Heavy rains led to a temporary lake forming in the normally bone-dry
park in California. Nature lovers have been taking advantage of the rare
event.
These are spooky beautiful - cover shot is the best... people look so
creepy.

/[ Hurricane season talk - video ]/
*Hurricanes, AMOC, and Wind Maps- Oh My!*
American Resiliency
Feb 21, 2024
This intensely nerdy video is here to answer your top recent questions
about hurricane outlooks and AMOC modeling.  We start with some info on
the near-term hurricane outlook.  If you want to get straight to the
AMOC paper- big thanks to DJ Jablonsky for finding this gem- jump about
4 minutes in.  This gives us a LOT more details about what is modeled to
happen in the first 10 years after AMOC turns off, both regionally in
the US and around the globe.
Paper available through the kindness of one of the authors, Taschetto,

/[ Investigative journalist - Atlas Network ]/
*Climate Corruption | Amy Westervelt*
Planet: Critical
Feb 21, 2024
Truth is stranger than fiction—but fiction is better written.

We know their playbooks and their networks, but the bad guys of this
story are in no rush to change their tactics. From funding dodgy
research to bleating lies on prime time television, the fossil fuel
industry and its allies are audaciously villainous. They’d been getting
away with it for decades—but now independent media has them running scared.

Amy Westervelt is an award-winning investigative climate journalist and
media founder with 20 years on the climate beat. Her investigations have
exposed the worst crimes of the fossil fuel industry, and she now leads
an international team of climate reporters at Drilled who uncover the
connections between governments, industry and policy.

She joins me today to discuss their recent exposé of The Atlas Network,
the shadowy ecosystem of think tanks pushing for the criminalisation of
climate activists all around the world. Amy explains the roots of the
network’s beginnings in World War Two, its rapid expansion as
neoliberalism sunk its teeth into global politics, and its vast grip
today on policy-makers around the world. This is a startling
conversation, revealing the terrifying reach of right-wing extremism and
corporate capture, with Amy suggesting the only path forward may indeed
be revolutionary.

/[  more info on Atlas Network from Wikipedia ]/
*Atlas Network*
Atlas Network, formerly known as Atlas Economic Research Foundation, is
a non-governmental 501(c)(3) organization based in the United States
that provides training, networking, and grants for libertarian,
free-market, and conservative groups around the world...
- -
Atlas Network has been described as "self-replicating, a think tank that
creates think tanks."The 2019 and 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index
Report ranked Atlas Network as 54th among the "Top Think Tanks in the
United States."The organization's website says it is not named after Ayn
Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged, but some published sources say it is. Atlas
Network has "hundreds of member think tanks across the world, and their
members produce white papers, meet with politicos, liaise with the
media, write legislation, and much more," as described by WNYC.

In 1981, Atlas Network helped economist Hernando de Soto found the
Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD) in Peru[11] and invested in
the Institut Economique de Paris (IEP) in France. In 1983, Fisher helped
launch the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) in Dallas,
Texas,[11] and the Jon Thorlaksson Institute in Iceland. That
organization was replaced by the Icelandic Research Centre for
Innovation and Economic Growth. Atlas Network grew from 15 think tanks
in nine countries in the mid-1980s to 457 think tanks in 96 countries as
of 2020. Atlas Network helped establish the Hong Kong Centre for
Economic Research in 1987 and the Liberty Institute in New Delhi in 1996.

Atlas Network has been linked to the tobacco industry. A 2017 paper in
the International Journal of Health Planning and Management said that
Atlas Network "channeled funding from tobacco corporations to think tank
actors to produce publications supportive of industry positions."[13]
The University of Bath's Tobacco Control Research Group said the Atlas
Network "appears to have played a particular role in helping the tobacco
industry oppose tobacco control measures in Latin America" during the
1990s. Le Monde identified 17 Atlas Network partners engaged in lobbying
and advocacy for "tobacco harm reduction," which supports vaping as a
substitute for smoking. The Guardian calculated that more than a fifth
of all groups affiliated with Atlas Network worldwide had either opposed
tobacco controls or taken tobacco donations.

Atlas Network has been linked to oil and gas producers. It collaborated
with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute of Canada in a push for oil and gas
development on Indigenous land, according to documents described in The
Guardian.[8] An article in The New Republic blamed Atlas Network for its
members' efforts in some countries to demonize and criminalize climate
protesting, particularly in Germany.

The Intercept, The Guardian, and The New Republic have described Atlas
Network as having ties to conservative movements, including the
administration of Donald Trump in the United States, Brexit in the
United Kingdom, and anti-government protests in Latin
America.[34][35][16] According to The Guardian, "Atlas took no position
on Brexit itself, and many of its European partners were opposed, but
directors of UK groups in the network were prominent in the official
campaign to take Britain out of the EU." In Brazil, Atlas Network had a
role in the "Free Brazil" movement in 2014 that led to the rise of Jair
Bolsonaro, and sponsors the Liberty Forum where policies of Luiz Inácio
Lula da Silva were opposed.

Atlas Network was linked to an online campaign that used fake accounts
against the Cuban government during the 2021 Cuban protests, according
to disinformation expert Julián Macías Tovar. Tovar, cited in The
Guardian, also said that Atlas Network members' Twitter accounts had
been involved in bot or troll centre campaigns during the 2019 Bolivian
political crisis, the 2021 Ecuadorian general election, and the 2021
Peruvian general election.[37]

*New climate data shows global temperatures continuing to rise sharply |
DW News*
Feb 20, 2024  #Climatechange #climatedata #globalwarming
For the first time the world was 1.5 degrees warmer compared to
pre-industrial times. It was actually anticipated that this important
threshold would only be reached in the next few years or the next
decade. Recently, scientists expressed "alarm" over the latest findings
that the so-called AMOC, a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic, is
about to shift due to rapid ice melt. If it were to fail, Europe would
see a dramatic drop in temperatures of up to 10 degrees on average. In
southern hemisphere countries, warming could intensify, and in the
Amazon region, the rainy and dry seasons could be reversed. Sea levels
would rise at a speed that would make it impossible for humans to adapt
in time. Have we already exceeded the key 1.5-degree limit agreed in the
Paris Climate Accord for good?

As a nonscientist, it's daunting for me to work thru the huge volume of
information on global climate change.
I've found that the most reliable scientific information comes from
respected peer reviewed science journals .
But journals have lots of big words, and lots of small print, and very
few illustrations to make it easy for me.  You can see why climate
denies don't like them.
But that's where the facts are.
How can you tell a good science journal?
