*Climate change takes a toll on Seattleites' mental health*
Some residents are experiencing a new kind of distress in response to
flooding, air pollution and other ecological events linked to climate
change.
by Ashli Blow -- June 6, 2022
- -
“The wildfire smoke, the heat dome we had here last summer definitely
led people to start thinking … this is happening to us. Now we're seeing
the impact. And that awareness does cause distress, anxiety,” Bryant
said. The more people talk about this openly, the better chance that
will lead them to take some action, he added.

Through conversations about our emotions, people can then channel energy
into responding to the climate crisis, whether that means taking care of
their family’s personal needs or joining a community movement to
advocate for better policies, according to both Bryant and Wright. Such
activism can directly result in resources for stronger infrastructure,
trauma prevention and holistic health services.

It’s why Lopez and the Duwamish River Community Coalition take people
out on educational boat tours. Their conversations throughout the
Duwamish Valley have resulted in various action plans for flooding
mitigation and air pollution.

Lopez believes that people need to understand the historical context of
environmental injustice to relate to the advocacy needed to make
adjustments for a more climate resilient future.

“Share what you learn today with someone else,” she told the passengers.
“Part of the advocacy is to tell the story.”

*Kevin Anderson quotes: *

“Senior academics are the new climate skeptics in my view!”

“Natural gas - Methane is a transition fuel… to 4ºC”

“We all paint a picture that fits with our world view but as we
reassess that world view repeatedly, eventually it doesn’t sit with
    our world view.”

“It is disturbing and interesting in the law that we will protect
things that are causing incredible damage and we will prosecute
things that are trying to stop that incredible damage being caused.”

“Particularly academics, we are paid to be honest and direct about
our research and we will sweeten the pill, hugely sweeten the pill
in public and I think that is deeply arrogant, of often very decent
people, fast we think the public can’t deal with it”

“The policymakers are simply not up to the job.”

*Peter Dykstra: Gun and climate change delusions*
Millions here suffer from twin hallucinations: Guns don’t cause our mass
shootings, and the climate isn’t changing.
Peter Dykstra - Jun 05, 2022
We’re at the tail end of the traditionally self-imposed mourning period
for the massacres in Buffalo and Uvalde.

As I write this on Thursday, we’re waking to news of another slaughter
in Tulsa, but this time, only four died. Only?

Back in the 1990’s, we had a less jaded attitude to both the fearful
predictions of climate change and the horrific realities of mass
shootings in places like Killeen, Texas (1991, 24 dead) and San Ysidro,
California (1984, 22 dead). In 1994, Congress outlawed the sale of most
assault weapons for 10 years. In 1997, the U.S. signed the Kyoto
Protocol, an agreement among 150+ nations to take the first steps to
reduce carbon emissions.

But Congress didn’t renew the assault weapons ban in 2004. And the
Senate voted a non-binding 95-0 to reject Kyoto. The Senate’s approval
would have committed the U.S. to the treaty. President Clinton took the
Senate’s hint and never submitted Kyoto for formal approval.

We’ve never come as close to unified national action on either. Mass
shootings are seemingly everyday. And climate change has moved from a
scientifically projected disaster to a real one.

*Another tragic similarity*
News media attention to the climate crisis is increasing, according to
the University of Colorado’s Media and Climate Change Observatory. But
after our nightly dose of Ukraine, COVID, inflation, the 2020 election,
the midterms, the Kardashians du jour and more, TV gatekeepers just
can’t find the time in a 20-minute national newscast for climate.

Oddly enough, gun violence coverage works the same way. Once the stun
factor from the May shooters departs us, guns will have to shoot their
way back into media consciousness.
jjj
Climate news saw a conspicuous-but-fleeting jump in attention in 2006.
What caused it? Arguably, the back-to-back most destructive Atlantic
hurricane seasons in history primed the media politics pump. The 2004
season saw $4 billion storms tear across Florida. Then, 2005 reached
into the Greek alphabet for names after the rampant destruction of Katrina.

Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth, released in May 2006. It was a
rare box office hit for a documentary, then won an Oscar. Gore shared
the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations' top climate
scientists. So it seemed we were on the way to tackling climate change.

Sixteen years later, we’re still finding our way. Both NOAA and Colorado
State University, the primary hurricane forecast predictors, say this
Atlantic season could be a bad one.

For both climate-driven and gun-driven disasters—enough of the response.
It's time to prevent.

*Will the Supreme Court Hamstring Efforts to Protect the Environment?*
June 5, 2022
By Sambhav Sankar
Mr. Sankar is the senior vice president of programs at EarthJustice, an
environmental law group.

If you continue to harbor doubts that the Supreme Court’s conservatives
are advancing an ideological agenda, the next few weeks will probably
lay those to rest.

Before breaking for the summer at the end of this month, the court is
likely not only to strike down or severely curtail the constitutional
right to an abortion and expand gun rights but also undermine important
environmental protections.

From my perspective as an environmental lawyer and a former clerk for
Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, a case that looms large is West Virginia v.
E.P.A., which should be decided within weeks. The justices will
determine how much authority the Environmental Protection Agency has to
address the climate crisis by regulating emissions of climate-warming
carbon dioxide from power plants...
- -
Americans are increasingly concerned about the environment, and
two-thirds of us think our government should do more to protect it. Why
then do the Supreme Court’s conservatives seem to be going so far out of
their way to hamstring federal efforts to regulate polluters and slow
climate change?

