 2022
The climate is changing, but misinformation about it on the major social
media platforms is not.

Climate change falsehoods, hoaxes and conspiracy theories are still
prevalent on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube despite pledges to
crack down, a new report says.

Social media posts and videos denying climate change, disputing its
causes, or underplaying its effects not only can still be found on these
platforms, they are often missing warning labels or links to credible
information, according to Advance Democracy, a research organization
that studies misinformation.

Climate scientists say they’re frustrated by the lack of progress in
stemming the tide of climate change misinformation. For years, they’ve
urged social media companies to identify, flag and take down the
misinformation and the accounts that spread it...

Last May, Advance Democracy found hundreds of thousands of posts on
Twitter denying climate change. A week later, Twitter added a new
climate topic to direct users to credible information on climate change...

According to YouTube guidelines, when a viewer searches or watches
videos “prone to misinformation,” an informational panel should appear
with background information from independent third-party sources.
YouTube also prohibits ads that promote climate change misinformation.

*China’s Fake Snow Frenzy for Beijing Olympics Strains Water Supplies*
Beijing “underestimated the amount of water that would be needed for
snowmaking,” noted an IOC evaluation report published in 2015, and has
“overestimated the ability to recapture water used for snowmaking.”
Water isn’t the only environmental concern. Making snow at such a large
scale is an energy-intensive process that can at times spew tons of
planet-warming gases. This appears to be a low risk, however, since all
the snow canons used for the Games are powered by nearby wind farms,
according to Jia Maoting, the head of Aoti Construction Development
Ltd., which built some of venues.

/*Seawall damage a sign of things to come amid sea level rise and
climate change, experts warn*
By Simon Little & Kamil Karamali  Global News
January 9, 2022

The extensive storm damage to parts of Vancouver and West Vancouver’s
waterfront on Friday may be a sign of things to come amid climate change
and rising sea levels, experts warn.

Parts of the Stanley Park and Ambleside Park seawalls were left looking
like they’d been hit by an earthquake after strong winds helped produce
a storm surge at the same time as a seasonal king tide.
SFU earth sciences professor, John Clague, said the combination of those
two factors was exacerbated by sea level rise, and that similar damaging
storms are expected to increase in frequency in the years to come.

“It’s a double whammy because you’ve got sea level higher, but you’ve
also got the cyclic king tides stacked on top of that, which means that
the types of event we saw on Friday are going to become more common and
they’re going to be more damaging,” he said.

According to the U.S. Global Change Research Program, the global sea
level has already risen by between 16 and 21 centimetres since 1900 —
and the rate is increasing. About seven centimetres of that rise accrued
in the last 29 years.
- -
In West Vancouver, where much of Ambleside Park was underwater during
the storm, the Ferry Building Gallery escaped unscathed, after being
raised during ongoing restoration work specifically to protect it from
sea level rise.

Legacy sea-side infrastructure like Vancouver’s seawall, however, could
pose a bigger challenge in the years to come, and Clague said even with
major upgrades we may need to be expect them to be routinely damaged.

“I don’t think we can abandon them, but we need to look at how we can
better protect them,” he said.

“(They) may be a thing of the past — it’s a terrible thought, I hate to
say it.”
