President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Scott Pruitt, the
Oklahoma attorney general and a close ally of the fossil fuel
industry, to run the Environmental Protection Agency, signaling Mr.
Trump’s determination to dismantle President Obama’s efforts to
counter climate change — and much of the E.P.A. itself....Mr. Trump
has criticized the established science of human-caused*global
warming*as a hoax, vowed to "cancel" the Paris accord committing
nearly every nation to taking action to fight*climate change*, and
    attacked Mr. Obama's signature*global warming**....*"*It*'*s a safe

Climate change threatens ability of insurers to manage risk ...

The Guardian -‎19 hours ago‎

Extreme weather is driving up uninsured losses and insurers must use
investments to fund global warming resilience, says study.....The
ClimateWise report, published on Wednesday, also says the industry
must also use its risk management expertise to convince policymakers
in both the public and private sector of the urgent need for climate
    action.

ClimateWise launches two reports that warn of growing protection gap
due to rising impact of climate risks
    <http://www.cisl.cam.ac.uk/business-action/sustainable-finance/climatewise/news/insurance-leaders-warn-protection-gap-due-to-impact-climate-risks>
    7 December 2016 – ClimateWise, a global network of 29 insurance
industry organisations which is convened by the University of
Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, has warned of the
urgent need to address the growing $100 billion annual climate risk
'protection gap' in two new reports; Investing for Resilience and
the ClimateWise Principles Independent Review 2016....
The two reports were launched today at a breakfast briefing with
over 100 delgates from across the insurance industry including
ClimateWise members. Since the 1950s, the frequency of
weather-related catastrophes, such as windstorms and floods, has
increased six-fold. As climate-related risks occur more often and
predictably, previously insurable assets are becoming uninsurable,
or those already underinsured further compromised....
The economic impact of these natural catastrophes is growing
quickly, with total losses increasing five-fold since the 1980s to
around $170bn today. Over the same period, the average annual
protection gap has widened quickly from $23bn to $100bn today,
according to analysis by ClimateWise member, Swiss Re.

Climate protection gap widening, warns insurance report
    <www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38229108>
"There potential for the insurance industry to support banks to
better understand the risk exposure that their mortgage portfolio is
facing from climate change, on the basis that if banks are more
aware of the risks the properties they are lending to might face,
such as the knock-on effect of a loss in property values.
"Insurance companies have a vested interest in banks making a more
strategic decisions because that would have a knock-on impact on the
decisions that developers, local governments and property owner will
make in terms of where they plan to locate new properties or protect
    existing ones."...
"Our argument is that the really powerful role the insurance sector
can play is to support external stakeholders to start investing in
    climate resilience... www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38229108
