*15 Questions for Clinton and Trump. You Choose.

In a campaign season in which public insults, tweets and political
gaffes grab the biggest headlines, many of the issues and challenges
the next president will face are being pushed aside. Here are 15
questions for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump that the editorial
board of The Times and readers have said they'd like answered.
    Please select the three
    <http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/09/20/opinion/questions-for-clinton-and-trump-you-choose.html>that
are most important to you. The board will pose the most popular
    questions to both candidates.

(audio) This is What*Climate Change*Sounds Like, in D Minor

Despite spending countless hours of her PhD at Stanford making
visits to remote stretches of Alaska, poring over yellow cedar
measurements and photos and ultimately publishing her findings,
Lauren Oakes was about to experience her data in a new way.....Oakes
had just heard the sound of climate change in Alaska's yellow cedar
    forest
    <https://soundcloud.com/climate-central/yellow-cedar-of-the-alexander-archipelago>s
and the ways it's already altered the landscape. It wasn't just a
composer's impression of her research, though. She had just heard
her data — data meticulously collected and pored over for years
—translated from numbers and charts into music
    <https://soundcloud.com/climate-central/forest-changes-of-the-alexander-archipelago>.
"To hear the patterns it took me years to understand was
incredible," she said...The piece has the potential to change how
researchers and the public engage with data. Music based on data has
the potential to reveal new patterns to scientists and get data out
of the arcane language of empirical orthogonal functions, p-values
and Kruskal-Wallis tests and into a language that everyone can
understand....The research Oakes had just heard came courtesy of Nik
Sawe, a fellow Stanford PhD student at the time the music was
created and a current researcher there. He had emailed a group of
fellow students at the university hoping to find some data to turn
into music after going to a talk about using a technique called data
sonification to make music from seizure
    data..https://soundcloud.com/climate-central/yellow-cedar-of-the-alexander-archipelago

SEC Probe Called Possible 'Moment of Reckoning' for
    Exxon's*Climate*Crimes

Reporters Bradley Olson and Aruna Viswanatha said the investigation
"represents an escalation of the legal questions Exxon faces over
its past and future response to*climate change*." Further, they
observe that the probe "may also signal the opening of*...*

Hillary Clinton 'dropped*climate change*from speeches after Bernie
    Sanders endorsement'
    <https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/sep/20/hillary-clinton-dropped-climate-change-from-speeches-after-bernie-sanders-endorsement>

The Guardian -‎6 hours ago‎

Transcripts show the Democratic presidential nominee referred to
climate change directly in less than half as many speeches after her
left-wing rival conceded defeat....Hillary Clinton has dropped the
words "*climate change*" from most of her public addresses since
winning the endorsement of her party rival Bernie Sanders, according
to*Climate*Home analysis.... The rhetorical shift undermines hopes
that climate change might emerge as a key campaign issue in 2016.
Boosted by the disparity between Clinton and her Republican opponent
    Donald Trump, a self-professed non-believer in climate
change....Indeed, the signs were there. During the last six months
of Clinton's primary campaign against Sanders, the transcript log of
her speeches shows she was talking about climate change at one out
of every two speeches she gave....But since Sanders endorsed Clinton
on July 12, the full focus of the Clinton campaign has swung to
Trump. In 38 speeches since that date, Clinton mentioned climate
change specifically eight times. Just once every five public addresses.

*SEC Probe Called Possible 'Moment of Reckoning' for Exxon's Climate
Crimes
<http://www.commondreams.org/news/2016/09/20/sec-probe-called-possible-moment-reckoning-exxons-climate-crimes>*

Wall Street Journal reporters observe the move may 'signal the
opening of a new front of climate-related regulation and enforcement
at the SEC, a direction with far-reaching consequences for the oil
and gas industry.'..In what is being hailed as "a remarkably
important development," the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
has reportedly launched an investigation into whether Exxon Mobil
deliberately deceived investors over the long-term value of its
fossil fuel assets in light of the climate crisis....The federal
probe comes amid an ongoing public battle between the environmental
groups and attorneys general spearheading the state-level
investigations and Republican lawmakers on the U.S. House Committee
on Space, Science and Technology, who have attempted to stymie the
probes by issuing subpoenas to those involved.

Energy Secretary Urges Congress To Pass Sweeping*Climate*Policy

NEW YORK ― United States Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz on Monday
slammed Congress for failing to pass the kind of
sweeping*climate*legislation needed to transform an economy heavily

*Environmental destruction is a crime against humanity, ICC says
<http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2016/0917/Environmental-destruction-is-a-crime-against-humanity-ICC-says>*

The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced this week that it
would start considering cases involving environmental destruction,
misuse of land, and land grabs as crimes against humanity....The
move reflects a broadening perspective on what constitutes a war
crime, as seen in recent prosecutions for cultural devastation and
coral reef destruction...."The systemic crimes committed under the
guise of 'development' are no less damaging to victims than many
wartime atrocities," said Richard Rogers, a partner at Global
Diligence, in a statement. "The ICC Prosecutor has sent a clear
message that such offences may amount to crimes against humanity and
    can no longer be tolerated."

(audio) What's Up With All The Dead Trees?
<http://ijpr.org/post/what-s-all-dead-trees#stream/0>

Gaze across the mountains of the Northwest these days and you may
notice an unusual number of dead firs, pines and other conifer trees
scattered among the green ones. Drought is usually considered the
prime culprit. But recent research suggests the damage that has
historically been done to conifer forests by routine dry spells is
being compounded by climate change... What foresters call "drought
related conifer mortality" is reaching record levels throughout much
of the Pacific Northwest. A 2009 study by researchers from the
University of Washington, Oregon State University and federal
agencies found the rate of tree death in the region had doubled over
the preceding 17 years. Max Bennett -- an Oregon State University
Extension agent in the Rogue Valley -- says he's seen the situation
getting worse. ....Meaning the forest landscapes our grandchildren
grow up with could look very different from the one's we've enjoyed
    for generations.

*Global warming, rising seas and coastal cities: Trends, impacts and
adaptation strategies
<http://journalistsresource.org/studies/environment/climate-change/impact-global-warming-rising-seas-coastal-cities>*

Flooding and climate change, This updated collection of research
looks at how coastal areas are affected by global warming, with a
focus on rising sea levels, flooding and weather changes.......While
climate change remains a politically charged issue in the U.S.
despite the overwhelming evidence, efforts are underway to better
understand the risks, prepare for the future and increase community
resiliency. The Department of Defense, per its "Climate Change
Adaptation Roadmap" of October 2014, has sought to adapt its
facilities to a projected sea-level rise of 1.5 feet as early as
2034, though congressional Republicans have blocked efforts to fund
the research.... A 2014 study in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences found that large-scale urban adaptation
strategies have the potential to counteract some of the effects of
long-term global climate change.... ...Below is a series of studies
examining climate-change related risks and the regions and
demographic groups most threatened by them; efficacy of attempts
thus far to mitigate these risks; and adaptive solutions for coastal
regions. Many recent studies focus on particular communities facing
    inundation around the world.
