warming with an ice sheet that could push up global sea levels by

*Antarctica warming much faster than models predicted in ‘deeply
concerning’ sign for sea levels*
Study finds ‘direct evidence’ of polar amplification on continent as
scientists warn of implications of ice loss
Graham Readfearn
@readfearn
Thu 7 Sep 2023,
Antarctica is likely warming at almost twice the rate of the rest of the
world and faster than climate change models are predicting, with
potentially far-reaching implications for global sea level rise,
according to a scientific study...
- -
“If anthropogenic polar amplification is already occurring in the
Antarctic that exceeds that simulated by climate models, then future
warming will likely be greater than that currently projected by climate
models.”

A warming Antarctic, he said, would also likely lead to further losses
of sea ice that would have implications for “ocean warming, global ocean
circulation, and marine ecosystems”.

“As far as sea level rise, ocean warming is already melting protective
ice shelves in West Antarctica and causing the West Antarctic ice sheet
to retreat.”

Greater warming could also lead to more melting of coastal ice shelves
that protect glaciers.

“This has already been seen on the Antarctic peninsula in recent
decades, and it could become a more widespread occurrence around
Antarctica sooner than anticipated in a more strongly warming Antarctic
climate,” he said

*Sanity Check on Climate Change: A Conversation with Chris Field
(Episode #333)*
Sam Harris
Sep 6, 2023  Making Sense Podcast: Episodes
Sam Harris speaks with Chris Field about climate change and its
consequences. They discuss skepticism about climate change, the accuracy
of climate models, the magnitude of temperature increases, how global
temperatures are measured, the historical record of climate variation,
the range of possibilities in the coming decades, feedback mechanisms,
wildfires, water vapor, air pollution, solar geo-engineering, the
biggest challenge to taking action on climate change, the costs of
transitioning to a carbon-neutral economy, renewable sources of energy,
nuclear power, carbon capture, hydrogen, the developing world, China and
India, carbon taxes and other incentives, and other topics.

Chris Field is the Perry L. McCarty Director of the Stanford Woods
Institute for the Environment and Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for
Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies. His research focuses on climate
change, especially solutions that improve lives now, decrease the amount
of future warming, and support vibrant economies. Recent projects
emphasize decreasing risks from coastal flooding and wildfires. Field
was co-chair of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change from 2008-2015. His widely cited work has earned many
recognitions, including election to the US National Academy of Sciences,
the Roger Revelle Medal, and the Japan Prize.

*Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway Discuss 'The Big Myth'*
The Climate Pod
May 7, 2023
How did Americans come to believe that markets were the answer to
everything? Why don't people trust the government to efficiently
allocate resources in a way that creates the greatest good? Who
orchestrated this century-long con of the American people?

Dr. Naomi Oreskes and Dr. Erik Conway, co-authors of the eye-opening
book "Merchants of Doubt", join the show to discuss their new book "The
Big Myth: How American Business Taught Us to Loathe Government and Love
the Free Market." Our conversation only scratches the surface of
everything they uncovered while trying to get to the origin of the
market fundamentalism myth that has dominated American popular culture
for the last 100 years, and how that myth has led to the climate crisis
we're facing today.

*The Big Myth: The Civic Religion of Capitalism | Naomi Oreskes | TMR*
The Majority Report w/ Sam Seder
Jun 10, 2023  #EmmaVigeland #leftist #MajorityReport
Sam and Emma speak with Naomi Oreskes, professor of the History of
Science at Harvard University, author of The Big Myth: How American
Business Taught Us to Loathe Government and Love the Free Market,
co-authored with Erik Conway. Professor Naomi Oreskes then joins as she
dives right into her work with Erik Conway exploring why intelligent
people are so inclined to altogether reject hard-won, well-established
scientific evidence (from global warming to the impacts of child labor),
and the government regulations that would best address the issues that
are discovered, first taking on the influence of market fundamentalism
on denouncing any and all attempts at government regulation. Professor
Oreskes then walks Sam and Emma through the ideology of market
fundamentalism, exploring the ever-looming threat of communism and the
myth of the free market in creating a fundamental threat to liberty
juxtaposed with a utopian and organic economic system, making any
restraint on the market a step towards the return to serfdom, before
shifting to how market fundamentalism was able to capitalize on
pre-existing elements of US culture such as hyper-individualism and the
deification of property rights. Moving into the evolution of this
fundamentalist ideology in the West, Naomi Oreskes parses through the
debates around child labor regulation, energy provision, and labor
compensation to show how the ideology of market fundamentalism was
laundered from the elites through academia and the electoral system
during the first half of the 20th Century, alongside a mass investment
into cultural propaganda align public opinion with their aims. Wrapping
up, Sam, Emma, and Naomi explore the greater ideologies behind the
emergence of market fundamentalism, from the Mont Pelerin society to
Friedman and Hayek, and tackle why embracing truth to combat propaganda
is necessary to win the battle.
