*Why is our upper atmosphere cooling?*
Just Have a Think
Jun 11, 2023
We've all heard about the warming of our atmosphere, but now we're being
told it is cooling as well! How come? Apparently it's all to do with how
the different layers of our atmosphere react to incoming sunlight and
outgoing infrared light. Research now shows that cooling in the upper
layers could be jeopardising satellite orbits and opening up a new ozone
hole above the arctic. So what's going on??

One part of the atmosphere has been cooling down for the past few
decades and it provides a smoking gun evidence for what is behind the
climate crisis. Let's talk about where that is, and why that is.

/[  Katharine Hayhoe honors the first climate psychologist  ]/
*Psychologist Renee Lertzman on dealing with climate anxiety and
encouraging climate action*
Wildfires have raged across Canada the last few weeks, covering huge
areas of eastern Canada and the U.S. in thick, apocalyptic orange haze.
Even if you aren’t breathing record levels of particulates in cities
like New York, Toronto, or Washington D.C., you might still be feeling
existential dread just from seeing images of the smoke-filled orange skies.

It’s fitting, then, that my first-ever guest-edited newsletter is this
week, and it’s psychologist Renee Lertzman. Renee’s work is all about
understanding the emotional impact of the global climate crisis, and how
to turn climate anxiety into action. She believes that her job is not to
motivate or “get people to care” about the problems facing the planet,
but to listen to them and guide them towards action.

That’s why she developed Project Inside Out, an online tool and resource
hub that brings together changemakers, activists, and clinical
psychologists to drive sustainable behavioral change on climate issues.
Renee says that the psychology of climate change is not only about how
we manage our mental health as we face this crisis, it’s also about how
we help others take action too.

Take it away, Renee!

*GOOD NEWS*

Sixteen young Montanans who range in age from 5 to 22 are suing the
state, claiming that its support of fossil fuels violates the state
constitution, which guarantees a right to a “clean and healthful
environment in Montana for present and all future generations.”
Despite efforts to derail the lawsuit, a judge recently ruled it can
go to trial, which will make it the first of its kind in the U.S.

“It’s so powerful to see younger people seeking action on climate
commensurate with the scale of what’s at stake,” Renee says. “This
is truly next-level human behavior. It requires what Buddhist
teaching calls “skillful means” — where we channel our commitment
and dedication from a place of love, compassion, and connection
instead of fear, blame, shame, accusation, or demonization.”

“We need to celebrate this,” she continues, “and together, dive
deeper into how more of us can step into compassionate leadership
roles, no matter who or where you are, or your political affiliation
or ideology. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment, and these young
people are embodying a new kind of leadership for us all.” I
    couldn’t agree more!...

*NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS*

Biologists have discovered more than 5,000 new species at a future
deep-sea mining site in the Pacific Ocean. The site — which is about
twice the size of India and stretches from Mexico to Hawaii — has
already been carved up into mining claims by companies hoping to
extract materials like manganese, cobalt, and nickel located some
4,000 to 6,000 meters below the surface.

These rare earth minerals are key to producing the batteries for the
current technology that enables the world to swap fossil fuel power
for emissions-free alternative energy; but they come at a cost that
have led some to call for a ban on deep sea mining, warning of
potentially disastrous effects on the ocean’s ecosystem.

“There is a profound shadow world to the renewable energy tech
markets and what we consider to be “solutions” in energy
transition,” Renee says. “Much life is at stake, and it is hard for
us to process this emotionally and cognitively, especially if we are
focused on short-term survival. This kind of news can send one into
a very dark hole of despair and hopelessness.” That’s exactly why
the next section is so important: what you can do:

- -
*WHAT YOU CAN DO*

Renee’s top recommendation is to start a conversation with someone
in your life about climate action. But here’s where it might be
different from what you’re expecting: don’t lecture them or dump
your worries on them. Instead, she says, focus mainly on asking
questions and listening. Notice your own triggers and reactivity as
you practice staying open and curious. Keep in mind the existential
magnitude of our situation and how we are all navigating complex
    challenges.

What we need now are honest, grounded and compassionate
conversations across diverse perspectives, so we can truly listen
and find common ground. The ability to have conversations and group
discussions that are productive and “safe” is the baseline for
    climate action.

*Opinion: How I talk to my kids about climate change*
Opinion by Laura Schifter
Sat June 10, 2023
- -
Over the past few days – and indeed over the past few years – I’ve
noticed two new emotions have crept in: dread and guilt...
- -
I feel dread knowing that the next few months will be marked by moments
of extreme weather — around the country and the world — that will likely
be unprecedented. This extreme weather, which will only get worse each
year, will surely become a normal part of how children experience summer.

Will it be another heat dome over the Pacific Northwest? Flooding in
Kentucky? Fires in California? Something in Europe or Pakistan? This
summer, will extreme weather hit closer to home? We won’t know for sure
what it will be or where, but we can predict that these extreme weather
events are becoming more common.

I got an email from my kids’ school this past week: “Weather Notice:
Code Red Air Quality.” All outdoor activities and play were canceled.

