Home Truths about the*Climate*Emergency
<http://www.commondreams.org/views/2016/12/08/home-truths-about-climate-emergency>
Common Dreams (press release) -11 hours ago
COP22 again highlighted the mismatch between illusive policymaking
and the stark reality of*global warming*. As always, it was left to
civil society groups to uphold a vision of global cooperation and
economic sharing as the only path towards a sustainable future.*..
*
As 2016 draws to a close, we appear to be living in a world that is
increasingly defined by its illusions, where the truth is a matter
of subjective interpretation or argumentative debate. Indeed,
following the United States election and Brexit referendum there is
much talk of a new era of post-truth politics, in which appeals to
emotion count more than verifiable facts. But there are some facts
that cannot be ignored for much longer, however hard we may try. And
the greatest of all these facts is *the escalating climate emergency
that neither mainstream politicians, nor the public at large, are
anywhere near to confronting on the urgent scale needed...there
cannot be hope for limiting global warming unless the principles of
sharing, justice and equity are operationalised in a multilateral
climate regime. *....

How Trump Can Influence*Climate Change*
<http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/12/08/us/trump-climate-change.html>
New York Times -5 hours ago
In choosing Scott Pruitt, a close ally of the fossil fuel industry,
to run the Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Trump has signaled a
desire to dismantle President Obama's actions to counter*climate

The Billionaire Energy Investor Who Vetted Trump's EPA Pick Has Long
List of EPA Violations
<https://www.desmogblog.com/2016/12/08/carl-icahn-donald-trump-scott-pruitt-epa-keystone-xl>
DeSmogBlog Steve Horn - Asked for his take on President-elect
Donald Trump's appointment of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt
to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
multi-billionaire investor and Trump business partner Carl Icahn
told Bloomberg that Pruitt is “going to really be a breath of fresh
air.” Given Icahn's business ties, that statement is steeped in
accidental irony...
Icahn, owner of the holding company Icahn Enterprises and a major
donor to Trump's presidential campaign, was instrumental in choosing
Pruitt — a man who as state prosecutor actively opposed most federal
environmental regulations and denied the science of climate change —
for the nation's top environmental job. As reported by The Wall
Street Journal, Trump allowed Icahn, the 26th most wealthy man on
the planet, to vet and interview finalists for high-level EPA jobs
even though Icahn owns business assets impacted by current EPA
regulations...
In addition, a DeSmog investigation shows that Icahn Enterprises
owns oil industry assets based in Oklahoma, which are involved in
EPA enforcement violations, and does business with TransCanada's
Keystone pipeline
system...https://www.desmogblog.com/2016/12/08/carl-icahn-donald-trump-scott-pruitt-epa-keystone-xl

Speaking Donald Trump's Language On*Climate Change*
<http://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2016/12/08/al-gore-donald-ivanka-trump-frederick-hewett>
WBUR -5 hours ago
Former Vice President Al Gore walks to microphones to speak to
members of the media after meeting with Ivanka Trump and
President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Tower, Monday, Dec. 5, 2016,
in New York..Speaking on PBS, Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post
reported that Ivanka instigated the meeting, and that Gore was
impressed with "the way she was thinking about the issue, framing
the issue."..Reputedly an astute businessperson, Ivanka is likely
seeing some economic implications of climate change that her father
does not. She and Gore could make the argument to her father that
nurturing the transition to a green-energy economy creates jobs and
helps American companies compete abroad. Federal spending on
sustainable infrastructure — things like mass transit, smart grids,
high-speed rail, fiber optic networks — could serve as a starting
point for a useful conversation between Trump and climate hawks.

*Why Scientists Are Scared of Trump: A Pocket Guide
<http://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/why-scientists-are-scared-of-trump-a-pocket-guide>*
"Much has been written lately about what Trump's victory reveals
about the electorate's relationship with the truth. (In short,
nothing good.) But to say that we are living in a "post-fact" era is
perhaps too benign. The problem is not just that too many people do
not seem to care about the truth (though this is certainly a huge
problem); it's that a lot of people—an increasing number of them in
high government positions—insist that their ravings are true, and
try to act on them. This naturally brings them into conflict with
those whose job it is to distinguish fact from fiction; hence the
subpoenas and attempts to intimidate...
For climate scientists, the dangers of hewing to reality have been
apparent for years. This is why the Climate Science Legal Defense
Fund was founded in the first place, in 2011. As Marshall Shepherd,
the director of the University of Georgia's atmospheric-sciences
program, tweeted recently, "Lots of concern about Fake News. As a
scientist that works in meteorology & climatology, welcome to our
world, dealt with this for awhile." But this doesn't make the
situation any easier to deal with. The pocket guide's advice for
scientists who think that they are being harassed? "When in doubt,
call a lawyer."

*What You Should Know About Trump's Cabinet & Climate
<http://www.climatecentral.org/news/trump-cabinet-climate-change-20920>*
All indications so far point to a bleak future for addressing
climate change, or even recognizing it as one of the world's largest
challenges. A number of his cabinet nominees, political appointees
and closest advisors are outright climate deniers while others have
funded the denial of climate change or are lukewarm on accepting the
science.
