    Hillary Clinton's Ambitious*Climate Change*Plan Avoids Carbon Tax

WASHINGTON - Hillary Clinton, courting young voters and the broader
Democratic base, has promised to one-up President Obama on*climate
change*, vowing to produce a third of the nation's electricity from
renewable sources by 2027, three years faster*...Conservative campaign
operatives agree that they would immediately pounce on any mention by
Mrs. Clinton of a carbon price...“Hillary Clinton surely knows the
political peril of directly telling American families that she wants to
tax their gasoline,” said Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for
Prosperity, the conservative group backed by the billionaires Charles G.
and David H. Koch...Since the political fallout from 2010, Mr. Obama has
sought to circumvent Congress on climate change. He used his executive
authority to release Clean Air Act regulations on vehicles and power
plants, the nation’s two largest sources of carbon pollution.*

Dozens of countries still haven't ratified the Paris*climate*deal.
    What's the holdup?

In the wake of the UK's vote to leave the European Union,
environmentalists have been in a bit of a tizzy. The Paris*climate*deal,
negotiated late last year, needs ratification from 55 parties accounting
for at least 55 percent of global emissions*...*

*Pic of the week: The largest wildfire in the country ignites the
California landscape
<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-theory/wp/2016/01/06/america-has-been-lied-to-about-climate-change/>*
There are two primary types of wildfires that scorch the West each year:
summer fires and Santa Ana fires. ...Right now, it is the season of
summer fires.
The Erskine Fire, located near Lake Isabella in California, has become
one of the most intense fires so far this summer. Destroying hundreds of
structures and burning over 60,000 acres as of Friday morning, this
destructive fire is just one of many “summer fires” setting the
California landscape ablaze this month.

*(Video) Global Food Assistance Outlook Brief
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKAzdoPCNqY>*
FEWS NET USAID (June 2016)
...forward-looking analysis of projected emergency food assistance
needs in FEWS NET coverage countries. The projected size of each
country’s acutely food insecure population is compared to last year and
the recent five-year average... Countries where external emergency food
assistance needs are anticipated are identified... Projected lean season
months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension
to the typical lean season. Additional information is provided for
countries with large food insecure populations, an expectation of high
severity, or where other key issues warrant additional discussion.

Eight Animals That*Climate Change*Is Pushing to the Brink

Here are eight other threatened or endangered animals that climate
change may drive extinct faster than thought. Global warming is not the
only challenge these species face, but it might be what pushes them over
the edge of existence—unless nations slow climate change and find
conservation solutions...Red-Ruffed Lemur, White-Bellied Cinclodes,
Waved Albatross, Spoon-Billed Sandpiper, Orange-Bellied Parrot,
Hawksbill Turtle, Ivory Gull and Atlantic Cod.

*World ‘beyond return’ of historic carbon dioxide milestone

Climate Home climatechangenews.com
Record surge in CO2 through 2015 and 2016 saw atmospheric concentrations
rise fast than 2 parts per million average to well above 400ppm...The
past 12 months have seen a record surge in carbon dioxide emissions say
scientists, driven by the burning of fossil fuels and boosted by a
rampant El Nino phenomenon....Tropical forests and plants that once
would have been expected to reduce global CO2 levels by September have
suffered badly under this El Nino, reducing their ability to soak up
carbon...That means the iconic milestone of 400 parts of carbon dioxide
in every million molecules of air has likely been passed for good, says
a study published in the journal Nature Climate Change
<http://www.nature.com/nclimate/index.html> "Paris Agreement climate
proposals need a boost to keep warming well below 2 °C".