In April, the Environmental Protection Agency released a report
highlighting the health impacts of climate change on children and youth:
Increasing rates of asthma, worse allergies, lost learning and more risk
of displacement. Poor air quality, in particular, affects child brain
development and mental health.

My guilt sets in. This is the reality of our children’s lives, and we,
collectively as adult humans, are responsible. Our greenhouse gas
emissions — largely from burning fossil fuels for energy,
transportation, manufacturing, buildings and the clearing of land for
agriculture — are changing our atmosphere...

*the future climate warlords of northern california*
A far right militia butting into wildfire cleanup efforts is a dark sign
of things to come if we don’t fight the climate crisis.
by: Greg Fish on 08.04.2022
According to the group of tree-hugging, granola-munching hippies known
as the United States military, climate change poses the most significant
risk for worldwide conflicts in the near and far future, as fallout from
more powerful storms and stress on vulnerable infrastructure drives
failing states to the brink, emboldening terrorist groups, igniting
civil wars, and creating refugee crises. This inability to deal with
floods, droughts, famines, and pandemics, and the resulting conflicts,
are expected to be the leading cause of death for millions in the next
few decades.

But while the Pentagon is focused on failed and failing states where it
conducts most of its very expansive and secretive counter-terrorism
work, a recent incident in Northern California shows that even wealthy
nation states aren’t immune to the same threats. In Mariposa, a militia
known as Echo Company handed out pancakes, sandwiches, and recruitment
materials to evacuees of the Oak Fire, ostensibly to help the
overburdened local emergency services. Which would be a nice gesture if
you ignore this groups’ history and ideology.

You see, Echo Company is actually a splinter group of the California
State Militia, kicked out for “militant activity and incitement” at the
peak of the COVID pandemic. That means the seemingly nice gentlemen in
fatigues serving breakfast and offering you more information about their
little social club actually want to take up arms against the government
and hope that you’ll join them if you see that between bouts of planning
to bring about a fascist dystopia in a violent coup, they also make mean
pancakes and help out tired firefighters.

And partially because America is, well, having some serious structural
issues right now, Echo Company was able to get the local sheriff’s
department to softly backpedal their initial warming about their
activity, steamrolling their way into unearned legitimacy. Believe it or
not, this is the exact tactic used by ISIS and other radical Islamic
terror groups, straight from their field manual Management of Savagery.
Where local services are failing and social cohesion is frayed, swoop
in, offer help, insist on providing it no matter what, then start
recruiting after doling out favors.

Of course, this tactic isn’t exclusive to the Middle East. Mafias in
Italy and the IRA in Ireland had been employing the same strategy for
decades with various levels of success. As long as they get new members
and supporters out of their consent-optional do-gooding, they’re hoping
you won’t start doing your research and wondering why they’re so dead
set on trying to bring about neo-feudal societies complete with
warlords, and often a good touch of ethnic cleansing, and so many of
their solutions to social problems involve guns, bombs, and kidnappings.

Now, you may ask why left wing groups don’t do something similar to
counterbalance far right militias showing up to climate emergencies, but
that’s beside the point. Local services should have the staffing,
resources, and funding to feed evacuees, tackle the fires, and make
repairs quickly and efficiently. The whole fact that the government and
society at large is looking out for its citizens is the point, and
that’s what will effectively undermine the cult-like message groups such
as Echo Company are trying to spread: join us, we’re the only ones who care.

Consider that the Syrian civil war, which created waves of refugee
crises in Europe and ISIS, was most likely triggered by climate change
induced crop failures, and droughts in Africa have been driving wave
after wave of migrants trying to escape their failing, and increasingly
violent homes. Just imagine how much worse the situation will become if
we do nothing to address it in a global, coordinated manner. Thousands
of Echo Companies will be busy recruiting soldiers as War Boys to their
Immortan Joes in a Mad Max world in which they think they’ll thrive.

We have to take them seriously because as we saw time and time again,
they’re not just playing around. Giving them and their enablers more and
more opportunities to further destabilize social fabrics and reshape
them into something more totalitarian and hostile seems foolish at best,
and dangerous at worst. But if we refuse to take our social contracts
seriously and don’t clean up the damage caused by our pollution, that’s
exactly what we’ll be doing at a cost measured in trillions of dollars
and millions of lives.

/[ Two Economists talking --interesting but still refusing to realize we

*The Rhodes Center Podcast: Does economics do more harm than good?*
Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs

Jun 6, 2023  Rhodes Center Podcast
Does economics do more harm than good? And if it does, how would we know
harm when we see it?

In 1849, the historian and philosopher Thomas Carlyle referred to
economics as the “dismal science.” The pejorative stuck, and is still
slung by critics of the field today.

But what if economics is worse than “dismal”? What it’s…harmful?

George DeMartino’s recent book, “The Tragic Science: How Economists
Cause Harm (Even as They Aspire to Do Good)”, makes exactly that claim:
that economists aren’t just ineffective at solving social problems; they
often end up creating new ones. Worse still – since economics lacks a
meaningful criteria for defining what harm is, economists often don’t
know how to measure (and fix) the problems they create.

George is an economist himself, and his work isn’t just a pile-on
against the field. Rather, his critique points a way towards a more
socially engaged version of economics – one that takes the notion of
harm seriously.