The reason is that the court’s five most conservative justices were
seemingly selected primarily for their fidelity to an agenda that is far
outside the legal mainstream that even Charles Fried, President Ronald
Reagan’s conservative solicitor general, called it “reactionary.”
Moreover (and not coincidentally), they were confirmed by senators who
together were elected with fewer votes than senators who opposed their
confirmations. Three of them — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy
Coney Barrett — were nominated by a president who lost the popular vote.

This profound disconnect between the will of the people and the court’s
deregulatory agenda on the environment could not come at a more
dangerous time. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that
our window to avert irreversible climate harm is closing fast. If the
Supreme Court chooses this moment to pursue an agenda of limiting
federal regulatory power, it will serve the interests of corporations —
particularly fossil fuel companies — while pushing people and the planet
closer and closer to the point of no return.

*Revealed: the PR Firm Behind the UK’s Net Zero Backlash*
Blue Sky Strategy, run by anti-BBC campaigner Rebecca Ryan, was listed
on the website of a group whose founder calls climate change a “con”.
By Adam Barnetton - -May 26, 2022
A well-connected public relations specialist who runs an anti-BBC
pressure group and campaigned for a “hard” Brexit is working with
climate science denial groups to oppose the UK’s net zero target, DeSmog
can report.

The finding sheds new light on a network of PR agencies, right-wing
politicians and think-tanks working to drum up opposition to climate
policies as part of a broader drive to cut regulation and boost
production of fossil fuels.

Rebecca Ryan, managing director of Blue Sky Strategy, runs the “Defund
the BBC” campaign, which wants to see the licence fee scrapped and deep
cuts in the corporation’s budget. The campaign, launched in 2020, has
accused the public broadcaster of bias, including in its climate coverage...
- -
*Political Influence*
Ryan has links in parliament, having founded the pressure group
StandUp4Brexit in 2018, which was backed by 60 MPs including the now
Prime Minister Boris Johnson and four of his cabinet ministers – Priti
Patel, Nadine Dorries, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Suella Braverman.

The group was praised as “heroic” by former Brexit Minister Steve Baker,
a trustee of the GWPF who is currently leading the Net Zero Scrutiny
Group (NZSG) of MPs and peers opposing the UK’s net zero targets.

In March, the group’s chair, fellow Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay,
endorsed a Net Zero Watch report that called for the “rapid” extraction
of oil and gas, the return of fracking for shale gas, keeping coal-fired
power stations open, and for renewable energy from wind and solar power
to be “wound down completely”.

Ten StandUp4Brexit signatories are now involved in the NZSG, including
Baker and Mackinlay – both of whom provided quotes to support the
fracking survey for which Ryan was listed as the media contact.

Ryan was also managing editor of Global Vision UK, a pro-Brexit news
website launched in 2020 whose contributors included GWPF personnel.
GWPF head of policy Harry Wilkinson wrote an article for the website
that year opposing investment in wind farms and clean energy, calling it
“magical thinking” and part of a “decarbonisation obsession”.

*‘Discretion is Key’*
Blue Sky appears to specialise in the kind of social media campaigning
adopted by both Net Zero Watch and CAR26. A message on Blue Sky
Strategy’s website reads: “Times are changing. People now rely on
personal referral and online news sources significantly more than
traditional broadcast media or advertising.”

The website does not have a client list, but features videos and tweets
for Global Vision and Free Market Conservatives, another Ryan project,
as examples of its work, including a video for the latter with the now
Home Secretary Priti Patel.

“In politics, discretion is key,” reads another message on the site.

*Mapped: How the Net Zero Backlash is Tied to Climate Denial – and Brexit*
The ties between anti-green politicians, climate denial groups and the
backers of “hard” Brexit are extensive.
By Adam Barnett and Michaela Herrmannon Mar 18, 2022
- -
Farage and Tice have long opposed climate action. Under Farage, UKIP’s
2015 and 2017 general election manifestos pledged to rip up green
measures, repeal the UK’s Climate Change Act, withdraw from the Paris
Agreement, and support fracking.

In 2020, Farage said Reform UK would run candidates against “any and
every” politician who backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s 10-point
plan for a “Green Industrial Revolution”. The same year, Farage used his
show on LBC to claim that global population growth was a greater threat
than CO2 emissions.

Richard Tice appears to have joined forces with CAR26, the originator of
the net zero referendum idea, speaking on a panel organised by the group
on 10 February. He claimed politicians were trying to make money out of
what he called the “green agenda”. On 6 March, Tice tweeted that
“climate change happened for last million years & next million years.
Multiple periods of warming then cooling”.

CAR26 originally stated on its website that it was “powered by Blue
Sky”, a communications firm run by a group of former Brexit campaigners,
according to open Democracy.

/[The news archive - looking back]/
/*June 6, 2001*/
The AP reports:

"In a study commissioned by the White House, the National Academy of
Sciences said Wednesday that global warming 'is real and
particularly strong within the past 20 years' and said a leading
cause is emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels.

"The report was requested to help prepare Bush for his trip to
Europe next week, but the academy was not asked for policy
    recommendations and it made none.

"In Europe Bush has meetings on global warming scheduled with
various officials. Many Europeans protested vigorously after Bush,
citing looming energy shortages, in March reversed a campaign
promise to limit CO2 emissions from power plants.

"The 24-page National Academy of Sciences report, an assessment
based on previous studies about the phenomenon, says, 'The primary
source, fossil fuel burning, has released roughly twice as much
carbon dioxide as would be required to account for the observed
    increase' in temperature.

"The report also blames global warming on other greenhouse gases
directly affected by human activity: methane, ozone, nitrous oxide
    and chlorofluorocarbons."
