*Global warming* will melt an area bigger than AUSTRALIA

Daily Mail -10 hours ago
With global temperatures continuing to rise, experts have warned that a
chunk of frozen soil bigger than Australia could melt. Permafrost - soil
that has been frozen for at least two years - is more sensitive and

*Model projections and observations comparison page
<http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=20320>* Comments page
(RealClimate has)... set up a permanent page to host all of the
model projection-observation comparisons that we have monitored over
the years. This includes comparisons to early predictions for global
mean surface temperature from the 1980's as well as more complete
projections from the CMIP3 and CMIP5. The aim is to maintain this
annually, or more often if new datasets or versions become relevant.

*Climate model projections compared to observations
<http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/climate-model-projections-compared-to-observations/>*
Since we have been periodically posting updates (e.g. 2009, 2010,
2011, 2012, 2015, 2016) of model output comparisons to observations
across a range of variables, we have now set up this page as a
permanent placeholder for the most up-to-date comparisons. We
include surface temperature projections from 1981, 1988, CMIP3,
CMIP5, and satellite products (MSU) from CMIP5, and we will update
this on an annual basis, or as new observational products become
available. For each comparison, we note the last update date.

A gap of at least $40bn in financing commitments is hampering efforts to
combat*climate change*, signatories to the Paris agreement have warned,
as they try to keep the agreement going in the face of doubts over US
support under President Donald Trump.

(+video) Climate change scientists' bid to drill Everest glacier -
BBC News <http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-39442450>
BBC News -Apr 10, 2017
Climate-change scientists are to travel to the Himalayas in a bid to
become the first team to successfully drill through the world's
highest glacier.... group will use a drill adapted from a car wash
to cut into the Khumbu glacier in the foothills of Everest.
They will work at an altitude of 5,000m (16,400ft), in the hope of
finding out how climate change affects Khumbu.
Project leader Prof Bryn Hubbard said there will be "particular
challenges".
The 10-mile (17km) long glacier, in north eastern Nepal, flows from
as high as 7,600m (25,000ft) down to 4,900m (16,000ft) and is often
used by climbers on their way to Everest base-camp.
'Contend with thin air'
Once the drilling is done, the team will be able to study the
internal structure of the glacier - measure its temperature, how it
flows and how water drains through it.
But it will be no walk in the park.
"Working in the field is challenging at best, but this mission
presents some particular challenges," said Prof Hubbard, a winner of
the prestigious Polar Medal for his previous work.
