*Hillary Clinton could run on strongest climate change platform ever
<https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jul/11/hillary-clinton-clinton-climate-change-democratic-platform>*
The Democrats’ draft platform won’t be ratified until the convention,
but climate activists are already hailing it as a ‘monumental
victory’...The Clinton camp said, after the platform was adopted, that
she does not support a carbon tax and the draft still needs to be
ratified at the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia this
month....But the draft platform reflects the influence of Bernie Sanders
and other liberals on the 2016 race, and the recognition by Clinton of
the need to win over those supporters in swing states such as Colorado,
Florida and Virginia where there is strong concern about climate
change....The draft platform calls for putting a price on carbon, making
approval of pipelines contingent on a climate test, stronger regulation
of fracking – especially concerning water – and giving priority to
renewable energy over natural gas power plants.

*Climate change: the missing issue of the 2016 campaign
<https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jul/05/climate-change-voters-2016-election-issues>*
Guardian US survey reveals anger of voters as election year debate fails
to deal with concerns over the gathering global disaster...the race so
far was met by a barrage of criticism on the tone and substance of the
world’s most important election – with the two main parties, individual
candidates and the media all coming under heavy fire... the largest
group of participants pointed to climate change...."one issue .. wish

*Senators Launch Resolution, Speech Blitz Calling Out #WebOfDenial
Blocking Climate Action
<http://www.desmogblog.com/2016/07/11/senators-launch-resolution-and-speech-blitz-calling-out-climate-webofdenial>*
Washington, DC – Today,...and throughout the week,* 19 Senators will
take to the Senate floor to call out Koch brothers- and fossil fuel
industry-funded groups that have fashioned a web of denial to block
action on climate change. ...Despite polling that shows over 80 percent
of Americans favor action to reduce carbon pollution, Congress has
failed to pass comprehensive climate legislation. The Senators will
each deliver remarks detailing how interconnected groups – funded by the
Koch brothers, major fossil fuel companies like ExxonMobil and Peabody
Coal, identity-scrubbing groups like Donors Trust and Donors Capital,
and their allies – developed and executed a massive campaign to deceive
the public about climate change to halt climate action and protect their
bottom lines....As part of their effort to draw attention to the web of
denial, Senators Whitehouse, Markey, Schatz, Boxer, Merkley, Warren,
Sanders, and Franken are introducing a resolution describing and
condemning the efforts of corporations and groups to mislead the public
about the harmful effects of tobacco, lead, and climate. The resolution
also urges fossil fuel corporations and their allies to cooperate with
investigations into their climate-related activities. Congressman Ted
Lieu (D-CA) is introducing the resolution in the House this week.

****Paris climate deal needs fossil fuel giants to ‘implode*’
<http://www.climatechangenews.com/2016/07/04/paris-climate-deal-needs-fossil-fuel-giants-to-implode/>
Research shows that a “controlled implosion” of the fossil fuel industry
and a technological explosion of renewable energy are needed to meet
climate targets...National promises made late last year to contain
carbon dioxide emissions will not be nearly enough to meet the global
warming target1 agreed last December by 195 nations, according to a new
assessment....The signatories to the historic agreement at the UN
conference on climate change in Paris pledged to limit global warming to
below 2C and to aim for no more than 1.5C rise above pre-industrial
levels....The planet has already warmed by 1C in the last century.1 But,
climate scientists say, the intended nationally determined contributions
(INDCs) submitted before the meeting imply global warming of between
2.6C and 3.1C. So more needs to be done, they report in Nature journal.

This can occur through physical impacts, like the recent*El Nino*-fueled
drought in southern Africa or rising sea levels, technological
advancements, such as the hydrogen car, or regulatory changes, as
countries implement low-carbon policies.
